This species just became my favourite. Everything is amazing. How it saw the fish from that far away and under the water, how it got the fish at the first strike, the way it kills the fish, the way it cleans himself after eating. Incredible.

i have one of these beauties in a cat carrier right now. She knocked herself concussed on a plexi partition down at the harbour. i tried to shoo her into the bushes and she came straight to me. hopefully this morning she will be able to fly away. i put my hand into the carrier this morning to change the water and she hopped right on, was expecting a brutal peck, instead, a very gentle grip and her head cocked looking at me. What an honour! i hope she flies true this morning🤞🤞🤞🤞🙏💚.

Wow that is amazing.. How it catch, smack, and eat that fish..didn't know it smack the fish before eat..and it did it hard! The fish must be : "O God.. O God.. Urgh.. Urgh.." 😂 😅..,, its wild! Really some great footage to see.. thanks for sharing! 👍
I'd imagine it's more likely instinctual muscle memory. Feral kittens have a tendency to bite their food and then shake their heads quickly back and forth as if to snap the neck of a small animal, even if never trained to do so. It's likely that some kingfishers started doing this and it ended up helping them not choke or cause damage from a conscious fish inside them, and so they lasted more often than others.
Amazing that they make sure the fish is dead before swallowing...due to size it probably would not be fun if that fish were squirming around in the digestive tract....it is
For those wondering why the kingfisher is beating the fish, it to render it unconscious so when the kingfisher swallows, it'll have no issues with the fish not wiggling it way down to the stomach.

That camera has a wide-angle lens, so to capture a large portion of the environment, thus everything appears farthest, but in reality, it's not.

The precision of spotting a fish from that far and getting it in one try
I don't think people would react well if I started treating my catches this way 😂
Its the most natural way. Do what you must do. One hard hit. Dont abuse

It even cleans its bill once done! Wood is a great napkin!
1:55 the bird looking at the camera "well is this what you wanted to see? well is it? you freak!"
The fact that it knows to smack the fish against the wood shows that it understands mortality or even the existence of a brain in animals
A lot of animals know about the brain, its what Bears go for first in salmon
