@@jessicamccabe9101 Right!? Its so sad -.- Not just companies but consumers as well. Although many claim to not be materialistic we forget we are now living in time of being materialistic. My moms very old fashioned so for my son not to have "much" because we just weren't brought up that way was overwhelming. I found myself feeling pressured or bad for not wanting a crib or having a swing set or the "proper" pump. Like this video was my reassurance that I was going to be okay doing things different and no mother or parent should feel bad for feeling some type of way for any reason!

I have a friend who's son hated his crib, every night they would find him sleeping in their dog's bed on the floor. They ended up just buying him his own (took him to the pet store and let him try some out and decided which one he liked best) and putting it in his room. Sleeps through the night no problem now. if you want a crib, i suggest in investing in the kind that can be tuned into a toddler bed. my brothers bed that he’s had as an infant has lasted four years, still relevant and changed with him. i’m not sure what it’s called but 10/10

In the UK we call them cotbeds. I had them for all of mine. I got the ones which you can change the height, so it’s easier to pick them up. They still fit in them.. eldest is nearly 6.
Edit: obviously the 6 year old isn’t in a cot 😂 you lower it, and take the sides off.

A tip I learned from my sister. Use all those extra newborn socks for their hands. The mitts they make come off constantly making it more likely for baby to accidentally scratch themselves. Because socks have that stretchy part, they don't come off as easily. That's what I use my socks for.

Buying a stroller is like buying a car. You want it to grow with your kid to at least 3 years. Can you handle it alone? Does it move well? Is it sturdy enough for the terrain you will use? Factor this before picking out a registry. Only thing that doesn't matter is color. Carriers/Car Seats are the next to look and research. If doing a registry, ask for gift cards. Then you can shop for what you need, when you need it. Just came from a shower (ugh) and the first time mom ended up with an explosion of pink newborn to 6 month old clothes. Styles that weren't the parent's personalities. She spent time trying to exchange so much of these items to get things she truly needed.

Some of these kind of depend on where you live. I live in NY and had my baby during the winter. We used socks every single day, along with the wipe warmer so he wasn’t cold and screaming. And I also liked snap pajamas more than zipper pajamas because when he was asleep all I had to do was unsnap from the bottom remove his legs while the upper half of his body was still covered, wipe with a warm wipe, put the legs back in the leg sleeves, resnap and I was done.

My son loves his crib and been in it since he was 1 month, we loved our diaper genie, and couldn't live without a bottle warmer for the first 4 months. I tell new moms to wait before opening all of their baby items or washing all of their clothes.

Agree with so many of these. Especially the bottle warmer. Here's a lifesaver tip: just give your kid cool/room temperature bottles from day one. They will never get used to the warm bottle and therefore won't expect it. The crib I bought worked well for us for a long time, but we did need a mesh bumper like the one shown in the video, too. Our crib was made of iron with a nontoxic finish and the baby never wanted to chew it. Other moms, definitely heed her warning about wooden cribs!

Preemie moms/winter baby moms, I would say get the wipe warmer! You can find it cheaper secondhand. The instructions for the munchkin warmer calls for you to pour 1/4 cup of water over the wipes once you fill it, to stop the wipes from drying out. Never really had an issue with dry wipes doing this. Its worth it to me, I saved mine for baby #2, but everyone is different.
Also, in the NICU, our son’s nurses took baby temps throughout the day with an old school thermometer, but used it under their armpit. The temps have to be accurate because these fragile babies are usually in an incubator and cant retain body heat. So that is the method we used. I love your video!! So realistic and helpful!!
And agreed about the crib! Never needed one and dont plan on buying one for the second baby. Pack n play is a must!

Hmmm the crib was an interesting point of view. I bought a toddler conversion crib used for 50 bucks and she has used it from day 1. I skipped the whole bassinet thing as I just saw it as pointless, because we had enough space for a crib in our room. She stayed until about 14 months and now she is in her own room at 17 months. It was an easy transition for us, and she had never tried to escape the crib yet lol but when she does it converts to a toddler bed easily. Only thing I regret is the pack and play. We have used it very little.

I feel really prepared and I’m glad I made the decision to get them from day 1 so that I get optimum use. I can’t Imagine how frustrating your crib situation was! Waking up to a blood curdling scream would scare me to death and having to go in and get their arm or leg out would be so scary in case it got stuck.

