Little tidbit of info on kingfishers, Eiji Nakatsu was a birdwatcher and engineer for the company that built/operated the bullet trains "Shinkansen" in Japan. He was inspired by kingfishers to solve the trains sonic boom problem when exiting tunnels (pressure differentials). Kingfishers dive from one fluid (air) into one 800 times more dense (water) with very little splash. The aerodynamics of the bullet train were modified with the kingfisher as inspiration.
Their german name is Eisvogel (Icebird), while the "ice" is most likely coming from their iridescent feathers. Beautiful birds. Königsfischer (Kingfisher) was an old synonym for this bird here.
Interesting, in The Netherlands we call them the same "ijsvogel". Everytime the name or bird is mentioned, people point out that it actually does not like ice and has an ironic name. Don't know if true.
Could you do a video on the Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat? Even here in Australia most people don’t know it exists despite it being one of the rarest mammals on earth!
Daniel Johnstone there is actually three species of wombat today, the common wombat (or Forrest wombat), the southern Hairy Nosed wombat and the Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat It’s the Northern Hairy Nosed who is critically endangered

I remember the first time I heard a kookaburra. I was 18 and wondering if it was a bird, a monkey, a chupacabra, an alien, or something like that. It was outside my sister's house. I'd hear them during night time.
14th years ago I saw the "White-throated Kingfisher" it was the first time I realized that bird is really amazing. From that moment, I noted that I really loved the bird and then I became a birder from that time. Amazing bird, dear.
I discovered your channel not too long ago, and animal videos are the only videos I can really watch, so I’m very happy that you put in so much hard work into these amazing educational videos for us! Please do a video on kites sometime!!

Awesome video. You and Deep Look are my favorite nature channels here on TH-cam by far. Enjoyable commentary (and commentators), interesting facts, and cool animals!
Believe me, these guyz have PhD on diving and accuracy... And pied kingfishers are amazing... They have PhD on diving, accuracy & gliding... The way they dive from a standstill position is mind boggling...
Man, seeing them dive with pinpoint accuracy gives me a lot of respect for these little birdbrains. I dived only once headfirst and that time I penetrated at least 3m of water and hit my head on the ground. I thus wonder how they prevent slamming their long beak into the ground.
didn't even know Sangihe has an endemic kingfisher species until this video also pronunciation note: the island name is pronounced sang-ee-he (the Indonesian I sounds like the english E)
In Dutch (and Norwegian as well apparently) we call it the ice bird, which is really funny because they keep dying en masse everytime winter gets slightly cold.
i'd like to know how the river/water kingfishers have their feathers still dry enough to fly out of the water? sure it's only a quick dive and out, but still
There are two kingfishers that nest near our house which is by the water. They stay up on the trees and sometimes when you get close to the nests they come diving towards you and make aggressive noises. Someone even got hit and started bleeding

@@Baddy187 Yeah it is, part of the reason they're so rare is because a lot of them die whenever temperatures get low.
How did they get the shot of a kingfisher catching a fish from underwater. Impressive.
Set up tank shot...... Cut tails off fish. Absolute cruelty to the fish and birds often get injured and killed. Trust me, its true 👍

Im not there yet, but Im guessing you're referring to the kookaburra or belted kingfisher.
Wow kingfishers dive better than olympic divers
Give us a few million years of evolution , and let's see them take us on :p
Because they are naturally designed for diving into the water.
Tragoudistros.MPH lol, I was about to say
They are looking for food directly while divers are after millions of money
Kingfishers will beats the Olympics champions easily

Of course they can

archer fish can also compensate for refraction, when targetting prey with their precise spray of water
if birds can dive, can fish fly?
4:46 they also use their maniacal joker laugh to wake up Australia at 6am on random days
