+Steve1989 MREinfo id like to see some top 10 worst entrees and top 5 best freeze dried entrees.. That'll be cool! Yeah I'm a bit bummed out. It's too far for me and the time constraints because of my job.. Would be nice to attend one near me in the west coast :)
What makes your videos great is that you're really, really good at describing flavors and textures. Even though you don't look like a hipster foodie and this isn't a foodie subject, you talk about the MREs in a foodie way and it makes the videos so interesting. So much so that I even had a friend buy me a few MREs from out in Afghanistan so I could try them myself. I even watch the ads at the beginning in their entirety out of respect for your great work! Keep it up!
When I was in, my favorite was freeze dried strawberries. They were very rare, and we would fight over them........ I never added water. That crunchy sweet deliciousness.
Same here! Sometimes when we went out on FTX’s back in the day, a lot of the guys would bring their own food because they despised MRE‘s. I’d come back with a duffel bag full of MRE’s. Always loved finding those freeze dried strawberries and the chocolate covered cookies!
You use descriptive language very well. I feel that's a big stumbling block for youtubers who review food. They can't convey the flavors effectively or in depth.
I love all of the Steve1989 staples. Especially when his opinion of how something tastes does a complete unexpected 180. "UGH...THAT'S....hmm...you know what, hey, that's not so--.... yeah, that's terrible."
Man, i can't get enough of your videos man. There is some sort of charm that comes from an MRE, that i just can't get anywhere else, And unfortunately for me, I'm piss poor. And one day, I Found this channel, and I thought that you were just gonna text modern ones, but then i found the 1945 US military WW2 K ration video, and man, I just fell in love. Good job Steve. Very well narrated. Just don't stop making videos.
Wow, talk about bringing back a memory! My dad was Army and later National Guard for 27 years. He used to bring home a bunch of the B-3 cans that his unit would save out to send home to me because they knew I loved them. These were the same men that took me up in a helicopter, racing around Ft. Irwin in a deuce and a half, and my personal favorite, slamming across the desert sticking out the top of a tank while a colonel held me up lol. Those chocolate toffee patties, they were awesome. I just lost my dad two months ago, so seeing that made me tear up, but in a really good way. Thank you for putting this up, it was awesome!
Steve, I love your videos and I have a suggestion: Id like to see a video about MRE "field recipes". Like taking components from different rations and making a better overall meal. Perhaps you can touch on "Ranger Cookies" or the like, taking coffee creamer and sugar then cooking with matches to make a small pastry. Stay awesome dude!
I don't know what it is about your videos but I can't get enough of them. You're narration is very relaxing to listen to and these videos really help me clear my mind after a long day. Please keep it up.
In chronological order: Genesis - Invisible Touch Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska Stanley Clarke - Time Exposure Frank Zappa - Sheik Yerbouti Robert Palmer - Riptide Peter Gabriel - Security Huey Lewis and The News - Sports Peter Gabriel - So
Hey Steve1989, Great video, brought back memories. I remember during my time in the USMC during the 70's how popular the chocolate disks with toffee were, especially when trading your meal with other Marines, they gave you alot of leverage. Thanks again!
Man, I've watched your videos for a while now. You have such a positive attitude. I feel like you'd be such a great and knowledgable person to hang out with!
+MalkinII this is the only video I've seen so far where nearly every pan over to him is a different record. He'll usually change it for every video, but this one he changed almost every item.
good work as always Steve. I always look forward to seeing your videos and love to get a notification to say that you uploaded a new video. keep it up brother.
+Steve1989 MREinfo it would be cool if you did a video about how and where you find your rations especially the really old ones! I'm really curious about that
This is an example of why your videos are the best in this niche genre. A desert top 10 list for MRE's AND a tour of some the best music albums of all freaking time. Who else gives you a creative two for one? ....mmmmm, nobody. Great video as always. 🤘
I found a whole case of the vintage dark mres and threw away like 90% of it thinking i couldnt eat it and im so mad at myself now that i know more about them
Wow! I can remember eating a fair number of the older desserts you describe in the video, but since I was out of the Army in January 1982, obviously I didn't get to try the "newer" ones. One thing about the Chocolate with toffee nuggets, we would melt them and pour the mixture over the top of our canned cinnamon rolls (also heated up) for a truly delicious flavor and tongue pleasing experience. Thanks for the video's, Steve.
More please!!! after seen all your videos i feel like this a nice refresher to your channel. keep up the good work and your channel has become one of my top channels in youtube.
Great stuff (as usual) Steve! Not only a great and entertaining survey of some of your favorite older/discontinued snacks/desserts, but also a little semi-subliminal look at the history of some great music as well! Nice! Oh, and after seeing the Freeze-Dried Fruit all the way up at No.2 I felt a little bit guilty once again about that FD Strawberries pack that was in the 1995 Chili and Macaroni you sent to me. What a rare treat that one was (especially since it wasn't even supposed to be in there--since it was supposedly replaced by thermostabilized fruit that year!
