What I really like about these videos explaining film industry jobs is that I watch a lot of "behind the scenes" DVDs of big feature productions and see a lot of the professionals you are mentioning at work on films like LORD OF THE RINGS. I always wonder about what they do more specifically and your videos details it out. What funny is on Peter Jackson's BTS DVD you can actually see the managers fighting. It's RAW. I also love your rawness about being your career. Thanks.
awww thank you so much for your comment!! Thats always my hope for when people watch, because I just want to give the reality of what it's really like in certain positions. thank so much for watching! 🎥😀🎥
I've been doing jobs as a 1st and 2nd AD for almost a year now. I've also worked as a Production Coordinator on a micro budget film and Associate Producer on a "no" budget film. Might have an opportunity to work as a UPM on an ultra low budget SAG production. But, I'm definitely still learning the filmmaking ropes. Any thoughts on taking such a leap? Sidebar- this video (and ALL your videos) was SUPER helpful! Thank you!
This video was 100% on point. If only all the other positions knew what we as “UPMs” do to make it happen. Well done explaining the job in detail. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
May be a stupid question, but is there a position on set that just takes care of all crew, actors ect? As far as questions, water, misc needs ect. Like a hospitality/human relations type role??
Not a stupid at all. The folks who take care of cast are our cast PAs/ 1st team PAs (different name because of different regions- same thing though.) The bigger studios do have an HR dept though in the more traditional sense. But the ones who need to actually take care of the crew and make sure needs are meant are the producers really if I'm being honest. But they got too much going on. In order to enforce safety concerns and needs are met you have a Shop Stewart. Who is part of IATSE. They're already a crew member and they take on that additional responsibility and represent the crew in that way.
I'm working on two student short films and they have me as a UPM, i'm nervous and this helped me understand the role a bit more , thank you!
Oh great! You're gonna do amazing! Thanks so much for watching. I'm glad that my video was able to help in some way. 🎥🖤🎥🖤🎥
Facts! Working with UPMs daily, sometimes I forget just how much of a circus their job is.
I ❤ your videos.
Even though I’m an actor, I love learning about all the crew positions. I respect you guys so much, and how hard you work.
Thanks for these. They're so informative.
Not sure how I just found your page... but a lottt of great info!

Is a Production Manager the same as a Unit Production Manager? Sorry but from the UK so may be slightly different.
yeah it's the same from what i understand.
What's an excellent software that makes a UPM's job much easier to do? Anyone?
Great question! Movie magic budgeting and a whole of excel use
Hay im going to college in about 2 years, what do you have to major in to become a unit production manager ?
Accounting is one major that'll be useful not as fun as film production tho lol
So if the UPM do all I have learnt here what then does the PM do?
UPM is a DGA designation. PM is the same position just on indie projects.
Production manager focuses on creative aspects of filmmaking while unit production manager focuses on logistics aspects
You want the film industry better? Stop being woke and start talking to normal people
What in the world does that have to do with being a production manager?