I’m due in July, I do NOT want a crib. I took care of my nephews when they were little, I got a LOT of perspective. We will be using a floor bed and basket/bassinet/pack and play. Im super short- 4’10” I struggled so much to safely put the kids in and take them out of the crib. I’m subscribing to the pick my battles mentality.... I agree with a lot of these, based on my nephews. They stayed in onesies and jammies until they grew. No sense in giving myself self a headache over things. I’m taking this nice and easy... also, not doing a changing table. I found we changed the boys mostly on a towel on the floor or a towel on the bed. Why buy one more piece of furniture that I’m gonna have to get rid of later? I’m doing this very practically.

FearnTuckerBentley a floor bed is a very low bed on the floor. It’s has a mattress between the floor and baby. You should look into Montessori floor beds. There’s actually data supporting Montessori education techniques. Also, changing a child on the floor/bed on top of a towel is completely fine and well practiced by the majority of people that I know. There’s no reason to purchase a changing table if it simply won’t be used.

    • @HelgatheHorriblez
      @HelgatheHorriblez 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

FearnTuckerBentley there is NOTHING abusive about Montessori beds. www.burlapandblue.com/5-benefits-floor-bed-toddlers/. Your statements show how uneducated you are about Montessori. It’s not about letting your child run free and do as they wish. It’s about creating yes spaces that allow children the opportunity be inquisitive, learn problem solving skills, develop self care routines that are age appropriate, feel heard and accomplished and not “caging” your child out of fear or laziness. Montessori parenting requires a lot more release of parental fear, a lot more cultivating independence in your child, and a lot more education to promote in daily life. There are wait lists for Montessori programs for a reason. Children aren’t left free to roam, but allowed to do what interests them developing critical skills through out the task that is cross applicable to other critical tasks that are require for daily living. Young children love to wash clean plates and cups... why not allow that on a water table supporting dexterity and REAL life dish washing skills? My partner and I are not raising a snowflake that won’t be able to survive without round the clock care when they reach college. We are raising a well adjusted human that has their own interests and personality. Offering a low floor bed, that’s SAFE for the child to access and get out of on their own is NOT abuse. Children love sleeping on floor mats (most daycares only have floor mats for nap time) and I’ve witnessed first hand that children will chose a low bed that’s easily accessible to one that is high and out of reach. My nephews chose a Japanese floor futon to sleeping in their toddler beds or twin size bed because it was easier to get in and out of. I don’t know where you got your information on Montessori but, you’re severely misinformed. Also, there are many boundaries in Montessori. Nothing unsafe is allowed, nothing that can harm themselves, anyone else, or property is allowed. There is discipline but it’s needed less when children are taught from the start how to behave and what is appropriate behavior and what isn’t. Respect is earned. Children learn respect by being given respect. Children throw temper tantrums because they lack the vocabulary and problem solving skills to express their needs and desires. We are avoiding that by demonstrating good behavior, problem solving, and through respect. There will still be issues with expression but by allowing children to be curious- they act completely differently than by keeping them caged up like animals. All Montessori activities are over seen by an adult. Children are taught what is and isn’t allowed.

TuckerFearnBentley also my 18 month old is far too short for a full size single bed. He also has far from outgrown his crib, has never gotten his feet stuck and all of my other children could sleep in cribs turned into toddler beds up until around 4 which I then gave them a twin size bed.

Crib works wonderfully for me started from day one til now my son is 8 months old. Buy a crib that can be lowered and changed into toddler bed. The front rail can be changed with open rail when he becomes toddler. :)

You've gotten some good points, but the thing that everyone needs to remember is that you know yourself best, and keep that in mind when thinking about what to buy and what not to buy. I listened to dozens of videos like these before my first was born, and ended up getting frustrated for listening to everyone's advice without taking my own personality into consideration. I bought all the zipper sleepers, and hated them. The zipper would buckle up and look nasty and I thought they were uncomfortable when cuddling with baby. Also, my pumpkin had chubby little legs, and most zippered ones are slightly smaller around on the leg with the zipper so I could barely even zipper them up unless she was swallowed up in one that was way to big for her. Also, if you really think you'll want some cute little outfits and shoes, buy one or two just so you have them on hand should you want them. I was given a diaper genie and absolutely loved it! I used it hard for 2 years, and never had any trouble with it. If your baby is born in the cooler months, just set up your diaper changing station close to a vent, and store your wet wipes on or beside it. We were very happy we went with a crib, especially since we got one that converted to a toddler bed and she ended up hating her pack and play.