Vietnam Era vet here. Fruitcake....mmmmm. It didn't have the crappy dried green and red pieces in it. Just rich dense full of cinammon and butter and full of raisins and nuts. I'd like to find some of these. Even if you don't like fruitcake, this is an ideal dessert.
This has got to be one of my favorite YT channels.. Im trying to pace myself with his videos as I dont want to burn through all of them and have nothing else to watch haha.
More great work as always Steve! I've finally decided what I want to be my first ration review. Old school chicken ala King, it seems to be like a rite of passage for reviewers. You've endured it, gundog has, kiwidude has, thanks for the inspiration man
i love your videos so much. there's nothing more interesting and entertaining than hearing a smart and positive guy talk about something he's passionate about. keep on truckin'
Did any of you notice he keeps changing the picture to the left of him. (from his perspective) Also i just love this guy, what a dude "i'm going to save these for later"
Dude i get so stoked about your video's man, good job! I'm always impressed by the way you describe the different flavors and textures of the different food items and your ability to remember all the different types of rations and their manufacture dates :) Good job man, keep it up!
Awesome video, love the top 10 idea. Its cool that you didn't just remix with clips of previous episodes, but instead opened whole new items just for this video.
Hey I enjoyed the background picture changes. My favs were the pound cakes and peaches and apricots from the MCIs when we ate those in. The early eighties. When MREs started we still try to hunt down the MCIs. Even to the point of private purchase at the local Army-Navy stores. We'd get them for $ 2-3 each. Gosh I miss them.
Hey bro, Just wanted to thank you for all these uploads. I found your videos about a month ago and always treat myself to a video a day. If you've never heard of ASMR you have a vey triggering style of video. It doesn't necessarily give me the ASMR tingles, but it's really relaxing and informative. I compare these to like a food network/history channel show. It's like how it's made but in a simpler form. Thanks for all your work man, it's a simple concept you do so well. Keep up the good work, and if I come across anything cool (my dad is retired Air Force) I'll send it your way for a review! Have a good one brother!
Well I caught Genesis, Bruce Springsteen, Stanley Clarke, Frank Zappa, Robert Palmer (I think), Peter Gabriel and Huey Lewis albums...but not sure who the last guy is. That last guy could be Peter Gabriel as well.
+joe strummer I had no idea who any of the people were! I was trying to decipher whether or not he shot this top 10 in a series of days or otherwise. I like that he changes things up. Kinda like a fun little mini game to see if we can notice small changes in detail :)
I love these vintage MRE reviews. Seeing the freeze dried mixed fruit bar remindes me of when my dad would bring home MREs from his Army Reserve Unit for our fishing trips. Finding the mixed fruit bar was the cause of a few fights between my sister and I over who got the pouch. I had a chuckle seeing the Apple Pie Pop Tart included.
love the videos +Steve1989 MREinfo. the best is when you lay it on the tray and "Nice". I've become obsessed with MRE and all sorts of rations thanks to you. keep it up and thank you. cheers.
those drink mixed look like when I use a jelly/jello pkt and add some hot water to it and drink. [it calms down my acid reflux quicker than anything else]
Am I the only one who notices that when he pans out he changes the picture to his right lmao. Steve is my ultimate hero, I literally come and watch these video's to help with my hunger issues. You literally make my night every night buddy, keep up the outstanding work!.
Big Gamer86 Me? no, It's not something I ever plan on doing nor have I ever done however watching him smoke these old cigs and describe them is very fascinating.
this was really cool definitely looking forward to other top tens especially top ten worst meals. also we appreciate the work you put into the background and everything else for that matter.
actually the real answer is because they do it to rebalance the dietary requirements and vary the menus, unfortunately that means some classics have to make way for modern replacements
During Desert Storm the military checked trash cans and noted what we did not eat. Got rid of a few truly horrible ones (dehydrated pork Pattie for one) but the dreaded Omelet with Ham lived on.
and then they decided that the eggs were fine and it must have been the meat that people didn't like in the omelette so replaced the meat with veges... and we all know how that turned out
I love your Videos! you give so much detail that it makes me feel like I'm holding and tasting a piece of Ration History! Also I totally agree with the pound cake! those are my favorites! my dad used to collect them because he said they were the only good thing in the MRE. So we have a bag full. Thanks for your time to makes these!
+Steve1989 MREinfo. I was wondering if there are any companies that make replica MREs from the old wars. Im sure the recipes have not disappeared and could be remade.
I loved the fig bar, but lately my favorite is the almond poppy poundcake. I actually found a chocolate covered oatmeal cookie in a civilian Sopakco meal , but it was just the one out of a whole case. It was really, really good , i kinda wish i had saved the wrapper now.
Yeah sure I don't really broadcast. I just remember some girl on TH-cam saying that she signed up with an advertising network and it was a bad experience because you are locked into a long contract with them. So if they do a crappy job of promoting you, you can't really do much about it until the contract is up. But Steve might have a different experience.
Great video. It's cool to see you trying out a focused, categorical list instead of ration sets. Very interesting take on your videos! Keep up the good work!

