I just finished reworking my McLane 3 hp Briggs edger. The carb has no accelerator pump. I removed the carb, gas tank, and muffler. I removed the only jet in the carb and cleaned all the passages including the plastic tube screen. I replaced the spark plug and cleaned the other components very well. My starter pull was hanging, so I removed the cover and lubed everything up. I almost had to remove the motor to allow the cover to clear the brackets! After replacing the belt, air filter element, and greasing and lubing everything, and refilling the gas tank with fresh gas, the motor started on the second pull! Thanks for the video!
By far the best video I’ve seen on a simple fix and what to check for pretty detailed even for someone who may not work on their own equipment. Thank you so much. This is a gem of a toy from the days

Sometimes the lever does not push to full throttle. Follow the linkage down to the carburetor and mess with it to see if that’s the issue. Just a thought👍🏼
I just bought the same edger but it is used. It wouldn’t start when I bought it but I noticed it had a deteriorated and cracked rubber boot that went from the carb to that cylindrical thing beside the carb (on the blade side). I am hoping that once I fix that, it will run again. I got it for $250 Canadian today and these sell for close to $1,000 Canadian. I hope the rubber piece fixes it.
Got a mcclane mower 20 inch. My throttle linkage is not right. Could you send a pic of the springs, to the selectors and throttle arm.owners manual doesn’t have it.
I am working on getting a McLean edger running and found the down tube out of the carb (fuel line) broke- do you know where I can buy just the down tube / fuel line line?
I'm still working on mine, it's exactly the same one you have. I replaced the pull up rope changed spark plug and oil but it still won't start. Rope jams still.
99% chance that your CARBURETOR is clogged up. Super easy, just remove the air cleaner, take a can of compressed air and CARBURETOR cleaner and spray it through the little holes. Should start right up👍
Was given one of these probably been sitting forever but it white smokes bad.. bad gasket seal or just needing good tune up ? Oil that was in it was almost milk color? Gas and oil mix maybe
When the oil looks milky that means water is mixed with the oil. It probably sat outside and got water in it. Drain the oil, put fresh stuff in. Maybe also a new spark plug. Should be good to go👍🏼
These things are honestly very bulletproof! Nothing major ever goes wrong with them (head gasket). Just make sure the oil is clean. Might even change it twice to make certain. Goodluck
The wheels right beside each other (as pictured in the video) allow room for the blade to tilt at an angle. If you put the spacer between the wheels, it’s for regular 90-degree edging.

Dude, clean that filthy funnel prior to pouring fresh oil in. Clean the machine prior to opening her up. As in checking the oil and removing the air filter or carb.

Bought mine 25 years ago and finally I need to replace the throttle cable. This edger sells for $579.00 today. As you said, Bullet Proof !!!
What is the purpose of the wheels in front moving freely on the shaft? Then it looks like you put a spacer in there?

It's 1/2" to 1" max depth per the McLane manual.
What did you spray on the engine to clean it?
My favorite engine cleaners are Simple Green, Purple Power (used in video) or brake cleaner👍🏼

I bought one today and I'm so disappointed. My stick edger is 26cc and way more powerful than this thing

Check your revs out with a tach on the spark plug. Run it at 3600 no load rpms. Sounds like operator error to me.
