  • The Pepper family brand of whiskey is an iconic Kentucky whiskey brand initially produced during the American Revolution and continued through 1967. The family built and operated two main distilleries: first founding the site that today hosts the Woodford Reserve Distillery, and later the James E. Pepper Distillery in Lexington. In the late 1960s the bourbon industry hit hard times, and both the brand and distillery in Lexington were abandoned for over half a century. It was revitalized in 2017 and now their Bourbon and Rye has been on shelves for only $30 bucks!

I work half a mile from the James E Pepper distillery but never picked up a bottle yet. Been considering the 1776 rye.

Great video as usual! Was expecting a much higher price tag than $30. Might have to grab a bottle of the rye if I come across it.

Just opened my bottle of Rye from last year. Wish I had opened it earlier. Damn good surprise for a bottle that cost me about $30. It's definitely worth it and would buy it again.

1776 cask strength is sooooo good

Considering picking up the cask strength, never tried the 100, but $40 cask strength is usually a good bargain. Plus, the bottle design is cool.

1776 Bourbon is among my go to's for quality and price.
It's less than 25$ in certain areas in America 🇺🇸.

I bought the MGP distilled version of the bourbon last summer and it was pretty good. Now that there is a BBC distilled product, I’ll have to score it too. I love going to the distillery district when I go up to Lex. Have a great Thanksgiving.

This is one of the bottles that turned me on to rye. You found those bottles for $30?? Lucky dog... think I paid close to $40. You're correct about the rye being great in a cocktail... I made several Manhattan variations with it and was deliciously surprised by each one.

Great review as always! I like 95/5 rye. I was playing with numbers in my head before you mentioned that the bourbon was 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malted barley and wondered how a 55% corn, 30% rye, 10% malted barley and 5% wheat would taste in comparison?

A good idea would be to film at an actual local liquor store and pick out what is the best quality for the money of what's available in an everyday liquor store. So many decent bourbons are becoming difficult to find. When I saw the name "what's on the shelf" that's what I thought you'd be doing. Good show though.

I've only had one Pepper expression, Old Pepper Straight Rye Whiskey 4 yr old 107 proof, $31. While I generally love an MGP 95/5 rye, this one did not sit well with me. It had a really weird spice note (cardamon ?) that was very off putting. I guess I need to give them a second chance given the reasonable prices.

  • @lawrencespies8674

Can you do a side by side of 1776 Rye and Tin Cup Rye? "A bold and smooth 90 proof rye whiskey, made of 95% Mid-Western Rye & 5% Barley. TINCUP® Rye is distilled and aged for three years, then cut to proof with pure Rocky Mountain water." I like Tin Cup but sounds like the 1776 may have the edge. Happy Thanksgiving!
