      In first person shooters and some other games that are fast paced require 60+ fps, when being competitive, more than 60. In a video, does not matter. The output is clear anyways.

    instead of making 4k consoles that runs like shit(30FPS) They should make consoles that can run ultra 1080p @ 60fps.

    • @aguspoire6707
      @aguspoire6707 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Lol consoles can't render games in true 4k, they just upscale the frames. Also, games sometimes run at 720p.

      Me who cares 300$(console)>1000$(@60fps) anytime

    • @cooperm3605
      @cooperm3605 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the way the ps4 pro is made is upscaled 1080p to 4k at 30 fps. Only playstation titles are confirmed for upscaled 4k 30 fps. So all 1080p games will most likely run between 50-60 fps. Same with the Xbox scorpio however, the scorpio runs native 4k (real 4k) and will run from 30-40 fps, and all 1080p games will then be processed to (like the pro) 50-60 fps.

    One thing I hate for FPS in some games is when you turn off Vsync but the game feels worse without it somehow, and your PC uses up more RAM, CPU, and GPU.

    • @braveo
      @braveo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Or when the FPS counter says it's 60 but it feels like 40.

    • @All-the-wonderful-stars
      @All-the-wonderful-stars 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Braveo capt here. arguably the most important part of fps is not the average but rather the frame timings. when you disable vsync 2 things generally happen 1) frame rate and frame timings can vary drastically causing the "its over 60 but feels like 30" effect and 2) the game running at a faster fps means it uses more resources and it not limited by the vsync governor.

    • @DatGrunt
      @DatGrunt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      To me vsync adds a lot of input lag. And sometimes my FPS takes a hit in places it wouldn't if it was turned off. Downside is screen tearing but I just bought a 144hz monitor. My FPS in games like GTA 5 is usually around 90 and higher in some other games so it's fine :)

    • @Levdrekinn
      @Levdrekinn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    • @tiagosobral6790
      @tiagosobral6790 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The only problem that i have with Vsync is when it goes from solid 60 frames to 59, it feels like its slowmo 10 fps.

      +Tommy Robinson are you on 60hz or 120/144hz? it happens when your framerate is higher than your monitor's refresh rate. freesync really helps with that - it's a game-changer if you are on 144hz and can't get 144fps in all games. even 80fps seems smooth like that.

    • @HaohmaruHL
      @HaohmaruHL 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      five seven G movies have motion blur due to how cameras work so it's not that bad. Just take a panning camera scene from any movie and it turns into a smudge until the camera stops. If it was recorded with 60 fps you would have seen every detail in the screen during panning. It's especially important for movies in 3d.

    • @Antiganos
      @Antiganos 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Haohmaru HL That's going to depend on shutter speed, aka how much light is let in for each frame. 120 shutter speed at 24 frames will look choppy and have little blur, (Saving Private Ryan intro) but 58 at 24 will look very close to human eye specs etc.

    People adapt to higher quality. It's simple as that. Back in the day, 30 fps was acceptable...then again...so was 360p acceptable just a couple years ago.Then you start watching 720p, and you then 360p is no longer acceptable.
    I an a cheap ass, so I intentionally stay behind the curve on graphics options so that I not only get the most performance possible, but also have that performance come at a cheap cost (ie the hardware for my computer), and it looks good *enough* for me.

      Also let me point out that although the difference between 60Hz and 100Hz is very noticeable in my eyes, the difference between that and 240Hz is not nearly as noticeable. Although I understand the everyone has their own personal preferences, saying that there is no difference between 60Hz and 144Hz probably means that you need to have your eyes checked.

      The human brain can process up to 1000fps. But if you're just plopped in front of a TV and asked to guess what the fps is, you'd probably stop being accurate after around 150fps. But if you put, say, 240fps and 600fps games side by side, you would notice the difference.

      I think the higher framerate is just to reduce the render lag a bit which is what i think mainly causes the motion sickness. Something could render at 1million fps but if it has a 5 second delay every time ur head moves it will still be heavily disorienting.

      Awesome! are you unfamiliar with the term? it is fairly simple and common... i take you've never played a buffered pvp game like on an emulator before? render lag is the offset between the start and end times of a render loop but most people colloquially use it to refer to the interval between their inputs and the perceived visual response from the game. in the case of VR like oculus and vive they have a considerable lag between the moment you turn your head and the time it takes to render the new spot your looking at. happy to help you learn!

