How does Internal Family Systems theory work, and what are its limits?
Dr. Dick Schwartz is a systemic family therapist and an academic, known for developing the therapeutic approach called Internal Family Systems. This approach to therapy recognizes all the multi-dimensional aspects of who we are and, most importantly, gives voice to them.
Today, Dr.Schwartz joins Ronan to discuss how to deal with pre-verbal pain, how IFS therapy works, and some precautions one should consider when using psychedelics. Tune in to learn more!

Interesting to think of psychedelics bypassing protectors. Too bad the host didn’t let him expand on that.
I agree
Dr Shwartz is spot on. Now that I’ve found IFS a few months ago, i can see how the psychedelics help me feel so good because they can put me Protectors to sleep while my exiles get to have beautiful experiences. But the hangover (depression, anger, sadness) I feel after is due to my Protectors reawakening, feeling like scared, worried, angry parents who were incapacitated by their young children so they could sneak out of the house in the middle of the night and go do something dangerous with no supervision.
This is right on spot as my companion experienced the same back lash from protectors. Maybe it would be a good idea to prep the protectors for what is about to happen, and negotiate permission for the experience! Just as I’d do with my parents when I was young 😂 still there has to be some level of communication already existing to arrive to this point.
Thank you so much for sharing this, this is so accurate to my experience. Extreme backlash. Then id go through this inner punishment for not being able to integrate. Thank you so much!
@@maesk52Good idea 👌
@@HerbRobertayou’re welcome 🤗
Very thoughtful comments thank you
That was cool. I hate the pathology tbh. Its a negative label & condemning. Thats why I love this modality for me personally
My experience with LSD 50 years ago was liberating, and the only trouble was, at that time in history, the knowledge of how necessary it is to integrate the experience, add well as tools to facilitate integration, was practically non existent.
There was some effort by a few academics to understand the effects, back then. Even Bill W. of AA tripped back in the 1950s, and it helped him significantly.
It seems to me that IFS could be extended to past life experiences as well…as a powerful healing tool.
✅ good video
Reminder majiac and life destory.
No mention of psychedelics in the video?
