Just so you know @28:00 ghost moves in Gen 3 are all physical. Shadow Ball dropping Sp.Def instead of Defense makes it the only move in Pokemon that has ever dropped the opposite defensive stat from the damage type it does.

For the reduced accuracy at 25:43... Stat changes in pokemon are handles by multiplying a given 'stage multiplier' to the base value of the pokemon depending on the status. For example, if a pokemon were to use defense curl, increasing their defense by 1 stage, their defense would change to their original defense, multiplied by the given stage multiplier for +1 (stat) for the pokemon - In gen III, this value is 3/2. This same system also applies to accuracy, as well as evasion, albeit with different numbers to keep everything (relatively) balanced. Now, one would think that the stage multipliers of accuracy and evasion are multiplied to the attack's final accuracy independently of each other, as, well, that would be the sensible thing to do. In Gen I-II, this is, in fact, the case. But from Gen III onward, Game Freak decided to start handling things a little differently... In order to compute accuracy and evasion in these games, the evasion stage is actually subtracted from the accuracy stage number before any calculations occur. In your case, after being sand-attacked 6 times by the Mightyena, the Shiftry used Double-Team once, altering his Evasion to +1. Now, this is where the game begins to calculate in your favor. The game wants to subtract the (+1) evasion from the (-6) accuracy to compute the accuracy of your move at a theoretical stage of (-7). But, because stats cannot go outside of the range of ±6, the game just leaves your accuracy modifier where it is. Double-team, and any other evasive move used by an enemy for the duration of the battle, is now completely ineffective against WobobaFett. In gen III, the stage multiplier for -6 accuracy is merely 1/3. With 100% accuracy on counter/mirror coat, even at -6 accuracy and however many double teams, you will still hit 33% of the time. While the accuracy on that is not great, to say the least, it still isn't necessarily awful. At least, it's better than the chances of the crit chain for the Magikarp video :p
Or just use the Rare Candies on the Zigzagoon rather than just throwing them away. Using items on them outside of battle wasn't against the rules... right?
@@sir.hopper The one we see him throwing away is to make space for the leftovers he needed (at that point his Zigzagoon his already level 81 so additional levels are useless)
@@KingOfDarknessAndEvil His Wobuffet was already level 100 and his Zigzagoon didn't need any additional levels, so from that point on, they were useless
13:39 It also doesn't help your cause that bite is a special attack in Gen-3; mirror coat is your answer to special moves; but mirror coat is a psychic type move which dark types like Mightyena are immune to!! Kinda impressed that you didn't struggle (pun intended) more with the plethora of dark types in that game (Cacturne; Crawdaunt; Absol; Sharpedo; etc.)!!
Ok hear me out, Imagine you're a gym-leader/ elite 4 trainer and this challenger comes to you. The battle starts, the trainer sends his Pokémon out, takes out one of those beach chairs, sunglasses, lies back and starts reading a book. Shocked and agitated, you send out your strongest Pokemons just to watch a freak of nature simply struggle and end your whole career. No trainer intervention, no items, nothing. An hour later, you see your last Pokémon faint, the player folds up his beach chair, takes a long stretch ( he fell asleep) and takes your gym badge, patting your head on the way out. I'd take a vacation to Aloha and become one of those bartenders if that happened to me.
pretty sure Shedinja is impossible scenes you would need to one shot the pokemon that have type advantage against you. Probably possible with X items tho.
@@stephendid I think one-Pokemon runs are more interesting, especially if it's such a gimmicky one like Shedinja. If he has Ninjask, that would make it too easy.
Just watched this and I know I'm almost a year late: Shadow ball lowering special defense didn't affect the fight against Phoebe at all. In emerald, Ghost type attacks do physical damage. thats why Banette hit you really hard, because it has a high physical attack stat.
I am two years late and wow, I completely didn't realize that Shadow Ball had a fucking worthless side effect in the first 3 gens. Well, not exactly worthless, but the points stands. It doesn't help the type at all.
@@Pulstar232Well they only swapped the issue with the physical/special split, because they left Crunch's sp def drop instead of making it physical defense.
@@jasonkeith2832no, after the physical/special split they made it drop defense. Prior to Gen 4 it dropped special defense, but from Gen 4 on it dropped defense.
@@NWOBestFriends yes, but he thought using struggle was easier to win. If he used ether, he'd had wait few turns to use struggle. So, it'd be a waste to use ether every time to use safeguard once or twice...
@@NWOBestFriends It wouldn't work anyways. He restores 5-10 pp. Now he's fighting with safe guard and can't attack. He would need to restore counter and mirror coat as well.
@@justinimel6151 Oorr he could just used a PP restore move in only Safeguard, use it until the PP was over and use struggle, in the case that Safeguard ended in Tentacruel fight, he could restoure both Mirror coat and Safeguard, and start using safeguard and mirror coat for giving Wailord damage, even if it's little
28:02 “Next is dusclops, and I realize how few ghost Pokémon the game must have.” To be fair, Generation 3 introduced more ghosts than the first two generations combined. The developers were just too cowardly to give her a shedinja.
21:53... You absolute madman. You absolute madman! I thought the Magikarp run was insane, and you managed to top yourself. I salute you, sir. Your fortitude and perseverance are the stuff of either legend or Lovecraft, and I'm not sure which.
25:00 You were able to hit that many times, because the minimal hit chance by accuracy is one third (circa one hit out of three attacks). You had that hit chance after six sand attacks. Funny thing: after that his double teams had no effect since your pokemon's accuracy and the opponent's evasion are combined together to calculate the hit chance. For this, the levels of accuracy and evasion are substracted to calculate the overall level of accuracy. That is -6 - 1 = -7 for six sand attacks and one double team. Since that value is smaller than -6, it gets set to -6. -6 is the lowest possible hit value setting your hit chance to a third. So: After six sand attacks your hit chance was 1/3 (accuracy level of -6). After the first double team, it was 1/3 since that's the absolute minimum it could get (accuracy level of -6 and evasion level of 1: overall level of -7 and used level -6). After the secound double team, it was 1/3 since that's the absolute minimum it could get (accuracy level of -6 and evasion level of 2: overall level of -8 and used level -6). After the third double team, it was 1/3 since that's the absolute minimum it could get (accuracy level of -6 and evasion level of 3: overall level of -9 and used level -6). All those double teams were free rounds that changed nothing.
I bet it actually did an integer underflow, where when it did -6-1 it wrapped around to the max value, and then all the double teams brought it back down by three.
You have been fighting for 8 years to grow? Way to preserve. That dedication is why I just subbed. Also, the videos are cool too. PS I like the twitter plug jokes. They're funny.
Shiny clause #1 rule in nuzlockes so good job glad you caught it especially in gen 3 since it has shiny frames which make encountering a shiny much harder