    Cinema standard 24fps is set that way because the motion blur it creates is the most natural looking to the human eye. When things reach 30fps or higher in video, things look unnaturally smooth and fluid. When you wave your hand back and fourth in front of your face, your fingers will blur at a consistency that's virtually the same as a 24fps video. Or if you look straight out of the side window of a highspeed moving vehicle. The trees on the side of the road will blur. They won't be perfectly smooth like a 60 or 90 fps video.
    That's why it's chosen for film. Because it's the most natural looking. HOWEVER, obviously for video games, the higher frame rate makes sense. Things need to be more fluid for that, as he already explained in the video.
    But a higher frame rate for film is unnatural, and the only reason we still shoot films at 24fps is because of that reason. Not because it's been a standard like that for so long like you said.

    Prior to sound in film, most frame rates for cinema were around 12fps. This frame rate was decided on as it provided the least amount of perceptible flicker for the amount of film used (film was expensive). Once sound was introduced, a minimum of 24fps was required in order to achieve synchronous sound.
    That is why you have 24fps in movies. Most films today are shot digitally using an Arri Alexa camera whose frame rate is 24fps.
    Today sound sync does not require 24fps to be achieved - It is used today because it is what audiences are used to. Movies could be shot at 60fps today but the look is so different that filmmakers shy away from it in the event it has a negative effect on the financial performance of a film.
    24fps is a known entity. Hollywood is not known for it's enthusiasm for risk taking.
    Great video Falcon.

      The brain can, sure. But *you,* sitting in front of a screen, wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 500 and 1000. We top out at the 150-200 range.

      +jet100a it is all relative to training. if you spend time watching variable framerates your brain will dedicate more resources to future attempts and you'll find the differences slightly more noticeable. video game players can guess a framerate much better than non-video game players, for obvious experience-based reasons.

      If you don't ever drop below 144 fps G-Sync is basically useless...You could get a bit less lag with it off and if you can run games at 300+ fps a bit less time between latest frame rendered and latest frame displayed...Before you call out screen tearing as long as you are around 300 fps it is basically nonexistent, although truthfully I have not experienced any screen tearing after getting a 144hz monitor no matter the frame rate.

    • @joewickham2825
      @joewickham2825 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Its a 1440P monitor, and while 50% games hit the 144HZ (or 165 if i set it to that). I do play harder hitting titles, and maxed out games like wildlands, MEA, and such will vary 80-120. Gsync is well worth it.

    • @bosskeystore8694
      @bosskeystore8694 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok that makes more sense, at the lower frames Gsync and Freesync make a huge difference. Still if you want to get a bit less by way of input lag on fps games like csgo that run at really high framerates on good hardware you can turn off gsync to lower input lag as Gysnc and Freesync do add quite a bit of input lag. There wont be much in the way of tearing provided you can run around 300-500 fps. I did use freesync for a while when I play harder to run games and it does make a difference.

    dunno how some people in the comments don't get it. I'll try to dumb it down. If it's a high paced game to begin with you'd want it smooth and responsive so you can enjoy it more. if it's some slow strategy or turn based game or a game not very action focused, the framerate's don't matter as much. sitting there playing a fast paced game that can't hold a solid, stable performance is like driving a Lamborghini that has its engine randomly shut off and turn back on while trying to go full speed down a clear straightway. From a gamer perspective it leads to the gamer being more furstrated with the game for lagging during a crucial moment making them start over a difficult fight or level rather than just being angry at themselves for messing up. It's not fun.
    I'm just a "gameplay first" kind of person if all a game has to offer is story with mediocre gameplay, I'll just go watch a movie instead. I have no problem turning stuff down in settings just to make sure the game runs well, even if my machine is above its requirements. If developers were actually better about working on performance instead of graphical fluff on console or in general for that matter; so games wouldn't struggle and hardly ever keep stability My PS4 and old 360 would have a larger library right now. I mean seriously, what's the point of locking a game at 30 FPS if it's still going to tank well below that randomly while playing (talking close to slow mo camera here)? o_O

    I can't play first person games at less than 60fps without either having to take Dramamine or ending up with motion sickness. Right now I'm waiting on a new power supply for my PC so that I can update my 7 year old GPU so that I get better frame rates. As for going beyond 60fps I really can't tell the difference between 60 and 100 too much. Neurologist say that it takes about 0.25 seconds for an impulse to travel down and cause a reaction in your hand, which is why muscle memory and practice is so important to people like gamers and musicians. Something I've said for a while when concerning hardware when the PS4 Pro, and Scorpio started talking about 4K gaming is that they need to get consistent 60fps at 1080P before trying to go up in resolution.