Nice taste in...everything. I have a feeling Steve and I would be good friends.
He makes the music
Now let's set it out on a tray. Nice! Delicious vinyl! 🎵
Nicely done 👍
Where is Stomu Yamashta's "GO"?
Great concept, Steve. Can't wait to see more, including your "Bottom 10s!" Oh, and I enjoyed the visual chicanery, too.
Nah, Top 10s are cliche. Top 10 Worst is an oxymoron. But balance a Top 10 with a Bottom 10? That's intriguing.
+Steve1989 MREinfo I appreciate your taste in music. Nice vinyl collection.
I've been eating MRE's since 1984, when I was six years old, and I have to agree
I vote for worst 10 list as well.
I have a feeling that cheese spreads are gonna be included in that future list
Holy shit. I didn’t even know I had tickets to the gun show.
Subliminal album switches in background.
I noticed that too haha
Lmao last one i notice was Gabriel the last video or so ago ,
Good 70s-80's musical selection. Nice
Lol that was a healthy dose if snacks, that's for sure! Awesome new series, can't wait to see what else you have up your sleeve. Keep it up brotha!

My favorite part of every video I would buy a shirt of that
Riiight?! Cracks me up every time he says it!

"UGH...THAT'S....hmm...you know what, hey, that's not so--.... yeah, that's terrible."

And at the end of every video. "All right, cool, see ya"
I'd love to hang out with him, dude is legit.

Great compilation.. would love to see more like this. Nice touch changing they Albums in the background. Clever addition.
I really enjoyed this format! Great angle on some really unusual items. Great work sir! As usual, your vinyl game is strong.
what kind of supplements do yo take? " 50 year old MREs

I don't know what it is about your videos but I can't get enough of them. You're narration is very relaxing to listen to and these videos really help me clear my mind after a long day. Please keep it up.
anyone notice the different records in the background on each number lol. genesis invisible touch and Robert palmer. good taste in music
Yeah! Also Springsteen and Zappa :-)
+vincentvega53 y'all are forgetting Peter Gabriel!
Thank you I was just getting ready to ask who the one at 6:36 was. I knew I had seen it but couldn't remember who it was.