2 of mine would ONLY and I mean ONLY sleep in their Infant car seats, so I propped them Inside of the Bassinet... and kept them next to bed... of course this was nearly 20 amd 17 yrs ago.. Everything/every **RULE** has Once again CHANGED. . It was a Life saver.. Esp if the bassinet had the Vibrating motion.. it depicted **a Car ride** which always Puts baby's to sleep... we had tried EVERYTHING up until that point even a ROUND Crib.. again, Nothing worked but that!! Hated hated hated sleeping Flat no matter WHAT I tried to use and wanted to be **Propped** up while sleeping, and would sleep sooo very soundly as opposed to anywhere else I had tried!! It helped to be elevated for breathing etc.. and I believe the **CLOSENESS** Of the Car seat felt Safe and secure to them.. Kinda like being in the Wish these had been made so many years ago!!!
Yes I know there has been a RECALL But again, This was Years ago.. My last to use one is Now 10yrs old... Was, HANDS DOWN The Best product EVER, Hands down, in MY opinion!! Congrats to all The New and expecting Mommy's❤

I think the crib experience is very different for all parents, so it really depends on your child too. My son has slept in his crib since newborn till now and he is 2yo. He has never tried to climb out of it and he knows his crib is for sleeping only. Therefore, you really can't tell until it happens since every kid is different. Whatever works best for you to keep your sanity and keep your children safe. Oh and there are many affordable cribs that can still be safe too. Choose what is best for you.

  • @spamberalert

FYI for anyone lurking - Crib bumpers (even "breathable" ones-that's not even an industry standard term, so it's meaningless to a consumer) and those rail covers aren't considered safe for a baby sleep environment. If you're going to buy all that stuff with a crib, just use the pack n play instead (like the maker of the video wished she had done). You'll save money, and your child will be safe.

I actually dress my son every day and always have . I don’t stay in my pjs all day so neither does he ! We don’t use shoes (not yet) but socks are an absolute must for us ! So I highly recommend socks for parents who want to dress their babies . We loved our bottle warmer when my son was fresh out of the nicu . It has a timer so you just choose the amount of time you use it for . We use the under the arm thermometer as that’s what is closest to rectum thermometer and what was recommended by my son ! We love our hooded towels and I wish we had more ! We absolutely needed our crib . My son didn’t sleep in the basinet and has slept in his crib from day 1 . Mesh bumpers aren’t safe for infant sleep (neither is crib rail covers) . Our crib also transitions into a bed . Just different opinion! Thanks for sharing yours ! :)

THIS!!! @11:31 I love it! I love this lady. I didn't buy half this stuff. My BG has a bassinet and I certainly water to warm up her bottle (the gifted bottle warmer is horrible. I always miss the mark). She also HATES swaddles and so on a colder night I put socks and a onsie on under her PJs.
I just try to keep it simple. It helps me to cope and BG is happy.

Thanks for sharing. It's hard not to get caught up preparing for a newborn, knowing your really unsure in the first place, n being financially restricted. Esp buying cute lil outfits, I'm sure it's exciting and fun, but easily becomes wasted money if shopping for the cuteness of the experience as opposed to what's practically going to be needed. Again, great vid, thanks

Mom of 4 with 5 almost here..I love this video. Going to showers kills me because of all these things they get and dont need...You hit the nail on the head! So true about newborn clothes...My 1 1/2 year old is still in a pack and play and he loves it. At 2 they go in a toddler bed type thing. I literally have normal blankets for swaddling, a basket of essential clothes that I know I'll use, generic diapers / wipes, 2-4 good bottles as needed, bassinet for early on and pack and play for the next step. Thats it! GREAT VIDEO!! I hope new moms watch this and listen!!!!!!!!

I will be having twins in September, they will be having a crib of their own, the nursery is big enough to fit two and because their grandparents (mom and dads parents) are gifting them with their own. I have been looking at a twin pack and play to use in our room when they are new borns so they can be closer to us until they are old enough to sleep in their cribs across from our room. The cribs will be one that converts as they get older to make their grandparents money worth it lol.

