    I have the 1776 100 proof... the first smell was 'a can of paint' or 'paint thinner' and I thought.. 'wrong bottle!'.. but, leaving it breathe for 10 minutes, the harsh smell is gone and a good rye smell is coming out of the glass... good dram. The first sip is spicy ( maybe Harsh for the faint hearted (that's why they make Dalwhinnie ....)) but when the tastebuds are saturated, the tongue is happy..

    Hey Guys:
    I enjoyed your review because you were able to articulate some notes that I was not. I have the James E. Pepper Kentucky Straight Rye at 50% ABV. I have only started my Rye journey, but James E. Pepper has a lot going for it!!
    Here are my Notes; SLÁINTE Mike
    I enjoyed a glass of James E. Pepper Kentucky Straight Rye on Sunday night. Here are my notes.
    JAMES E. PEPPER Straight Rye Whiskey
    3/1/20
    50% ABV Non-Chill-filtered 90%? Rye 5% Malted Barley 5% Corn? (The Whiskey Jug)
    I am 1/3 of the way into the bottle, so air has mingled with the spirit
    COLOR: Reddish Brown with legs running moderately
    NOSE: A nice pickle brine
    PALATE: Mild Pickle Brine with pepper spice tingling my tongue. There are some unidentifiable sweet notes in the mix and maybe a slight alcohol burn. There are also spearmint notes rising as I let it sit in my mouth
    FINISH: Drying with mild pepper underpinned by a fresh mint note
    With 1 Drop of Spring water
    NOSE: A light Licorice note transitioning to a sweet hard candy note and fresh cut grass in turn
    PALATE: Very light pickle brine with a drying sense and pepper dancing on my tongue There is some fresh cut grass as I swirl it, but very light. The spearmint note is also there.
    FINISH: Drying with light pepper and a mouthwatering sense. There is a mint note in the end.
    With 2 drops of Spring water
    NOSE: a light candy sweetness, hard to describe
    PALATE: Mint freshness which has some sugary sweetness around it, then a drying sense with light pepper, but still a sense of minty freshness
    FINISH: Very Spicy and drying with pepper tingling my throat and tongue. A mouthwatering sense in the end
    I really enjoyed this Rye Whiskey. I am just starting to try rye whiskey so it is new to me. I loved the complexity in this whiskey. I enjoyed the various mint and spearmint notes and was pleasantly surprised with the fresh cut grass note with water. I was also surprised by the licorice note and the sweet hard candy. Strangely, I did not notice mouthfeel here. I am not sure why, because with Bourbon, Irish and Scottish Whiskey I do. Nicely Complex; Highly recommended!!

    Just bought a bottle today for $33. I find it to be quite spicy but not overly "hot" for a young rye, and likely will buy a backup bottle or three. I'm not sure this would work so well at 2 years old if it were chill-filtered.

      When I first tried Redemption Rye (MGP distillate, 92 proof, 2. years old) I thought it tasted great, but needed more proof. Today I found it in this 1776 rye (also MGP distillate).

      Althouth after I read a little further into it, this info you shared was from 2013.Although controversial the Whistle Pig Farm tips it's hat to the Canadians for providing the initial grains, but now it is now running on it's own grains. Rye sustainable.

      They are not yet. The first 10 year rye from their own distillate will not be ready until 2024. WP was introduced in 2010, they became an official distillery in 2014. They say they source from a few places now but the juice you are drinking is still Alberta Distilleries.

    A 92 for a 2 year MGP Rye. Wonder what the 2-3 year Willett Family Estate would rate or say Thomas H Handy at 6 years. I would not hesitate to get this at the price you paid but I am not the biggest fan of young MGP/LDI Rye.

    • @ScotchTestDummies
      @ScotchTestDummies  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Give this one a shot...although some people don't like it at all. Its all up in your face rye

    • @peterwhite507
      @peterwhite507 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am a huge fan of Pikesville 110 and the Maryland Style of Rye. I would love to get my hands on the 2-4 year Willett Family Estate Rye as well. I will be honest, I struggle with Dickel and Bulleit rye's and all young MGP Rye's.
      For the price I would give this a go but sadly this will never be available where I am.
      Your friends at Stillwater distillery (Stalk & Barrel) produce a barrel proof rye at 60.2% aged 3.5 years or more. I would trade one for this but being in Canada that's impossible. That one is not only in your face but will punch your lights out.
      Dillon's Distillery also makes a cask strength rye

    The old Pepper distillery is in Lexington and is now home to a couple of bars, a really good restaurant, an ice cream shop (with all kinds of bourbon treats), and even a small distillery, though I'm not sure if they're producing yet. Definitely recommend if you visit Lex, which you should cause it's awesome.

    I really enjoy this expression and you are right. This is what rye whisky tastes like. I have had the 1776 bourbon by the way and it's pretty good stuff as well. Hell, the 'standard' rye is an impressive 50% ABV. The Barrel Proof is hard to find in the U.K and I have to import it from Germany. I pay more this side of the pond but 1776 is good value in an age of stupid prices for even average bourbon and rye.

    why do you put the coin on top? Seems kind of pointless...If you are worried about the alcohol evaporation ratio well dont worry even with that cap its evaporating and the second you pull the coin cap off those fumes are gone.....I dont know...just seems totally pointless never seen that before....unless you maybe put the coin on top then slightly tilt one side and nose it....THEN yeah it kinda makes sense....but even then when you pour a dram you want it to air out....to open up, so putting a cap on it seems kind of detrimental

    • @ScotchTestDummies
      @ScotchTestDummies  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The coin concentrates the smells coming out of the glass. Not worried about evaporation although if it is late at night I will leave the coin on a glass and go off to bed so I can enjoy more of the same dram the next day. We test the drams we are reviewing prior to filming and often give the bottle months to open up after being opened.

      +Journey, CC 100% Rye is Alberta Premium aged for 2 more years than the standard AP. So a 7 year rye at 80 proof probably will not compare to a 2 year 100 proof rye. Just saying.
