1977 Toyota Celica Liftback Rescue - Parked for 20 years!
This 1977 Toyota Celica Liftback has been sitting off the road for the past 20 years! I stumbled upon it in a Facebook group where the owner was asking for advice on its value. Noticing the local license plates, I reached out to him and arranged to check it out in person. In this video, you’ll hear the car’s history, watch as we negotiate the price, and see how we bring this classic home.
Leave a comment below and let me know if you think it was a good deal! And don’t forget to subscribe-I’ve got a full build series planned for this Japanese legend. They used to call it the "Japanese Mustang." Will it run? Stay tuned to find out!

I just got two of these for 50$ about to start my project this really helps
I got one. I've just recovered the trunk from a local body shop and it look brand new. Its a really nice car. You'll enjoy it once it run well. I own mine since 2009.
Carpenter woodworker clamp on clutch
Be nice to have no music I want to hear the engine
Why did you have all that crap in the trunk up until just before you sold it?
sanex scooter?
Would you be able to show how you blocked it ?!
Has anybody ever mentioned that the screws Honda used are NOT Philips Head. They are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screws and to avoid tearing up the heads JIS screwdrivers and driver bits are available. If you look closely at the heads many will have a small dimple, like a pin punch dot, indicating they are JIS screws.
Hey man love your video, could you explain to me how you put the new cover on? Did you re-staple it? I just ordered a new seat cover for mine but am at a bit of a loss how to install it.
@@stig_k7012 yes, re-staple it. super easy! get a good stapler and short staples
@Mechanic_kid sweeet thanks man🙏🙏
Good video. I bought a Honda Vision NE50. An 86 scooter from my teenage so you can work out how old I am now. Even though I've been on bigger bikes for 36 years I found the version I liked as a teenager but never had because I started on a 125, now riding 1300's so this is the smallest bike I've ever had. She doesn't start very well so going to have to give her a good service. Although I maintain/service my own bikes your video gives me an idea what I'm looking at as these scooters under the plastics are pretty much the same. Was under the impression the solenoid was an automatic choke? Have to check the manual. Thanks again.
I learned so much about carburetor in this 1 video🤯 thanks man
My dad have a 1978 Celica The car still good 👍 for $2000
He probably didn't really wanna sell it
Congrats
Congratulations on the car. Did he come down on his price, or did you pay his asking price?
@@kogers5595 I paid $2,000. Clean title. Overall, a solid car! Stay tuned more to come soon 🤟🏼
@Mechanic_kid I think it was a fair price.
Sweet Celica
Get ahold of his paint guy!! 😄
@@dcs1106 🤣🤣🤣
the owner had a lot of dreams but no ambition as well as he his paint guy sounds like he could do everything lol! Good luck to the new owner can't wait it see the end results!
@@jeffceballo7747 Thanks Jeff! I’m not a paint guy but I think I can get it back on the road🤣
@Mechanic_kid keep up the good work can't wait to see the end results 👍
Good luck with it! There’s a ton of support for these on forums and on Facebook pages. I daily drove a 77 coupe from 2002 to 2018, even swapped a 7M from an 88 Supra into it the second time the 20R went.
@@jacobgarfinkel2957 Thanks Jacob! Wow that’s awesome!
must have sold it because no pt2 and no further uploads about this car
@@thelasthallow Still got it! Rebuilding the 440 soon. Should be on the road this summer🤟🏼
@@Mechanic_kid cool, i will look out for that.
Extremely important that those pins should be lubricated with special silicon grease (critical it's silicon or it will dissolve the rubber boot)
Great find! Looks complete and as preserved as it can be for being outside. I wish I had as good of a starting point. I drug mine to Shelton, WA from Missouri and brought all the rust (and the air where the floorboards and rockers should be)with me. Good luck! Great start for a project!
@@Ron77celica Thanks Ron! You should make a video of your Celica- I’d love to see it.
I Havent seen too many Celicas in Washington! Subbed two years ago when I bought my 74 coupe and I had a feeling you were local but I never looked at any plates till now. I hope to see it out in the wild some day!
