2:50 I just love the touch that the piano gives to this part. So amazingly well thought out.

Love ATDI. The first 4 tracks on here are just nuts. I agree with you completely on the screaming, it's just right somehow. Looked at some of your other videos and your "top albums of the year" were really interesting, they read like a Pitchfork list from around that time.

Husker Du and meat puppets!!! Hell yeah. I live in the twin cities, and the scene here is still very proud of that band. Du's album Zen Arcade was a very early vision of post hardcore, which Fugazi would solidify a few years later.
I love ATDI and this album. ATDI's brand of post hardcore is most influenced by the "San Diego scene". Bands like Drive Like Jehu (who Cedric explicitly references as the primary influence on this album) and Unbroken. The scene drew influence from noisy bands such as Bastro, Sonic Youth, and The Jesus Lizard.
You'd like Drive Like Jehu. Their second album is a masterpiece of noisey, progressive post hardcore.

I have listened to Drive Like Jehu, though it's been so long my memory has fuzzed out. I still have my autographed copy of Warehouse Songs and Stories from a record store signing.

I used to listen to ATDI before screamo was even a thing yet and very few people understood their appeal

I have to admit to discovering them after Mars Volta.

Where has the spirit of the hardcore/post-hardcore movement gone to in 2023? I’m out of the loop now, but I miss this stuff. Another great band that preceded ATDI by a few years is Cap’n Jazz.

Anthony Fantano's year-end list includes some of this genre. If you're truly interested in what's new, he is knowledgable. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I've listened to a bit. Never an entire album. Most of their music is 90's so I haven't done anything here on the channel which is 21st Century. Thank you.

Hello Gene! Just found your channel, I would like to recommend another great band from Texas called …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, either their song “Totally Natural” or “Perfect Teenhood.” Both are from their Album “Madonna”. I would prefer Studio mixes because their live versions have so many variation. I first heard them around the time I discovered At the Drive-In and they have some of the same intense energy!

    • @wallbangerreactions

Good suggestion Chuck. I'm fairly certain I listened to them many years ago, but I can't remember what they sound like. I've added this to my spreadsheet for a future community poll. If I do a reaction I might jump to the next album Source Tags & Codes. Hope you don't object.

@@wallbangerreactions source Tags and Codes is a great album my favorite song being “How Near How Far.” Madonna is a much more intense album but Source is always considered their best rated.

Along with bands such as Fugazi many people would consider Husker Du a progenitor or pioneer of Post-Hardcore

I also did One-Armed Scissor. Check that out if you haven't. Two songs from the same album is really the max I can do and still "react." Maybe some day down the road I can hit them again. You mentioned Sparta, though. That's a thought.
