My hips measure 38” to 40” but I wear UNIQLO jeans ( and most pants in Japan) that are size 73.5cm. My best guess is that Japan measures pants by half the waist circumference maybe?( my actual Uniqlo size is “29” but it’s noted that’s it’s 73.5cm) I didn’t do any converting actually except in shoes, I based all my numbers on comparable garments I had/have or that friends had. And what their Japanese labels say compared to their US size Hope that helps!

I keep watching this video to know what I should pack as I'm moving to JP this Sunday! Just small mistake. Size EU38 is US 7 / 7.5 not 8. US size 8 is EU 39 I am a size EU38 and wearing a US 8 is too big for me. Edit: I think I might have issues finding pants that fits. I'm 163cm but my legs are long. I'm worried for the stockings.

Thanks for watching! You make a good point! I only talk about JETs! So, thinking about my CIR friends, they had more office type jobs and were usually much more formally dressed. But a quadrille shirt is just a button down, right? That should be okay. From MY MEMORY The girls wore slacks/skirts/black jeans and nice blouses pretty much everyday. Everyone in the offices that were boys wore business attire. I asked my CIR friend, who’s a girl, about her office. Here’s her response, “Business casual should be okay. Like smart trousers and a collared shirt, with or without a tie, but probably with is better just in case, and maybe a blazer? But it doesn't have to be a full suit everyday. You still need a suit for big events or meetings though. I (a female)wore black skinny jeans and an office style blouse or collared shirt usually, but my office was pretty relaxed. Most of the Japanese guys wore smart trousers or slacks/ chino kind of trousers and collared shirts (polo shirts or short sleeved collared shirts in summer was normal), having a blazer or some kinda smartish jacket is good for formal situations or unexpected interpreting.” So, my advice, If you wear a mens M or L (or smaller) in the west ( you didn’t say your country so I’ll just assume you’re US because of the group you’re in) then you’ll be able to buy shirts here. If you’re bigger than that, I’d say you should get at least 3 long sleeve button downs and a comfy suit, blazer and shoes. Then bring the quadrille shirts and a few polos. Most of those offices you get to wear your outdoor shoes inside. I don’t remember taking my shoes off when I had to visit the offices. But it’s possible they have indoor shoes at your location. Wear a backpack or shoulder bag with a suit is fine here. So no need for a briefcase or anything. Does that help?

Oh! Sorry something about the way you phrased it sounded like a boy! For girls, just business casual attire, except a little more formal. My friends wore skirts, slacks, capris, dresses, and nice tops. Bottoms downs are fine too, but so are office appropriate blouses. They did all say that skirts needed stockings though. Most of the girls wore flats or small heels, closed toe mostly or peep toe was ok with stockings. Girls don’t need ties! Haha. Only boys. They wore cardigans and formal sweaters but they said they kept a suit jacket on their chair at their desk in case something popped up. I hope that better helps! Sorry for the gender mix-up! Hello!! I have tattoos on my arms and am planning bringing nothing but long sleeve shirts (or lots of jackets) for work since they're not big on tattoos. do you think that's probably wise of me? or are they more laid back on that?
When you touched on swimsuits, you didn't mention whether a bikini is ok. As I have a larger chest, I think it would be smart to bring one of my own swimsuits (just in case), but am not sure if it should be a more conservative one piece or if my existing bikini would be acceptable Ty
Great question! Sorry for the late reply! You are probably packing now! This will dependant on WHERE you end up wearing it. Most people here wear rash guards when actually out at beaches etc, so you can get those here to cover a bikini if you feel way over exposed at an event or something. If you go to like a community pool, a bikini would stick out pretty extremely. But at a lake or beach where people BBQ, it would be fine as long as the girls are contained. I go to Lake Biwa in Kansai often and I see LOTs of foreigners (lots of brazillian mostly) in bikini, but when i went river rafting in kyoto, or went to the beach with my school kids, i was THANKFUL to have my rash guard and skirt type bottoms. Happy packing!
Recently show options have increased. I’m not 100% sure, but I’d think that if you went to a big shoe store that they have more Sizes in the back you can try. But men’s shoes and sneakers go bigger. So size 9 sneaker wise is doable for sure. It’s more the cute girl shoes that you’ll have trouble with.

You can also just wear undershirts like light T-shirts to catch the sweat marks. I did that.

Yea, I plan to lose 65 pounds before going to Japan so it's easier to shop but I'm bringing pants,bras and underwear since I'm bigger in those areas.

really helpful video! I'm not sure but I think some of the feet/inches and centimetres conversion were a bit off? 73cm is more like 28 inches I think.

I'm a US women's size 9 in shoes. Do foreign brands like Nike usually carry only until US 8.5 in Japan?
