  • Recently we had the inside door handle break and it needed replacing. This was a very simple procedure to tackle and thought I'd capture this to share with everyone. Dutchmen RV Company had this part in stock and shipped it to us in a couple of days.

Thanks - your video gave me the idea of keeping the old "non-broken" half of the removed lock as a back-up!
A simple repair, but clear and pleasant instructions = subscribed.

Great how to video Adam and Abby! Stainless steel version of that paddle would last forever and make a nice CNC project for the other channel.

Glad to see you using a drill instead of an impact, and finishing the screws out by hand.. ive seen too many ppl cross-thread and/or strip screws using just an impact.. good job!
My only concern is the liquid lube collecting dust.. ive had good luck with graphite..
Cheers from Southwestern Indiana and happy camping!

Stuff like this on campers that is even subjected to gentle but moderate use never holds up. Imagine how quick stuff like this would wear out if you added a couple of kids to your travels. When we had kids in ours through the years stuff like this was an almost weekly thing.

It's the same with things like the wheel bearings.
It's pretty standard for automotive bearings in 3500kg vans to last 100k without completely falling apart or seizing.
Trailers and caravans seem to require service after any kind of extended use.

It's not your fault Abby. Those are made out of what is referred to as Pot Metal. Its just crappy low cost metal. It's essentialy metal version of mdf particle board.

Boy I’ve got the same dewalt brushless battery powered impact. Very nice for smaller bolts and screws. I really like it. Nice job Adam.

That was very helpful. I have two of those locks to replace. They are old and starting to look ready to break. Now I am reassured that replacing them will be straight forward. Thank you for the info!

That’s one of the bad things about campers the door handles break way to easily they should use something stronger even if it is a little bigger thanks for sharing
I thought my door was gonna break this winter it iced up and luckily I had a feeling before I tried to force it I sprayed it with penetrating oil and it thawed out and pushed the water out of the latch

Reminded me... I once replaced a similar assembly... but more involved & time consuming. It took over two hours as a lot of additional components had to be removed & replaced
Once done, it was found they'd shipped the incorrect key... and I ended up having to reinstall the old unit; _then_ repeat the entire song/dance upon the correct key arrival.
I guess the moral of the story is check any & everything in your power before starting any project... but even then surprises lurk.
    Cool videos, Thanks!

I know what you're saying about the pressure and wear and tear...but that tells me that they need to improve that area instead of just "accepting" it breaking. These things are built to a price, and that's a pretty hefty price today. Using pot metal on parts like this isn't the best thing to do IMHO...

Should mine also break, and the latches appear the same from rv manufacturer to the next, I'd install an aftermarket keyless version. Uses a key pad and remote. Seen this on other rv TH-cam channels. Thanks for the video Adam and Abbey.

You can easily make a new paddle for the latch.

    • @AbomAdventures
      @AbomAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sure I could but the video is relatable to folks owning RV/s that can replace a broken part themselves, not machine one. If a part was hard to obtain or super expensive then that would a good option.

at least twice a year i spray wd in and the latch by doing this it also helps shutting the door quieter

I keep a dap of CNC sp-350 on the striker to help with it sliding shut. It stays in place for a while.

Just curious while shopping for the replacement did you ever think about going with the RV Lock, the one you just punch a code in? I have been thinking I would like one but just wondering if you know something I haven’t heard about them.

would you not have done better making one out of steel instead of another piece of cast trash that is almost certain to go again if it is pulled the slightest bit too hard

How is that relatable to folks who don't have the shop or skills to machine one? I'm showing how to replace a broken part to help others who may run into the same issue.
