- Yu-Gi-Oh Cards with the Shortest Effects. While Konami and the Dueling player seem to be obsessed with crazy long cards like Endymion, no love have gone to the succinct. With the help of Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel, obscure prints, and meta staples, we can find the cards with the least words in their text boxes.

It's funny to think that hypothetically, they could print a vanilla link 1 monster with the summoning conditions of "1 card"

@@anotherjason The problem is that as Link Spider and Linkuriboh and the many archetype-locked Link 1s have told us, a vanilla Link 1 that has no summoning conditions and only requires 1 monster would be a meta staple because it's just a guaranteed way to get a monster off the board for any reason.
Also it just being "1 card" would make me wonder if you could use a Spell/Trap to make it.

Bro I saw that card, and I was just befuddled at what I was just looking at. It made me laugh😂
In Japanese the flavour text is "w"
short for "warai", translated to "laugh". That's how they laugh on the internet ("wwwww" = "lololol")
So basically the translation would be "lol"
Upon further investigation, "^^" is the korean translation of the text. The official translation is, apparently, "lol, weeds." which is still longer than LAN's text.
They botched it tbh just put "lol"

I think the title for the shortest normal monster text goes for mekk-knight Avram that says:
"Check this out!" 17 characters in total.
I don't know if there any normal monster shorter than this but he's the one that comes to my mind
Avram is the shortest, with 3 words and 17 characters. Then come:
White Duston (5 words and 25 characters) "The proudust of them all."
Souleater (5 words, 27 characters) "A living wonder of mystery."
Shining Friendship (4 words, 30 characters) "The peacemaker among monsters."
Gemini Elf (6 words, 39 characters) "Elf twins that alternate their attacks."
The original Japanese flavour text on Avram is longer, it got ruined in lolcowlization as many things are.

I'm going to be real, when you said "if we look one decade back," I was genuinely expecting you to show a card from 2004
If you include Rush Duel, we don't know how it will be localized but the normal monster "Grass" has the flavor text of "w" (ruby text of "weed"). Depending on how you feel about ruby text, this is a card with a single character of text.
The Korean printing localized it as "^^"
The proposed English localization would be "lol, weed" at 2 words, 9 characters, but due to a possible drug reference I wouldn't be surprised if it was shortened to "lol" or even just uses the Korean localization.
What a fun discovery that many are unaware of. Also, the wording of the very old cards is so bad but as the time went on, the translation was getting better.
Cyber Harpie Lady has the shortest effect. It has exactly 0 characters, because the effect is just empty.

Something interesting about old school yugioh as that shorter effects were just better. For example:
Raigeki: Destroy all monsters your opponent controls
VS
Diffusion wave motion: if your opponent controls a monster and you control a specific type of monster it is REQUIRED to attack every monster your opponent controls, and other monsters you control can’t attack
this is odd to say, considering diffusion wave motion is like.. only a year after raigeki.
most people would still very much consider diffusion wave motion 'old-school'
technicaly the effect is only the part after the ; so if there is a card who's entire effect is banish it ,it has the shortest effect
skelangel shows why key words are thing, it would make the list if instead of flip they written the rules of flip monsters on every flip monster.

Yes it did. The first English printing of Poly was LOB in 2002. Look up a first edition LOB-059 to verify.

Konami really needs to implement keywords. Not too many card text shorter, no, but so they can print the trap card “No.” with the effect “No” that’s an omninegate.
Keywords sounds good on paper but they would have to completely rewrite how effects are structured to do so. What the OCG does with using bullet points on effects is probably a better suggestion and works better with how card text is structured.

The video game "Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution" comtains every card printed at its time of release in 2019. The game has over 38,000 cards you can collect, and I've collected them all. I found this figure by simply using a calculator and adding the total number of cards in each available pack.

Blue medicine and Jar of Greed have 12 characters. Periods count. This problem persists throughout the video. :P Doesn't apply to the Link Monsters though.
....It would be fitting if the red "medicine" gets the both players gain 400 if both called their coin toss right.

Graceful Charity was not introduced to the banlist in 2003, it was originally semi limited in 2002, and limited in 2003, before being fully banned in 2004, and coming unbanned briefly in 2005, and a few times thereafter, usually still being limited to one.
Not only that, but in 2003, there were NO fully banned cards.
Even the shortest text category got powercrept by modern Yugioh!

The shortest mtg effect is probably "trample" clocking in at one word, 6 characters. Printed on by far the best, most meta-defining card ever printed. And reprinted.

@@imasocialbutterflful in a vacuum, neither work. Scry requires a number, while Goad requires a target. Both add excess characters that make them longer than Haste.

i played against an npc once wich had the monster card grass wich had 0 attack nor defense, and the discription was just ^^
edit: found the card, its in the rush duel section and its called: Grass, its a level 1 earth plant normal monster with no attack nor defense

I prefer cards with long text boxes only because I feel like there is no middle ground between a card with short text either being pack filler or obscenely broken and both being quite uninteresting and bland. That being said, the amount of text in cards does feel like it's too much right now and it would be nice if it was organized better since the ammount of rules misunderstandings and misplays in tournaments is higher than it ever has been, even with top tier players.
I always hate the card text "when your opponent activates a spell, trap, or effect negate the card effect." It just sounds redundant because of cards that say "when your opponent activates an effect negate it"
the cards with the shortest effects are normal monsters, because they dont have effects