I totally agree with you about the crib. I worked in daycare for a number of years and we transitioned infants from cribs to cots at 18 months to prep them for the toddler room. A crib never made sense to me because it's a lot of money invested in a short period of time. We used a pack n play. It was wonderful. We rolled it to whatever room we were in. So nice when you're at home recovering. Also, we could fold the whole thing up and bring it with us on overnight trips. Wherever we were our daughter's sleeping space was familiar. It really took the stress out of traveling with a baby.

For us it was a small luxury we could afford - our newborn absolutely H A T E S being cold ever in any way, and would scream during nighttime diaper changes. We felt bad for our neighbor, who sleeps right on the other side of our wall, so we got it. It’s been great for us.

  • @monti42

I agree with everything except the....crib, Wipe warmer, and bottle warmer are great buys if used correctly!
1st - when purchasing a wipe warmer you have to also purchase the ever-fresh replacement pillows, these go at the bottom of your wipe warmer to keep your wipes moist... you soak with water and flip the pad once a week for 3 months then replace. I never had a dry wipe when doing this! Plus I was lucky that my baby did not care if the wipe were warm or cold but I thought it was a good purchase and worked with no issues.
2nd - my bottle warmer was $12, I followed the instructions using the measuring cup that came with the bottle warmer and I had warm breast milk in at least 30secs depending on how much milk I was warming, that’s a fast time if you’re feeding a hungry baby...definitely useful and we took it everywhere, even on vacation.
The crib was a good purchase, our baby didn’t go into it until she was 8 months and we always had a bumper installed, so no issues there...we did use a 4-n-1 pack n play until we were ready for her to use her crib....she didn’t start climbing out her crib until she was about 1.5 yo but we just turned it into a toddler bed after that, and we turned it again into a full-size bed now that she’s 3. We plan for her to have a full-size bed until she graduates high school. when it comes to cribs, always buy the 3 n 1, so you can get more use out of it...but I swear by my 4 n 1 pack n play, that’s awesome as well.

Crib... Individual choice. My first son was in a crib because our house was built in 1919 and had an open foundation and wood floors. Meaning, it was too cool at floor level for baby during fall, winter and spring. I agree with if on a budget, tight on space consider a pack and play. Just don't let baby sleep with you. Father rolled over onto Middle-Son and nearly smothered him. Gadgets in general I am not a fan of in the kitchen or baby's room. Wipe warmers are silly starting with wipes are expensive and environmental nightmares for the sake of convenience. Bottle warmers. I had a crock pot my sister borrowed and broke the glass lid. After killing a few bottles in a sauce pot, I filled the crock pot with water, turned on low and keep it on all day. Just put in a bottle whenever I needed it and only had to refill once a day.
I'm all for changes, improvements and aides when it comes to our lifestyles. But most of this stuff is just marketing ploys preying on people (mothers) who have this image of what motherhood is suppose to look like. It isn't glamorous but it isn't hair raising either. The smallest person in the house doesn't need all this crap.

With my kid second I also just used a pack n play with bassinet. We had a crib the turned into a toddler bed that i had and used for my oldest. And it just ended up being set up and very used because of everything you said. She would get her legs stuck and chew an all of the wood and then would climb out. Pack n play for the win. Never any issues with it. Best thing ever.

Yes to so much of this. Due in july, second time mom here, Warm bottles aren't even necessary. I never once warmed a bottle with my son. He drank just fine. Wipe warmers do dry out wipes, never needed one even having a winter baby. And so long as your house is decently warm wipes are never "cold" anyway. I used a crib with my son. But this time i got a pack n play with a bassinet attachment. I don't even buy swaddles. I use recieving blankets similar to the hospital kind and swaddle them just like we do in the hospital. I plan on buying a 3 inch pack n play mattress for when we put her in the pack n play itself after she grows out of the bassinet attachment. Can't wait to have my girl :3

Chassity Caraballo good information, thanks! I’m a first time mom (due in July, as well) and trying hard to not over buy. • @chassamber
      @chassamber 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ohbrandyjune it can be tempting to overbuy these days. Even me. Especially now that im having my first girl. I want to buy all the unnecessary girly frilly things, canopy for the pack n play, like a thousand bows that she probably won't keep on her head 🤣 it's even easier to do so with your very first baby. I forgot to add, burp cloths are also useless. Because 1.) They are so small it's easy for babies to literally spit up all over you and miss the cloth entirely. 2.) By the time the baby is 2 months and docs reccomend to stop swaddling those recieving blankets become burp cloths. And are much more effective at the job given their size.