Wobbuffet: *Exists* Taunt: *I'm about to end this man's whole career* Edit:Yes i just found out that both counter And mirror coat cannot be affected by taunt, but still, there are other ways to exploit Wobbuffet's strategy
Hime counter and mirror coat (and metal burst) are physical/special which means they are attacking moves, and unaffected by taunt if you were to use taunt on an opponent, then attack them, their counter move would still go through if it was of the corresponding physical/special type, unless it was metal burst, in which case any attacking move would work, although metal burst is physical sorry dude
Ahhh it would have been nice to see you try and use safegaurd to stop toxic, I feel like there were a few more options than you thought for the champion, but hey you tried your best! Thanks for the video!
accuracy-related buffs max out at six stages, regardless of whether that means evasion is raised, or accuracy is lowered. once you take 6 sand-attacks, that's it. double team doesn't do shiftry any favors. edit: ev training with the macho brace mightve saved you a lot of effort on this run (ironically). you couldve gotten up to +64 on the attack stat if you played your cards right and ground out attack evs. edit edit: with a beneficial nature, you couldve had 181 attack...

Funny thing with phoebe. Shadow ball lowered special defense. In gen 3 ghost type moves were all physical. This means that the only move doing more damage to you in that battle was ice beam.
@@jaerod1987 gen 2 added a split between special attack and special defense. In gen 4 they made it to where there were physical and special versions of each move. For example before gen 2 alakazam had a very high special defense, since both special atk and def were decided by 1 stat. In gen 4 they made physical and special moves for each type.

You were ok at the Phoebe fight because of the physical/special split not existing in gen 3, so all ghost moves were physical. Even though shadow ball was lowering your special defense, shadow ball wouldn't do anymore damage.

Have you seen Wobbuffet in the anime? He's overpowered.
25:00
You were able to hit that many times, because the minimal hit chance by accuracy is one third (circa one hit out of three attacks).
So:
After six sand attacks your hit chance was 1/3 (accuracy level of -6).
Quick maths
I bet it actually did an integer underflow, where when it did -6-1 it wrapped around to the max value, and then all the double teams brought it back down by three.
He also was using struggle, struggle has infinite accuracy, it cannot miss
@@ToxicShatterstar But his struggle did miss, a lot.

GreeneBeau's Paradise Battles were fucking wild before the physical special split.
The Special split was in Gen II wasn’t it? Wasn’t the shift in gen IV to making moves physical/special based on the move itself rather than the type?
Mighty Rodofjars Yes, I was thinking of the wrong name.
@@jaerod1987 gen 2 added a split between special attack and special defense. In gen 4 they made it to where there were physical and special versions of each move.
