Howdy, folks! This time we got a Pork & Rice W/ BBQ Sauce MRE from 1993 that has been frozen for the last 15 years (Actually just talked to Jerry, the dude I got 'em from and he told me up to 20 years) and this experiment was a 100% success! This thing looks and tastes like it was made last year! Even the applesauce was in perfect shape! Absolutely amazing MRE review for that reason alone and totally worth watching, you won't be disappointed.
Hope you enjoy the review and stay tuned, I have 5 more just like this one where they were frozen for at least 15 years! Stay tuned! :-)

Mom would bring home crates of these in the 90's at the marine base we lived. I probably ate a pallet of them and made hundreds of marine cookies with the creamer and match books and had a few cheese ball barrels full of hundreds of spoons and condiment packs. I'd just open the things for cocoa and coffee because they were my favorite. I probably had more MRE meals then regular home made meals that decade and I never gained weight. Ahhh good times good times.

It actually makes sense that the FRH still works if it was frozen for all that time. FRHs work by rapid oxidation of magnesium and iron in a saltwater solution, essentially turning it into a bunch of tiny batteries that are all short circuiting and releasing all the chemical energy as heat. They lose potency to ambient oxygen reacting slowly with the metals over time, which is why you can sometimes revive them by adding extra salt - you're increasing the electrolyte content in the solution, which makes the reaction more vigorous, but it won't increase the total chemical energy.
In this case, keeping them frozen slows down the oxidation reaction of the dry components, so there's a lot more of the reactants left when you add water.

Back in 2011 when Superstorm Sandy hit the east coast, FEMA handed out rations to many of the people displaced in Far Rockaway, NY. One of my coworkers at the time managed to get a box and brought it into the office to share with all of us. That's almost the same flameless heating package they had in those MREs.

As a Canadian and espescially as a french Canadian, I have a problem with your usage of the word "entrée". An "entrée" is a small dish to start a four course ( or more ) meal. Why do you insist on calling the main dish an "entrée", while it is not? It is the main dish! Not to complicated to understand, I hope? "le plat de résistance" if you want to get frenchie and fancy about it. :) Just to poke you in the chops a little bit. Love your MRE reports. Keep-up the good work!

the u.s. is funny. we call the small course before the meal an "appetizer" and the main course is an entrée - even at bougie spots. bizarre

Ate these in Somalia. Tuna and noodles was my fave - with Tabasco and peanut butter. Weird I guess. This was a good one too. They also gave us bread rolls (biscuits?) in vac sealed packs from 1967. They were fine. Reminded me of KFC buns.
