Ventrac 4500Z with Flat Faced Hydraulic Couplers!?!

  • In this video I'm upgrading the auxiliary hydraulic couplers on the Ventrac 4500Z and talking about some food-for-thought reasons to switch to flat faced hydraulic couplers. Flat faced couplers have been around for many years and are mainly seen on construction equipment such as skid steer loaders, compact track loaders, backhoes, excavators, etc. There are many pros to flat faced hydraulic couplers and very, very few cons. I will also be making another video in the future on my overall thoughts on the flat faced hydraulic couplers, you know, the good, the bad and the ugly, so to speak.
On another note, this is my first video of this "style" so there are some things that I wanted to do that I could't quite figure out how to do with the video editing software I'm using. It's certainly a learning experience with video editing, even with all the tutorials. Speaking to a camera also isn't as easy as it may seem. Sometimes you turn the camera on and your brain goes blank or you try to speak and what comes out is applesauce-penguin. If only you knew how many "takes" were taken for this one video.......
Thank you for watching and have a wonderful day!
Here's a link to a video that I came across with awesome animations showing the "differences" between the Pioneer (Poppet) quick coupler and the Flat Faced quick coupler: • Stucchi Quick Coupling...

Excellent idea! All good points to dump the pioneer couplers. One of the draw backs I have found is the dust covers are usually very dirty after mowing etc, and you have to clean them off before using. The only draw back to swapping is having to buy 12 pair of couplings!! I was surprised you didn’t use any thread sealant.

NPT threads are tapered, so the seal is made via the metal-to-metal wedging of the threads. No thread sealant needed.

@@westriverlawnsnow3452 I know thats the way its supposed to be, but I have had to reseal a few lines using the blue sealant before on some attachments.

I'm so tired of the mess and losing hydro fluid by switching attachments. After watching your video I purchased all the flat faced couplers I needed from Summit. The only problem I just thought about is if I rent an attachment from my local Ventrac dealer, those hoses will not work. Perhaps I need a couple extra couplers in that case to swap them quickly during a rental. Thanks!

Did you mean to post the link for the NPT thread couplers, because I believe the Ventrac's use SAE thread. I ask because the couplers I purchased from Summit don't fit, based on your link above. Thanks.

There's going to be oil loss no matter what style coupler you use. Not worth the time or money

@@timadamany NPT is the correct thread type. The SAE thread type uses an o-ring. When you unthreaded the coupler, did yoy see a rubber o-ring? Are you the original owner of the machine? It would be really odd, but certainly possible for someone to switch to the SAE thread type. 🤔 I wish I would have seen this comment sooner, unfortunately I never received a notification for it. Did you get things straightened out or are you still working on it?

@@MyDc85 Ventrac themselves would have gone to flat face style couplers on the 4520 had they not already had numerous attachments and tractors with the pioneer style. The SSV and it's attachments have flat face style couplers. In my opinion, it's ABSOLUTELY worth the money to switch to flat face couplers. You REALLY see the value when you use the machine commercially and have several attachments you need to switch to and from numerous times throughout the day on a project.

@@westriverlawnsnow3452 All the attachements, according to the parts diagram state they are all SAE. I have a 2022 4520Z for the record. The first set of couplers I bought from Summit were NPT, and they did not fit, as the threads were not the same. The replacment SAE couplers fit beautifully.

I am not concerned about the small loss of fluid and do not mind cleaning the plugs; but I hate it when an implement has been parked cold and then when needed in hot weather the flluid in the lines has expanded making coupling impossible without loosening the coupler and bleeding off the pressure. Does the open type solve that problem?

These specific 1/4" flat faced couplers will not fix your specific issue because they don't have an intergraded pressure release (connect under pressure). I have mentioned to Summit about offering a 1/4" intergraded pressure release (connect under pressure ) flat faced coupler. They were open to ideas and I gave them my idea. They do however offer intergraded pressure release (connect under pressure) on 3/8" and larger couplers. FYI, the intergrade pressure release, to my knowledge is only on the male coupler. I initially looked in the 3/8" size couplers because of the connect under pressure feature. However, due to the size of the couplers, I determined it wasn't going to work very well or potentially at all.

Do you know what the psi is at the aux hydraulics? Thanks

Unfortunately, I don't. Call Ventrac directly and ask. I'm sure they would be willing to answer you question.

Hmm..... I'd try calling your local dealer and ask them. If the dealer doesn't want to saying anything, go to a Facebook page called "I Want A Ventrac One Day" and ask your question. I believe you have to be a member to post anything on the page. I'm curious, why do you want to know the aux pressure? @@LoganTech98
