There are so many other options that don't cause this. I'm bipolar & switched to Lamictal decades ago. I only know 3 people who stuck with lithium. All 3 have kidney failure. Two are also diabetic. I know 2 of them can't hold their bladder. I think this percentage needs to be re-evaluated. I feel that a class action lawsuit should be taken into consideration. People take depacote too. I know I spelled that wrong, but lithium is outdated & has more dangerous consequences than the others.
Fun fact: the names insipidus (tasteless) and mellitus (sweet) come from the fact that in the older times before we could measure glucose, doctors/people had to actually taste the pee (I know, ew) to tell if it was sweet or not 😳
I wonder if lithium orotate would avoid these problems. It's pretty much a food state microdose compared to pharmaceutical lithium but people often find it helps with depression and anxiety. I havent found any information on people trying it as an alternative treatment for schizophrenia though.
I was trying to find your depression handout for patients (with mindfulness, exercise tips, etc) but can't find it anymore. Where are those handouts located now? Thanks
I had renal tubular acidosis which caused me chronic kidney stones (mostly small, although they did get larger after I stopped taking it). I was on potassium citrate for a few years but i havent needed to take it in a while. It really sucked cus im 25 (was 23 at the time) and no doctor would take me seriously 😢
The step from nephrogenic diabetes insipidus to collecting cell remodeling as unclear. Everything you in the lithium and diabetes part would predict a complete reversal if lithium is discontinued. Why is the tissue remodeling, just because aquaporins are less expressed?
I agree, and haven't found a reason that I found to be a convincing answer. If something helps me to understand something clinically, I'll put an intellectual black box over it, and keep trucking along. That said, a ton of medications that lead to physiological changes that have downstream (and largely unpredictable) remodeling.

Sorry to hear that- hope you're doing better!
@Psychofarm If there was a drug made that could decrease the ADH resistance, then this problem would go away, right?
