    OMG! What a great way to fix it. I wanted to cry because I flubbed up on five pieces and poured resin over them 3x and they still had issues. I used foam brushes on them and no torch. You are amazing. Thanks!

    Love the ending commentary on the black background. Too cute. I appreciate the repair work and the fact you showed your safety gear (yeah!) Handy future tip is to only go up 100-ish grits at once to keep sanding grooves smoothed out from the last round (220-320-400, etc. Probably fine to go 220-400 here since resin is so thick compared to paint.) 400 is usually where auto repairs stop to paint so can save your 800 for really fine work and stop at 400. Lovely piece, well done.

    Nice fix! I would have thought you would have had to sand the entire piece in order for the resin to stick. Nice to know it's not always necessary.

    • @DebyatMixedMediaArts
      @DebyatMixedMediaArts  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think if I was doing a multi layer piece with thick layers, I would do that, but for this thin wipe over, it is most likely OK. But no harm in giving the entire surface a quick sand just to be sure.

    Your work looks very professional. I have been refurbishing the interior of a 21-year-old Rolls Royce (leather and wood) and the picnic tables on back of the front seats looked awful. After repairing the veneer and stripping them to the best of my ability I put on more than a dozen coats of lacquer with a spray gun but I could not get the finish even and it was very dull so after watching some videos I decided to use epoxy resin on them. At first I thought it looked great on the top side but days later when I did the bottoms they looked very, very bad---a medium scale disaster---and over flow messed up one of the good sides. I have most it removed. It came off of one table in one intact sheet. Now I am afraid to use epoxy resin on them again. Should I try epoxy again or use a spray on polyurethane?

    Hi there Deby. I have done all the above as suggested and I am onto my third repair on a canvas. First one fish eyed. So I sanded it as above then cleaned it with alcohol. Repoured then a fly snuck in and walked on it. Repeated the same procedure and then a line appeared around 1/2 an hour after I was sure it was perfect. Very frustrating to say the least. So is the sponge brush the best method for application rather than a spatula. Thank you.

    • @DebyatMixedMediaArts
      @DebyatMixedMediaArts  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder if the coat was too thick? And then it ran a little while setting up? You may need to sand it smooth again and try with a very thin coat. I'm painting it on a bit like nail varnish. Perhaps even setting the pyramid level and doing one side at a time so it can't run.

    • @DebyColes
      @DebyColes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      urgh, hair is difficult because so rarely is it just sat on the surface and can be sanded out. You usually have to dig it out and then uneven voids in the resin can be impossible to fill without seeing it later. Sand as much as possible to remove the hair if its close to the surface. If it's deep, you may have to cut it out with a sharp blade, then flood coat. good luck

    • @SewModernBags
      @SewModernBags 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not mixing the resin with anything, it's just the usual resin mix. But you ALWAYS have to mix the resin and hardener to use it, otherwise it won't 'work', it won't cure. So yes, mix your two parts in the usual way, but don't mix in anything else with it. Sorry if that was confusing.

    I have no idea how it happened, but a coaster I recently made ended up cracking in two places on the side that was face down in the mold. I don't know if it happened when I took it out of the mold and it wasn't fully cured or what. It's not cracked all the way through. Should I try to sand it down and then put a top coat? I do have objects in it, so I'm afraid sanding it on that side will ruin it. Any advice?

    • @DebyatMixedMediaArts
      @DebyatMixedMediaArts  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh thats a difficult one. This is really only for surface flaws. If you have a crack that goes into the body of the resin, even if you create a nice new surface you may still be able to see the crack underneath.

    I made my first UV resin piece last night and I messed it up, fixed it and messed it up again! It's a 1 1/2" X 1" pendant. I don't think the second one can be fixed. I put some tiny seashells in it that I want to get out of the resin. Any tips? I'm considering soaking the pendant in acetone to try and dissolve the entire thing. What a waste!

    • @DebyatMixedMediaArts
      @DebyatMixedMediaArts  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh that really does sound too far done now. Trying to remove something like a shell is going to leave a mark most likely just because of all the nooks and crannies in such a tiny shape. Put it down to a practice, a learning experience, and start again. UV resin is expensive so I understand your pain.

      @DebyatMixedMediaArts  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What an interesting question. I honestly don't know the answer because I've never done it myself, but it *should* work I would think. It would give the same effect to mask any scratches, but whether you would see any difference in the two materials used, I just don't know. I hope you will give it a go on a test piece and let us know how you get on.

    Can you help, I want to pour a second layer, the first layer was poured using a mold, so on the second layer do I put the object back in the mold? The only thing I fear is...the object is already at the top of the mold, so it will run off the sides when I pour on the top layer. And it’s my understanding that at least 1/4 epoxy needs to be poured, then wait till it gets like glue
    Can you advise me

    • @DebyatMixedMediaArts
      @DebyatMixedMediaArts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the piece is already at the top of the mold then probably no point putting it back in. You could try using painters tape to build up a damn around the resin edge to stop more from running over. Do you actually need a thick layer? Could you just brush on a thin layer like in this example?

    • @DebyColes
      @DebyColes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like perhaps they weren't completely mixed. I really make sure to scrape the bottom of the cup and the sides to make sure everything is mixed in well. Its a chemical reaction when the resin sets, and it may look clear enough when mixed, but if things aren't quite right, when the reaction occurs things won't cure properly if there are bits not 100% mixed together sadly.

    How would you fix a big hole in a fountain?

    • @DebyatMixedMediaArts
      @DebyatMixedMediaArts  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is it made of resin? I can't even imagine what that looks like. I can only say with a 3d structure, and a large hole you need to fill, you might want to do it in several layers, and you would certainly need to lie it down to fill so the resin wouldn't run out. Otherwise, I'm a bit stumped.

    I found your video very helpful, one question.
    You said you were going to cover your project .... what do you use to cover it with while it’s still tacky ? And how does it not effect the finish ? Ok so maybe 2 questions !

    • @DebyatMixedMediaArts
      @DebyatMixedMediaArts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the size of the piece. I have a cardboard box and a plastic crate I use, depending how big. Make sure it's dust free, and pop it over the top so it's not touching and then leave for the piece to cure. Prevents and bugs, dust or cat hair getting on the resin while it's still wet.
