The fact that there are so many names in the depth chart is mostly related to the insane number of games french players have to go through. Toulouse, La Rochelle and Bordeaux have to play between 30 and 35 games per seasons accounting for top 14 and european cup, add to that 11 games for the French national squad (of course there are a few club game without international players during the 6 nations). It’s also the main reason why i see the french squad underperforming vs its individual talent (arguably top 3 world talent in a handful of positions: 1,2,4,5,6,8,9,10,11,14,15); tired bodies/ injuries and lack of long time periods for national squad training. On the upside, top 14 also provides incredible talent as it is now so competitive, and we have been blessed with a lot of u18/u20 talent in the last 5 years. The second factor for the depth is that it is a post world cup hangover year and galthié has to lay the foundations for the next one and try new things
Great job as usual ! And with the subtitles now to make things even clearer for me...AND... last but not least, great job too for the french names pronounciation !!👍👍
Aftet this very good old fashion analysis I hope that NZ now understands that a French "B side" will be very competitive and difficult to play against this summer (well, winter for you). Don't overlook them.
Cheers mate! Given that France have rotated their mid-year squad for as long as I can remember, I was amazed NZRU expected anything different! Hopefully still a good series next year!
@Twocentsrugby It will be a very nice confrontation as always between us two, no doubt about it. There is a special thing in those NZ-France games. Maybe because we both play the most fluid and unpredictable rugby?
Tbh that depends on who is the Top 14 final - as Toulouse and Bordeaux supply 35-40% of the team - if either is out at the semi stage suddenly you have 5-6 potential starters available. The French B in the last 2 years split a series v Argentina and should have beat the Wallabies. There isn’t any disrespect towards NZ it’s just you have to remember who PAYS the players and thats the clubs and the Top 14 is the PRIZE (even above the Champions Cup)
Tremendous work & great insights! Even though I watched every game of men’s France XV this year, I didn’t realize how many players wore that jersey. I wish for our youngsters to also get time in the 6N now! And thanks for the subtitles it helps a lot, had no issues showing the video to the old man here 👍
Too many changes? No I don't think so. It's the perfect time to experiment and try new combinations. I'm pretty sure every coach would love to have that much choice available. IMO Galthie Is doing the right thing as he is not focusing on world ranking but on building for the future. All these youngsters bloodied are a good thing and it will build a strong side over time. The 15 players difference with Scotland is quite impressive tho. It's almost a complete team difference with the next team using more players and they still rank 4th with not too many losses overall. I can see how Galthie is building to try to avoid depending on Dupont too much which was their mistake imo in the world cup.
Spoiled for choice, eh? Ntamack is now back from injury so they'll get even better. I think if ol' Jelly-Bear hadn't thrown his toys out of the pram he would've got more game-time. Crazy to think someone as talented as Serin is 4th choice at scrum-half. Excellent analysis as always, Mark.
hi man, I've been following your channel for a long time and it's by far the best rugby content, thanks for the subtitles for my compatriots who don't speak rosbeef ;) because of you I no longer watch any French content on rugby, keep it up!
I have the opposite problem as an English speaker who speaks reasonable French, but struggles to understand native speakers sometimes (Charles from Up Rugby for example). Now I can watch Mark's videos on French teams with French subtitles, for simultaneous rugby + French education 😄!
So, yes, the "summer team" is always experimental because Glathié gives most players time to recover from the season, so change was expected on that front for sure. However, this is a year where we had a lot of unavailabilites. Antonio for instance, was initally planned only as a substitute for 6N and should not have played Autum nations. But viruses and injuries decided otherwise. The 10 position is another story entirely where, while being a great player, Jalibert did not seem to fit the expectations of managment in terms of complementarity within the team and they prefered to have a 15 playing there. And finally, some of the team had to change because this was the end of a RWC cycle and not everyone went trough it unharmed. I think we should see a way more stable 2025, summer aside =)
France has depth, but the "players used" stat is obvious as France is always making large players reviews for the June tests because of Top 14 finals... Yes it will be "B" players in NZ tour 2025, but it could be stacked with ex-U20 world champs (Gailleton, Athissogbe, Auradou, Nouchi, Tuilagi, Jauneau, Massa...) surrounded by Le Garrec, Fickou, Couilloud, Grandidier, Willemse, Vincent, Macalou, Woki, Bamba or Barlot regarding actual Top 14 rankings.
Thanks for this! I really appreciate the subtitles. Would it be okay to have the same but for English for future videos? My dad is hard of hearing and we love watching your videos! Merry Christmas!
Honestly as Franco-English native speaker I m so impressed by your pronunciation of the players used . The team for ‘25 Will be : 1 Baille 2: Mauvaka 3 Tatafu 4-5 Flament Meafu 6-7-8 Cros Roumat Aldridge 9 Dupont 10 N tamack 11 Biele 12-13 Moefana -Fickou 14 Pennaud (Villiere 15 Ramos or Barré if Ramos is needed at 10. Atm there is in my mind a clear top 2 South Africa and France (due to depth) followed by in no order Scotland,NZ and Ireland. With Australia and England trying to catch up
