Steve McMichael leased a house right around the corner from my late Mother in Lake Holiday area of Somonauk, Illinois for a year not too long ago. I was fortunate to see him on the property once & talked to him for a bit. I was in awe & he treated me like an old friend. I will always cherish that moment. I wasn't the biggest fan of the fourth Indiana Jones movie. But there is a line in that film that has stuck with me to this day.
Indy is lamenting the loss of his friend Marcus and his dad, and the professor standing behind him said (paraphrase), "You have reached the point where life stops giving and starts taking."
It seems like that, doesn't it? Or at the bare minimum, the longer you live, the more life takes and the less life gives.

@@DaDitka Exactly. What you said reminded me of a scene from the second Creed movie. Rocky's been diagnosed with cancer, Adrianne, Mickey, Apollo, and I think Paulie are now long gone, and he's just tired. Creed is trying to convince him to get treatment but Rocky's basically given up. They're standing in the hallway of the gym and Rocky says, (and I'm paraphrasing), "Most of my life is behind me. It's a memory, just like those old fight posters over there," he points to fight posters from long, long ago. "Everybody I loved is gone."
We have a saying in Spanish which goes, "Sigue palante," Keep moving forward. My father, may he rest in peace, always put that in literal motion. "Movement is life," he'd tell me. Sounds like good advice to me.

My brother has ALS for over 12 years, he's now 74, he's one of the very few that live longer than 3 years, his has been very slow progressing... He was very into hiking, so I asked what's been the hardest part of the desease, and he said losing his ability to speak. He likes to write on an erasable board that he keeps in his lap. He has a wonderful wife, and is able to go places in his wheelchair. He's told me he still enjoys living, being able to still eat and enjoy foods. I’m a lifelong Lions fan but in the mid 80s we routed for the Chicago Bears and love those cast of characters! I was 20 years old when the Bears won the Super Bowl, I remember Dan Hampton Steve McMichael Richard Dent and the boys wreaking havoc on the lions and the rest of the NFL!
Prayers to Steve McMichael, and the fallen 85 bears…

I met Mongo back in the day. Very cool and forthcoming. The one thing that I will always remember about that meeting was shaking his hand. His hand was like a catcher's mitt. Bigger than life. He wasn't pretentious he is down to earth and willing to go the extra mile. That was proven on the football field and at Ditka's restaurant the night I met him. God bless Steve" Mongo " McMichael.

If you live long enough, you reach a point in your life where you'll go to more funerals than weddings and christenings. It's just a fact of life. I'm at that point now. I see my childhood heroes and those I admired, male and female, fall one by one. Mongo McMichael will be one of them, as was Stephen Hawking, and so many others, whether they had this disease or not. It's damn depressing sometimes.

I saw Steve in person one day in 79 in Lake Jackson Tx. He came to pick up Kenneth McCune who lived next door to us and was the Longhorns TE. He drove up in a yellow Triumph TR7 . The man was so big we couldn’t see how he got out of the car. He towered over that small car . I wish I could have gotten a picture of both of them when they got in the car and left . I was only13 at the time and I wish I would have gotten his autograph before he turned pro.