    If there is an option to turn motion blur off, I keep it OFF! If there's no option, I just don't play the game. I want a wholesome experience, not your skewed perception of 'advanced theatrics.' Same with no option to invert X _and_ Y camera movement.

      Really? You do realize 1000 bucks is a huge jump from 300 to 400. Besides let's be honest, your parents bought you that 1000 dollar computer. Not only that but most people with a brain aren't going to waste hundreds more just for better performance when most console games run just fine. When you're an adult with actual responsibilities you'll understand one day :)

    • @GaminGusTav
      @GaminGusTav 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ZACH117kitty lmao. A PC at the price for a console (300-400) will outperform the console. If you spend $1000 on a PC, you will notice more than some performance improvements. And PC has better multimedia and in general more games. If you consider a PC waste, a console should be even more of a waste, since you pay more for less uses. Seems like you do not have a brain then. You will understand, what it means to think and to inform yourself before writing and a dumb ass comment, when you are an adult with a job. Oh wait. You dont have a job. That's why you cant afford a PC. :) And I bet with you that there are more adults with a PC than adults with a console. Kids and teenagers make up a big margin of console owners.

      Doge Coin Miner I do, since I did surely not get it from my parents. My PC cost 600€ (once ofc), then you gotta pay your internet provider which also adds to your bills. But you have to do that with console as well, along with paying 60€ a month for multiplayer. In the long run, a PC is cheaper than console.

    • @SaltVinegar2010
      @SaltVinegar2010 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doge Coin Miner $500-$600 will get you a pretty decent PC. Also with a PC you can get a lot of work done which can actually make you money. It's a much better long term investment than a console. You also can pay for it on finance instead of paying the cost upfront. You don't need to get a $1000+ PC.

    so, a little correction: 35mm film movies, which are mostly phased out in major theaters(in favor of digital) have 24 frames per second, but they display/flash each frame TWICE, which means that they are actually running at 48fps. at a real 24fps, stuff gets a bit jumpy/odd to the human eye, since 24fps to 30fps is where most people's brains start stringing together the images into a single moving image, so to deal with the variance between people, they display each frame twice.
    Digital movies, and digital projectors run from between 48hz, or true 48 frames per second(with 48 actual frames per second) in 2D, all the way up to 240hz interpolated for 3D. look up how the interpolated 3D works too, its kinda cool. It displays your eyes in RLRBRL, which results in a framerate "feel" of 40fps, which results in most people no longer suffering from motion sickness during 3D, but it is actually displaying 240 "real" frames per second, with 1/6th of those being black to allow your brain to work out the depth perception.

    With my old computer, I was used to playing games at roughly 20 frames per second... and they are completely playable like that. My new computer can play them up to 60, which I believe is my refresh rate, and it is a lot better... but honestly, I don't see framerate as being too important. I don't play multiplayer games, and I don't get motion sickness.
    I can definitely understand the need for higher framerates for multiplayer games though.

  • @GuySocket

    There's some misinformation here. There's no game that has an input lag of 16 ms at 60 fps on consoles. The lowest input lag last gen at 60 fps was 50ms. This generation, because a lot of games use some form of vsync the input lag is around 100 ms. -16 ms of input lag translates to 1 frame of lag. Which means if there's 100 ms of input lag you'll see about 6 frames pass between when you pressed a button and the action shows on screen. - Personally, having played battlefield and counter-strike on PC with a CRT monitor at 120 FPS, I could still tell the difference in smoothness and control responsiveness even between 90 and 120. For most people, though, a rock solid 60 without vsync, buffering, and a proper aiming mechanic (no smoothing, timed acceleration or massive deadzone) should be fine.

    In 2020 I can safely say that the majority of so-called "gamers" don't even know what frame rate is. I can also say, from experience, that nowadays people are getting better and better at lying and pretending they have technical knowledge about computers, when in fact they don't even know, or care, what a "byte" even means. Tell them about anti-aliasing and they think you are crazy. Oh yes, some call themselves "engineers" just because they have payed big money to get a diploma.

My PC is pretty decent and I got a 2k monitor so Newer games usually run at 2560x1440 60fps and if not I drop it to 1080p, change the cap to 120hz(doesn't usually stay locked but it's always above 60).