@@iloveurella Let’s get a PNW group together and cruise 🤟🏼
That car is worth $1,500 all day. Also, you rarely can get your money back out of an old car.
Please let it rev
so many dudes like this smh. things worth 1500
Well then keep your pos
how much do you want to sell the celica for ?
i had a 74 and it got wrecked before i could really work on it, there fun cars. what state are you in ?
Nice good job
Gonna be looking at a 1987 Honda aero 50 with 5,600 miles on it, owner said its working smooth as butter and well maintained, you think itd be worth the purchase around $1400?
I am happy to come across this Video. I have an NC50 bought new in 1977 when I arrived here in U.S. in Atlanta. It was primary mode of transportation to work and back and then became my transportation to/from University (Marietta-Atlanta). I loaned it on other needy foreign students for their use and passed several hands. When I moved from Atlanta the bike moved with me. I keep it for sentimental reasons as well as for a restoration project with my son after retiring. I am ready to get started 2025 spring when the weather warms up in New England. Can I use any tips from you as well as from any others regarding purchasing/making parts, service manuals etc. Looking forward to hearing from anyone. Sri.
Wanted to say mine is the Same color as in this Video!!
When u take the gas moped to fix and u hear the front desk that thy need to be faster in gas propellation extreme hot heat that can explode in youre face. Like go to a restaurant see who moves and who just stands and stares no cleaning at all . Iam not telling u fast i do neurologically stop my body doesnt let me move fast. Asking all year five days fast movement with one week off.
Did you use a spacer on the counter shaft? It did not look like it. Thanks
I have a Little Wonder Briggs and Stratton 3.5.It used to start, but it won’t any more. I think I’ll try to clean the carb.
Thanks!
I think your dad wants it and will give you what you advertise it for. You'll them sell it to him for what you've spent on it.
A bit of lube, I believe would have helped...?
I weigh 230. You think it could still move that good with that weight?
the spark plug cap on mine had an elbow
but they're still better than the chinese made scooters
my exhaust had to be replaced after 4 months
1:09 that’s what he said 😅
My man 🤣
fake dust?
12:13 i learned my lesson on that lol, had one of the little pocket flatheads slip and go into the webbing between my thumb and pointer and barely poke out the other side. lemme just say im extra mindful of putting pressure on something while a part of me is on the other side of the object
Thirty + years ago had one like this. MG name of the colour is harwest gold. My friends without MG callled it mustard.
I’ve fixed many scooters, many different conditions and situations, I got a free 2011 Tao tao 50 it was sitting almost a decade under an oak tree rotting away, the throttle was rusted shut the carb broke in two when I took it off, water in the oil lmao, so I drained out the old gas threw on a good carb rigged up a good throttle cable and bypassed the key switch so tomorrow I’m gonna try to fire it up, the valves may need adjusted and a couple other odds and ends but If I can get it going it’ll be the rustiest scooter ever to run the streets in my town 🛵 🛞 💨 🔧
I had a Honda Elite 80, bought brand new in 2005. Huge mistake. It was a terrible scooter, in just about every way. It was slow (the 2005 Yamaha Zuma 50 would outrun it) had no storage, was very difficult to work on, and had starting and running problems. Despite solid steel wheels, it had tube type tires, and a flat meant a tow truck. I sold it and bought a 2008 Yamaha Vino 125. I now wish I had kept the Elite 80 (but still bought the Vino 125) because you just don't see them anymore. A huge number of them were made, and they all seem to have disappeared. That is a CV (constant velocity) carburetor. They went to that strictly because of emissions. They have never worked as well as the older style carbs. Leave it to the EPA to F things up. That rattling may be coming from the belt drive CVT. They tend to be somewhat noisy, especially at idle. The final drive should have 80w90 gear oil, not engine oil. Amazing you were able to get it going. I was not able to quite get mine up to 40 mph, and it was new.
Always start with a carb clean. 7 times out of 10 things just need a carb clean 👍
Very nice work!!
i'd love to have an Elite 80 how fast were they supposed to go?