Appreciate the kind words mate - I try to get them right - and people are helpful with feedback on the pronunciation too. Tatafu seems to be coming along well from what we've seen of him so far
Not sure about the Boudehent you mentioned in the midfield is the same as in the forwards. Paul, the forward, plays for La Rochelle and his brother, Pierre, who's a midfielder, for Stade Francais.
Yeah I probably could have taken it out as an "anomaly" but I think Paul spent a short time in the midfield during that game against Italy where Danty got red carded
@@TwoCentsRugbyPaul could have. There's quite a few players in France who play in the forwards and backs. Bastereaud played 8 towards the end of his career..
France is so lucky to have so many players capable of being in the squad. Ireland's low pack weight and low squad rotation shows in way they look a bit tired somtimes.
Thx for the french subtitles although i don't use them because you have a very good pronunciation in English and in French too to be honest ( player's name).
Dupont playing 10 during the Autumn Series was due to the 6/2 split on the bench: for the backs, Le Garrec as 9 and a versatile player able to play full back, winger. Ramos shifting 10 to 15, Dupont 9 to 10. That is why Jalibert was not on the bench.
Hard to properly analyze in terms of depth building indeed, as some players came to fill the gaps during the summer tour. And some others like Lamothe or Bochaton never got the opportunity to play while they are probably ranked higher than other who could get their first cap. Not surprising that Galthié asked to the top14 clubs to send more players for training camps.
More great content Mark :) P.S. Hasnt there been an 'auto-translate' option for subtitles for quite a while? Or does that only work when translating things INTO English?
Yeah man there is auto-translate that's for sure. But it's not the best with names "Jalibert" becomes "Jelly Bear" etc. Also rugby specific stuff I think it struggles - but for most vids I think it's enough. This one I figured isn't time sensitive so I could spend a little extra time on the subs
Yeah I might try to add some kind of labels next year - at least for the main guys - I think it might make things clearer right? Names next to all of them gets super messy because some of the slices are too small
I think more rotation is good not only to get test match experience for the youth but also some rest for key players Top14 schedule plus champions cup plus international tests is too much
Haha man they're tough - especially trying to remember which guys pronounce the S and which ones keep it silent... Ramos, Cros, Buros, Gros, Segonds etc 😅
Besides being red-carded the last time he put on a blue jersey, Willemse has been out for months due to repeated concussions and his career is very much up in the air at this point
Mark, as a French fan, I want to really emphasize how much I appreciate the care you put in pronouncing French names correctly. I'm sure it's not easy, but I assure you, it's appreciated. I will say Tixeront is pronounced with a "ks" sound as opposed to a "s" sound which you went with, but other than that small nitpick, I doubt there's any English-speaking TH-camr who gets it as right as you do. I'll add that I'd genuinely be interested in helping out with French subtitles (even just reviewing the AI-generated ones for obvious mistakes) if you want to.
No worries about the nitpick man - that's useful info - appreciate it😁 Hopefully the AI subtitles were at least mostly accurate. I asked the AI to translate the English > French. Then I watched the video with the French auto translated into English so I could check it. There were a few mistakes I found that way, but I'm sure some that slipped through. I would love you to do an analysis or let's say bar chart of which teams play more passionately for their country than others .Personally have South Africa and NZ top of the list . England zi think too. Ireland , France , Australia, Argentina , Scotland maybe not as much..
i dont get why you need to add in subtitles youtube does the same thing via auto translate anyway? click CC > click on cog go to subtitles and click auto translate and then pick french or your language of choice! whats so hard!
I genuinely don't know what that means. That's just how the coach positioned the players. It doesn't mean they all started there, but ended up there at some point during the game either by being shifted, subbed on or covering during a card etc
No wonder their numbers are irrationally high, its ridiculous you added the development game in regardless of test status. You didnt add in the All Blacks XV or the N.Z Maori player into the All Blacks figures for obvious reasons so i dont know why you would treat the french any differently

You're right mate it took a while across the year to gather all the information, but I love seeing the results 😁 Cheers!

No problem mate! Hope it was interesting :)
The French U20 have won the World Cup in 2018, 2019, 2023, and played the final in 2024, so many of these players are ready for the next level.
Yeah it's great to see the youth coming through (and getting a chance)
In 2023 they could have Louis Bielle-Biarrey and Gailleton in the U20 squad, instead they were in the team to prepare for the RWC
@kropotkine9640 they dont play top 14 players in 6nations u20 even this year they gave other players time off!

Without this game against Uruguay there still more than 60 players in the French team for this year