Took me forever to notice he kept changing the record/picture on the right lol
Yeah I finally noticed it when it was the Zappa album
I noticed it tight away. Kept thinking if he wanted us to have a special message or something 😂
i noticed wen the arab showed up
+Stine Kirkeby It definitley shows a diverse taste in music. And he owns a record player. And he's into set design.
This is the only comment i was looking for lol
Man, I've watched your videos for a while now. You have such a positive attitude. I feel like you'd be such a great and knowledgable person to hang out with!
Showing off your vinyl collection, I see.
You gotta get a Tom Waits vinyl up there.
Wow, I didn't even notice he was changing them!
He´s been doing it in all videos.. nice touch
+MalkinII this is the only video I've seen so far where nearly every pan over to him is a different record. He'll usually change it for every video, but this one he changed almost every item.
This video is just an excuse for him to not only show his cool back to the future muscle shirt and muscles, but also his nice collection of vinyls.
That Frank Zappa picture studying you as you eat is the best!
I don't know what it is but, I have a satisfying experience watching you eat MRE's
I like that you keep changing vinyls with every new dessert lol great video as always!
good work as always Steve. I always look forward to seeing your videos and love to get a notification to say that you uploaded a new video. keep it up brother.
ps.... all this vintage food is turning you into a beast 💪💪💪
I never thought I'd be subscribing to a guy who eats old MRE's. But I've really enjoyed your videos. Thanks for posting.
Am I the only one dying for a new video? Where have you been Steve?

Love your videos Steve. We all get together in the break room at work and watch these during our breaks. Thanks for sharing!
I've watched this video 3 times and I just now realized the changing album cover in the background. 😆
Cookie bar was fantastic - had one in a surplus store mre as a kid
THE RATION GOD RETURNS
i love your videos so much. there's nothing more interesting and entertaining than hearing a smart and positive guy talk about something he's passionate about. keep on truckin'
honest question, steve. how much of your diet is eating rations? nice back to the future shirt btw
As always I greatly enjoy your reviews. A great glimpse at both history and the longevity of different products.
Anyone else see the photos on right whenever it cut to him eating change every time?
those are album covers
and now you can go through every video he's done and see that it has always changed every Time it cuts to him
Steve, excellent new segment and really good choices both in content and enumeration.
Nice video sir
+Steve1989 MREinfo :)
Nice!
Did any of you notice he keeps changing the picture to the left of him. (from his perspective) Also i just love this guy, what a dude "i'm going to save these for later"
+Tommy Bahama that's the first thing I noticed. after the awesome back to the future shirt.
What a great idea for a topic, awesome Steve! It brings back a lot of great memories of some of the old deserts.
Came for the music.... wasn't disappointed
LOL, I just now noticed that the albums kept changing in the background. Awesome.
Frank Zappa was eyeballing that fruit bar pretty hard
+Justin It's the soothing sounds of 70's-80's zombie movie intro's sped up lmao
Dude i get so stoked about your video's man, good job! I'm always impressed by the way you describe the different flavors and textures of the different food items and your ability to remember all the different types of rations and their manufacture dates :) Good job man, keep it up!
Good lord, steve. You have a permit for those guns? ;)
Awesome video, love the top 10 idea. Its cool that you didn't just remix with clips of previous episodes, but instead opened whole new items just for this video.
The freeze dried peaches were always my favorite.
James Tate the tiny vanilla fudge bar was awesome, too
Hey I enjoyed the background picture changes. My favs were the pound cakes and peaches and apricots from the MCIs when we ate those in. The early eighties. Really enjoyed this one but I gotta say, watching a top 10 worst... that's going to be interesting haha.
If you do a top 10 worst entrees, I have a vegetable lasagna with your name on it lol. Its soooo bad
Hey bro,
Just wanted to thank you for all these uploads. Have a good one brother!
Steve some of these discontinued items; are there any modern commercially available approximations?
I like how you changed the record in the background each time. Love your videos!!
Lets hope that the military sees this and starts making these again. xD
You should do a Top 10 Foreign MRE's or a Top 10 Currently Issued MRE's.
Awesome video!
Is the Duncan's rum and raisin chocolate still your favourite?
Can't wait, makes me proud to be British :P
Dude your descriptions of the food as you eat them are so well done it's like I can taste it.. you're videos are epic, keep up the awesome work.
so many different portraits and pictures appeared in the backdrop. was that purposeful?
+Steve1989 MREinfo nice.
Well I caught Genesis, Bruce Springsteen, Stanley Clarke, Frank Zappa, Robert Palmer (I think), Peter Gabriel and Huey Lewis albums...but not sure who the last guy is. That last guy could be Peter Gabriel as well.
I thought I was the only one that noticed this as well.
+joe strummer I had no idea who any of the people were! I was trying to decipher whether or not he shot this top 10 in a series of days or otherwise. I like that he changes things up. Kinda like a fun little mini game to see if we can notice small changes in detail :)
+joe strummer yeah, last guy was Peter Gabriel.

