This is awesome! I am 3AD at the moment with a crew of 90, cast of 22 with 120 extra's and after watching this I feel so happy. My first experience as an AD was in 2010 and there was nothing this informative available, (learnt the hard way). This is the best advice a new AD could ask for!
thank you so much for watching and for your amazing comment!!! i def learned the hard way hahaha it was rough. so glad i can help the new ADs out there! 🎥🖤🎥
I'm learning to be a 3AD, a top 1AD recently said I was a strong runner, trying to learn the ropes to step up in the future. Watching the 3,2,1ADs closely right now.
I am someone who has done volunteer and independent work directing and camera operating for a few years but never got the chance to get into a film crew yet. Still looking for that PA job and this video was very nice to watch, tbh AD sounds just like my current job as an Expeditor at a restaurant lol. When everything gets crazy, I'm the one who hears it from the waitstaff and the kitchen while I try to keep the whole thing moving.
Hi, I just found your channel and I love how open you are about describing how you got to where you are. I’m 17 and I live in Chicago. I’ve never had a formal job before and I really don’t have a clue where to start in the film industry. My goal is to become a director for decent budget films and work my way up. What should I do/where should I go to to take my first step?
Work on literally any type of project that comes your way! At this time since you have zero experience anything will help elevate you. Work on weekends, or breaks you have from school and volunteer!
Wow, after watching this, I 100% did this the wrong way :) first real film set experience I was brought on as what I thought was a PA, but when I got to set, Suprise! guess who is the 1st AD for a production that had lost their AD. 3 shoots in I still really have no idea what i am doing but both the producer and director say I'm doing a good job... so either I'm great at the fake it till you make it, or I have struck it super lucky on getting it right. Either way, now I'm going to feel even more out of place on set :)
noooooo don't feel more out of place on set at all!! listen if they think you're doing a good job you're doing something right! You can only get better knowing this 🎥😀😎😀🎥
@@BeyondFilmSchool It has made me feel more confident that I am doing things correctly. But from the info I have gained from the video I am going to amend how I approach things on set, and hopefully come across as more professional. :)
Ooh i love this question! Covid protocols Fire exits Any safety risks that deal with your shooting in the scene following the safety meeting. I usually do a run down for the day and what the day looks like, and estimated wrap. I also mentions any special things that might take extra time.
One big piece of advice is avoid gossip and "ganging up" on certain crew / departments / actors. Sometimes it's tempting to vent and pay out, but nothing good comes from it and you end up looking like a total d*ck.
I'm so nervous I'm in uni and being the first AD for a 5 min film, we have only done a 1 min film before this and i was the designer 😢 feel like I'm drowning already 😢😢😢😢
I def fell you! You're leveling up and the feeling of discomfort is 100% normal! just take it dept by dept, and scene by scene and you're gonna rock it! and don't obsess over timing too much. Yes - we are the time keepers but if you obsess too much over every minute you'll drive yourself crazy. there's a eb and flow. godspeed! I know you'll come out of this a better AD! :-D
hi there! Get on set as a Set PA! watch the AD watch how things happen. also being a good AD and getting the appropriate timing for certain scenes comes from being on set a lot. So you gain that set experience. I started PA- ing and then jumped into the indie world as an AD . I started super small with those one day short film projects with close friends or coworkers that just wanted to make anything.
@@BeyondFilmSchool thank you for your reply…I’m from India….actually the place I’m joining are hiring 5 ADs for pre production and approached me for an AD….so wanted your tips..I’m not sure if they have PA requirements…also will there be weekly offs and holidays on a set…
Definitely not a job for everyone. Ive seen 1st AD's cry on set because they couldnt do it. The only thing i dont like about some AD's is when they call Action and Cut. Thats the Directors job imo
Yep ADs - lil secret they all cry lol the good ones don't do it on set 🤣 But the AD can call action and cut it depends on the situation on set and whether the director wants to scream or not.
@@BeyondFilmSchool First time I experienced if was on set. But I dunno. I just think it's stepping on the directors toes. I've even heard a director tell his AD not to cut too early. I'm thinking, well....why don't you call it!
I've honestly never had any desire to be an AD. However, it's extremely helpful to know what other people's job are and what to expect of them.

Damn, you’ve been a 3rd AD for 13 years ? The industry is tufff
I'm learning to be a 3AD, a top 1AD recently said I was a strong runner, trying to learn the ropes to step up in the future. Watching the 3,2,1ADs closely right now.
Oh that's so great. I love when ppl get those compliments!
Those actually are really good tips.

Hi Amber, I was wondering if you have any tips or things that an AD must mention for the safety meeting and closing meeting?
Ooh i love this question!
Covid protocols
Fire exits
Any safety risks that deal with your shooting in the scene following the safety meeting.
I usually do a run down for the day and what the day looks like, and estimated wrap.

I get what your saying but it's the directors preference. We go off what they want.
