Three additional points. (1) Many modern black tanks have a hose connection that you can use to flush the tank with campground water after you dump the tank. It is recommended that you use a separate hose from your freshwater hose so you don't contaminate you freshwater supply. (2) After dumping the black, dump the gray through your sewer line to flush it out, (3) When connecting the sewer hose, test it first with a the release of a little from the gray tank to make sure your hose connections do not leak.

Interesting about the pipe aspect, something I never considered. I will change my method to follow the preload a few gallons of water first than add the enzyme. Great job as usual Randy, keep up the great work. Chris

Bought a smaller used camper recently and I treated our system the exact same way as you've shown. An idea to consider: I'll pour a few yeast packets into the house toilets to recharge the septic tank with enzymes. I'm considering the same with the camper's system, much less yeast, of course.

I'm very grateful for your tip. Most other videos talk about water softeners, Dawn, vinegar, just to name a few. But do they take into consideration what those things do to the normal process that is supposed to happen in a healthy septic tank? I'm hooked to my own septic system (since only two months) so I must avoid destroying the useful bacteria needed!
I hope this will also help with the terrible odors that I'm getting lately from the toilet. Oh my, it's horrible! So much so that I would like to be able to avoid having to use that little spot...

We consider our unit to be a travel trailer, yet contrary to your "most" tanks, our black tank holds ten gallons. We have a 17' Casita.

  • @KevinCoop1

How do you prevent struvite? Just my opinion. A holding tank is not a septic tank. They are not performing the same function. An rv holding tank only needs to hold it until dumped. No need for digesters, and TP dissolves from water. Holding tank has 3” drain. If it went down the toilet, it will drain. A septic system is for making it safe to dissipate the water into the ground. So, it must be dissolved. No need for enzymes there either. Your body makes them and go into the septic tank and work. I do not use any of those digester products, and I have no issues with smells, and my sensors work because no struvite. I use 3/4 cup Borax dissolved in hot water, and a clothes washer pod in my black tank.

Is it wrong to thoughly flush out the black tank so its completely cleaned out after dumping or should you leave some waste behind for the bacteria to grow on.

We never put toilet paper into the tank. It goes into a small garbage can and empty it accordingly. We're on a septic system at home and do the same thing there. Years ago we had our tank pumped and the company doing the pump told us the best thing to do was to not put the toilet paper into the system. We figured the same logic would be good for our trailer. Don't want TP clogs!