4:27 Oh my god, Sheik Yerbouti in the corner there! I knew you liked Frank Zappa.
Steve - you are my favourite discontinued pound cake reviewer on TH-cam. Keep on keepin on brother
A new segment? *faints*
alright

+YoungClickClack nice!
love the videos +Steve1989 MREinfo. the best is when you lay it on the tray and "Nice". I've become obsessed with MRE and all sorts of rations thanks to you. keep it up and thank you. cheers.
those drink mixed look like when I use a jelly/jello pkt and add some hot water to it and drink. [it calms down my acid reflux quicker than anything else]
These videos are great, so entertaining to watch. Description is spot on!
How did you get into MREs?
Some of them just pull apart at the seam, others you need to cut or tear it open.
@@willyjimmy8881 HHHHHHHAAAAAAAA. 3 years later
Am I the only one who notices that when he pans out he changes the picture to his right lmao. Steve is my ultimate hero, I literally come and watch these video's to help with my hunger issues. You literally make my night every night buddy, keep up the outstanding work!.
perhaps a Top 5/10 Best MRE Cigarettes? (obviously not all 5/10 cigarettes in one sitting, that would be mental)
I'm pretty sure The cigarettes all are basically the same.
A Piece Of Bread You would be surprised :P
Do you actually smoke?
Big Gamer86 Me? no, It's not something I ever plan on doing nor have I ever done however watching him smoke these old cigs and describe them is very fascinating.
"obvioudly not all 5/10 cigarettes in one sitting"
why not, he doesnt have to smoke the whole cigarette
this was really cool definitely looking forward to other top tens especially top ten worst meals. also we appreciate the work you put into the background and everything else for that matter.
What are some reasons that these products got discontinued in MRE's? Was it to cut costs, health risks, or something else?
yes
actually the real answer is because they do it to rebalance the dietary requirements and vary the menus, unfortunately that means some classics have to make way for modern replacements
During Desert Storm the military checked trash cans and noted what we did not eat. Got rid of a few truly horrible ones (dehydrated pork Pattie for one) but the dreaded Omelet with Ham lived on.

I'd like to see a ww1 mre
Thanks I appreciate it. Your channel has gotten me into MRE's and it surprised me how interesting they can be.
That's definitely something to look forward to!
+Steve1989 MREinfo. I was wondering if there are any companies that make replica MREs from the old wars. Im sure the recipes have not disappeared and could be remade.
+Steve1989 MREinfo if you find one do it on the release of Battlefield 1 as a special! (Bf1 is set in the ww1 time period)
I found this channel like 4 weeks ago and I freaking love it. Great job =D
Those fruit pastries look a lot like poptarts.
A Tricky Carnie that’s exactly what I thought lol, man now I want a pop tart.
Steve, I never get tired of your videos, keep rockin bro.
You said pears instead of peaches, probably why it tasted different. Also why does your photograph in the background keep changing?
it's probably just a cheeky Easter egg, they're album covers
I loved the fig bar, but lately my favorite is the almond poppy poundcake. I actually found a chocolate covered oatmeal cookie in a civilian Sopakco meal , but it was just the one out of a whole case. It was really, really good , i kinda wish i had saved the wrapper now.

I absolutely love your videos. they are so fun to watch, and they are also quite informative in my opinion.
steve, why have you not signed up for a network? you could be making money off these videos!
I've heard some broadcasters say you are better off going it on your own.
Kamakzie1976 do you still make money?
Yeah sure I don't really broadcast. I just remember some girl on TH-cam saying that she signed up with an advertising network and it was a bad experience because you are locked into a long contract with them. So if they do a crappy job of promoting you, you can't really do much about it until the contract is up. But Steve might have a different experience.
Kamakzie1976 no, i was asking if you get paid without a network
Yeah I believe they do with AdSense
Steve, I very much appreciate your knowledge and enthusiasm for MREs.
is it just me or is the album constantly changing?
Great video. It's cool to see you trying out a focused, categorical list instead of ration sets. Very interesting take on your videos! Keep up the good work!
