  • The NBA gives its MVP awards to players who meet certain criterias... but what if the MVP was just given to the best player? We're looking at who would win it in those cases from the 1980s.

One thing you didn't mention for '87 is that MJ became the first out of only three players to ever record 200+ steals w/ 100+ blocks in a season. The league somehow forgot to include him in the All-Defensive Team, so he repeated the same feat in '88, making him the only one to do so and earning him the DPOY. He also reached a career peak of 259 stls & 131 blks that year.

Sadly, Lebron fans are discrediting Michael Jordan"s victories and achievements. They like to say that MJ only beat the Pistons and Lakers when they get older.
But all of he Pistons"s best players were under 30.
Magic was only 31 years old and he was the second best player in the Nba.
      James Worthy ( age 29 ).
Lebron fans forget to mention that Prime Lebron James lost to a team whose best player was 38-years-old Tim Duncan.
      2014 Nba Finals.

@@allanhouston6759 Facts. And if we are doing their best solo runs (2007 Lebron vs 1989 Jordan), you will see the BIG difference in competition and success. Jordan faced 50-win teams from the first round of 1989 up to the ECF 63-win Pistons where he took 2 games. Lebron on the other hand, faced 2 .500 (41-41) teams in the Wizards and the Nets before facing a 53-win Pistons team (who are a farcry from the Pistons that beat the Lakers in 2004 or the Pistons that Jordan faced in 1989).
Jordan, alone, was the ONLY one who beat the pistons in that postseason (the Pistons 4-0 swept Magic). On the contrary, whenever Lebron faced a championship-bound team "alone" in 2007, he couldn't even take one game. Note that Jordan didn't have Phil Jackson or a Star Pippen, just decent (just-got-off-the-bench-rotation) Scottie Pippen.
People always love to brag about lebron getting to the finals where he got badly swept (the WCF was the actual finals that year) but forget that Jordan turned the 1989 ECF into the Finals (as the 1989 Pistons 4-0 swept the Lakers). I'm not even going to go into the individual performance cause Lebron averaged 23ppg on 37FG%...

There is a reason they were barely better as a team than when he missed the full year. They were below 500 and only made the playoffs because 8 out 11 teams in the east that year made the playoffs, they were the 8th seed and 5th out of 6 teams in their division, 25 less wins than the lakers, 19 worse than the celtics. @@jasonmoukala8909 He won't ever be MJ ceiling.. But Hakeem? I could see that.
Giannis is 1 ring away from matching Hakeem. 1 Finals MVP away from matching Hakeem.
Giannis has 2 MVP, 1 more than Hakeem. Hakeem does have 6 top 5 MVP voting to Giannis 3 but Giannis is still young to get more MVP votes.
Giannis has 1 less DPOY than Hakeem.
Giannis has 4 all defense teams compared to Hakeem's 9 but again, Giannis is still young.
When all is said and done, Giannis can be Hakeem or surpass him.

Johnny: mentions Magic was the only player in nba history to average 12 asts and 23 pts in a single game.
Also Johnny: forgets to mention Isiah Thomas’s season in 1985 where he was the only player in nba history to average atleast 13 APG while scoring atleast 20ppg. Isiah average 13.9 APG.

I LOVE the Jordan era of basketball being a product of the "slower" 70's game. BUT to say Jordan's 1988 MVP season is the "Best Ever" is kinda a stretch for two reasons: 1) Blocks & Steals were not counted until 1973-74, 2) Was there a DPOY during Wilt and Kareem's era?

1987 they could have had 3 MVP’s (Magic, Larry, and Michael) and nobody would have been mad. Basically peak performances from the 3 of the top 10 (easily top ten not trying to argue) players of all time.
