  • What a month it has been. I honestly couldn't fit all the ups & downs in this video, but hopefully you can get a sense of some the obstacles you may (or may not) face when moving to Japan through the JET Program! I know a lot of incoming JETs have been riding this rollercoaster trying to enter Japan, from the stress of postponed departure dates to getting here and being thrust into a new environment and expected to just know what to do. You aren't alone in that!
    I am incredibly fortunate to have the placement that I have and be supported by so many wonderful people.

    Hello everyone! Thanks for watching this video! As of August 2023, I'm no longer an ALT with the JET Program (I left on good terms!). I won't be responding to comments on this video anymore, but you can still connect with me on Instagram @chelseav_jp
    Thanks for supporting this channel the past 2 years, it was fun creating videos about being an ALT!

    Congrats on your accomplishment! I wish you well and a happy time in Japan. I lived in Okinawa for 5 yrs so I know you will enjoy mainland Japan. There may be days you're super tired and not wanting to do ANYTHING, don't let your fears of language and simply not knowing stop you from exploring and having a good time.

    Hi Chelsea. I stumbled upon one of your videos while checking out dress codes for ALT`s (you didn`t have one, but you might want to consider doing one in the future 😅). I am also a foreigner and I have been residing in Japan for 12 years. I worked at a hospital for 10 years and this video really made me reminisce of myself 12 years ago. The year after my college graduation, I arrived in Japan, took 6 months of intensive language and culture training, got enrolled at a vocational school for two years, then worked at a hospital for 10 years. It was a wild ride, now that I think about it, especially after watching this video and listening to what you`ve been through. I`ve had my ups and downs, loneliness kept creeping all the time too, but on most days I think I was just busy learning new things, talk with the people around me even though my Japanese was still poorly back then, and went to visit a lot of places as much as I could. And, I just realized I`m still here. I decided to change my work environment so I resigned from my previous career and decided to pursue becoming an ALT. I could see that you`re a tough cookie. I`m cheering for you. I`ll add you in instagram and when you have the time or want to unwind, you can come visit me in Shizuoka prefecture. I would love to show you around.

    hi! did you give your jikoshoukai in english or japanese? has it been difficult communicating or teaching your students in english, or are you expected to teach a bit in japanese?? thanks! and i also love how much more your new couch fits with your room's aesthetic than the other one XD

    • @chelseav
      @chelseav  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      thanks nicole! i gave a very short introduction to teachers/principals in japanese, but my self-intro lessons with my students were all in english! i think it helps to know a bit of japanese but definitely not necessary for you to start working

    Hi Chelsea.. We’re you able to pick up a Japanese SIM card at the airport? I’ve heard once you get to the airport a shuttle picks every traveler up and you won’t be able to buy a SIM card from the airport

    • @chelseav
      @chelseav  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Emilie! I got a sim card through Mobal, and they had a coordinated pick-up option at my quarantine hotel. This was specific to the JET Program, so I'm not sure if this will be available for you. Please contact your employer for their recommendations!

    Are you or did you going to converted your international driver's license for a real Japanese driver's license. You should. It will be official. The cost will be the fee to take the driving test and it will be one in a life time experience to do. How is LA these days? I have not been back for quite awhile now.

    • @chelseav
