    I agree here. The first half I did and do enjoy, but felt like the chorus and 2nd half of the song was absolutely legendary, and I hope it carries this track to new heights for Alter Bridge, because I am blown away. I can't stop hitting repeat!

    I had listened to the song prior to watching your video (in my car on the way home from work). I swear to God I almost had to pull over when the 2nd half of the song started playing. So watching your reaction to the first half change just like mine did was so telling of this song. It's one that grows on you for sure. I've listened to it 10 times now. HELL, I paused your video and went and listened to it again before I came back to finish watching you. It fucking hits strong!

    Appreciate how candid you are in your review. I can't say that the mix ever really bothered me but I don't really know anything about music production..perhaps my listening set-up is just not high quality enough for it to make a difference! I've always loved Myle's vocals. I think you're right and that there have been shades of SMKC in certain vocal lines but frankly, I don't care too much, I would listen to Myles sing a chinese takeaway menu.
    I am fortunate to have loved every album they put out with the exception of Walk the Sky and that was purely because it wasn't musically or lyrically dark enough for my personal tastes. I did love Dying Light though. Enjoyed this single a lot, particularly the heavy breakdown and the heavier 2nd half so I'm really looking forward to the album release.

    First of all, I don’t get the negative feedback on the production. I can hear every instrument just fine. It’s just my opinion but I believe a lot of people have really gotten lost in the amazing creativity the band has in changing as time goes. I don’t think they are trying to impress anyone or attract anyone or sale anyone on their artistic genius. You can put them up against any rock or rock alternative band and they can easily hold their own with changing things up musically. They always bring something new and different and aggressive and it ALL seems to just turn out fantastic. Ok rant over 🤘🏻

    I had chills just by the fact that everything you said, from Fortress being the last strong album to Myles style changing at times since working with Slash, was spot on with my thoughts! At first listen, I wasn't too crazy for this song. Since watching your reaction, I've probably heard the song a half dozen times, and can say that it's actually grown on me. The first half is still nothing good to 'write home about', but I find solace that the song at parts gives me vibes of Fortress.

    AB always had pretty lengthy songs overall. Even Fortress had plenty of 5 to 7 almost 8 min songs. Walk the sky was quite shorter compared with their previous albums. Honestly i really enjoy their longer format more. Some of their best songs are usually near 5 min mark

  • @neighbourhoodmusician
    @neighbourhoodmusician 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It just needs a better main riff to really lift it. The chorus could be slightly more catchy too. Otherwise, a great song. I've been an Alter Bridge fan since 2004 (Saw them multiple times on the ODR tours) and followed them religiously until after Fortress. The Last Hero and Walk the Sky are still good but they seem to be searching for a direction. This might just be it! I think your journey with Alter Bridge mirrors a lot of early fan's experiences, it certainly does mine.

    I feel like I've heard this song before. Sounds like it's straight out of The Last Hero. Luckily I've felt less than great about the last three or four albums' first singles and came to enjoy the albums well enough. If this is the same then I'll be happy, it is still a pretty high floor at worst.

    You know I’m an equally massive AB fan and I think this is a pretty fair review. Your reaction reminds me of your review of the last Maiden record. Bands become our favorites because they are so good, which then makes it hard for them to always measure up. This is a pretty complex and wandering song and I’ll bet time and familiarity and context will help it grow. It’s got a lot of potential. In the end, it’s AB and while it’s not initially one of my favorites of theirs, it’s still better than most of the music is out there.
    As for the production, the band has consistently said the albums sound the way they want. I agree they’ve gotten too compressed and muddy, but I’m afraid that’s not on Elvis.

  • @scotch7731

    I think his change in pronunciation was not an influence kinda thing, but instead that he was touring so much during his time with slash that he had to start preserving his voice. The changes you hear I think are all intentional and are such so he doesn't damage his voice or wear it any further than he has already.

    You are bang on the buck about Myles watering down his voice, since he started working with Slash. Initially I used to think it was a coping mechanism to keep his vocal chords in place, against the high pitches he was hitting, but it's a shame that he has to do that on studio records too. And yes, Elvis got to leave.

    I 'm a huge, mega AB fan just like you and unfortunately I have to agree with some of your criticisms.
    That Fortress album was PHENOMENAL and nothing else in their catalog comes close. And I can't put my finger on exactly what it is but something has definitely been "off" about Alter Bridge since that album and, like you, I think the Slash stuff has affected Myles' singing. I say that as someone who's NOT a fan of the Slash stuff though so there's some bias in that opinion. They DID get me back a little with "Walk The Sky"...Even then I don't like it as much as Fortress but I would actually call WTS their second best album.
    I will say...MAYBE the issue is with US; The fans. As you said, our expectations are SO high after those first four albums that maybe we're at a point where expectations CANNOT be met no matter what the band does.
    This song has already been a grower on me; I've listened to it about a half-dozen times today already and if the rest of the album has the same vibes as when it kicks into 2nd gear at 14:25 ...I think we'll all be satisfied!

    • @Harrysound
      @Harrysound 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe myles and mark have just gone in different directions. I think myles guitar contributions have really changed alter bridge with the jazzy chords but those bits are somewhat interesting. I think his vocal creativity has perhaps left the band and it feels like mark is no longer really lead songwriter but just “‘guitar player”

      @@kiwidan2271 same here. The Last Hero was pretty incredible and has some of their strongest songs on it for me. I think people are down on the production of late which isn't something I'm knowledgeable about but but i will say that it's never stopped me enjoying the hell out of the songs on that album. I wasn't such a fan of WTS, purely because it lacked the darkness I love in their music. Dying Light is the exception there as that was an absolute banger.

    I am 100% on the same page as you. Maybe they've become victims of their own expectations.... but I was hoping this first release would blow me away, and it hasn't. I feel like they've gone more towards being progressive. I miss some of those 4 minute bangers, like My Champion. And I agree, it's time for a new outside producer. I'm tired of the Myles overdubs and mirrored vocals. And specifically, this melody is so sing-songy and droning. They just haven't written as many hooks on their last couple albums. Maybe a new outside voice would help give them a spark.
    That all being said, maybe some added context is needed. Even though this is the title track, it's the album closer. In that sense we could later look back and think it's an epic and appropriate way to end the record. Only 10 songs on the whole thing, a little short for them, but I'm hopeful that what's to come will blow me away. Thank you for doing these reactions!

    Loved the early albums, but phew, since then it’s too much for me. Overproduced, less melodies that stick. All songs have excellent parts, but then something else comes that does not fit with the rest of the song. As if it was constructed and 50 ideas all needed to find their way into one song. Too much for me. Surely something for die hard fans, but hmm, not for me.