      That's a pretty sweet setup.
      What's your specs...the monitor included cus I SO want that monitor? (I mean, there's probably a better one but I dunno about it)

      +Politically Incorrect I actually got really lucky with the monitor when I bought it I had no idea it was possible to overclock it I mainly wanted the 1440p. Search amazon or newegg for QNIX 2710 and it'll come up I'm not sure exactly which one I got as it was many years ago and what I do remember is it shipped from Korea and I couldn't read the box lol. Had it's own special converter for US power outlets and all and at the time 300$ was a bargain for 27 inch 1440p even without knowing about the overclock.
      Rest of my build is a 980, 16 gigs of RAM, i7 2600k. And yeah as far as gaming those it's great for what it is. I could tell the difference in color quality from the Windows logo alone the first time I booted it up. It is more focused on image quality than what you would want for competitive gaming though and that's it's only downside. I've been wanting to get one of those nice legit 144hz 1440p gsync beauties but they all seem to cost 500-700. :(

      @criticismcat7532 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i5 4460, 750Ti, 8GB of ram, not nearly as good as yours.
      And hey, it might not be the BEST for gaming but at least you don't have a 1080p 60hz monitor, TN panel thing, I dunno the response time but it's probably not that good.
      Honestly, if response time was my only drawback, I'd be pretty happy although I don't really play games which needs a fast response so that doesn't hurt.
      I actually couldn't find the specified model, this being the closest I got. www.amazon.co.uk/d/Monitors/QNIX-QHD2710R-MULTI-Matte-2560x1440-Remote-Control/B01E3FLVWS/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1492419729&sr=8-3-fkmr0&keywords=QNIX+2710

    • @InMaTeofDeath
      @InMaTeofDeath 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Politically Incorrect Haha well you'll be happy to hear for the time being that TN is actually better for that type of response time. IPS panels like mine are better for image quality but won't give you as good performance as a TN could, me personally I play more single player games anyway so I'm not too bothered by it and I just unlock it/drop to 1080 for something like Titanfall 2 for the extra frames. That game looks great for the source engine but if you play the multiplayer right you won't have any time to appreciate it anyways lol.

    • @criticismcat7532
      @criticismcat7532 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha! I suppose so.
      As I say, the response time usually isn't important to me (Although I suppose it'll be helpful in something like TF2.)

    Is it better to have unlimited frames, like 120+, or is it ok to just have 60fps?

    • @jamescatton210
      @jamescatton210 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Space Aids 60 fps is completely fine for most casual gamers. There's nothing wrong with 120fps+, I mean if your computer can do it, go for it. The only advantage is that if you have higher fps your reaction times will be faster. So unless you're really into competitive games like CS:GO where reactions are quite important when playing on a competitive level, you don't really need 120fps+. If you have a standard 60hz monitor, you probably won't notice the difference between 60fps and 100+ fps.

      Atømic Correction: If you have a 60hz monitor you will NOT see any difference. Your PC might say your game is at 120fps, but since the monitor can only run at 60 fps, it's impossible to actually see 120fps.

      Even on my shitty 60hz monitor I get as high of a framerate as I can on every game that it doesn't cause problems for. It simply feels more responsive and looks better. Some games have things like physics tied to your framerate (looking at you, bethesda games) so going above 60 puts you at risk of things not working right, but aside from those edge cases I say take as many frames as you can get. However If your pc is so powerful that you constantly get far above 300 fps you should probably cap it, or you will put unnecessary strain on your hardware.
      Simple answer, for most people, just get as much FPS as you can- it's more responsive and looks better

    • @DezZzO_YT
      @DezZzO_YT 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are wrong, Kyle. Even on 60hz monitor you can see the difference between 60 fps and 100-150+ fps.
      It is minimal indeed, but anyway.

    At 2:35 the video mentions input lag caused by lower framerate, while showing a game like Forza Horizon 3 that polls for input at 360 times per second. So it isn't input lag caused by the game engine, but our ability to respond to what we see from the game. The correct wording would be that the action on screen at a lower framerate affects the speed of our input, rather than vice versa.
    Especially with a game like that that polls for user input 4 times faster than 60Hz.
    Also, most physics systems run at much faster than the framerate. Gran Turismo runs physics at 1000Hz, and that's an extreme example, but many opt to do it at 120Hz or higher.
