Yeah... Pricing wise this is pretty close to a model S p100D. The model S is almost twice as powerful. As much as I LOVE the way this car looks, there's no way I could justify going with this car over the competition.
That was Elon Musk’s dream, not BMW’s. Electric cars are cool, but they have limited usage. You can really take the i8 out and enjoy the drive without worrying about where’s the next charging station.
@@ajlee6933 this may have been the case 10 years ago, but frankly the range on Tesla's high end battery packs rivals or exceeds many internal combustion engines cars these days. The new 200kwh battery they're debuting in the 2020 Roadster, for example, has an estimated thousand km range (plus or minus some depending on driving habits and terrain). Even the current 100kwh battery in the current generation model S is good for 530km... That's about 130 more than I get on a tank in my BMW 335 (commuting). The only real drawback right now is charge times vs refueling times... But with a Tesla super charger those times have shrunk dramatically, and with the ranges provided by 100+kWh battery, you would only need to worry about that on longer road trips.
OJ Abrey commuting to work and back in the city is ideal for Tesla ownership. My experience with the Tesla Model X wasn’t that great. Time was the major issue. My colleagues and I decided to borrow the Model X because of its really cool Auto Pilot feature. The trip was a 3 hour road trip from Atlanta, GA to Spartanburg, SC (159 miles). We departed fully charged (289 miles) and arrived at the supercharger 12 miles away from our destination with 120 miles remaining. We decided that we didn’t want to wait for the Model X to recharge so that we could get back to Atlanta that evening, so we called an Uber to take us the remaining 12 miles to our destination. Now I understand some people are really patient, but it was a big inconvenience for us to wait at a hotel for a recharge.
The i8 has always been misunderstood, and the blame goes to its “supercar” styling. BMW has never marketed the i8 as a supercar. That’s because they know it isn’t one. Instead they call it “iPerformance,” which is just a fancy way of saying a fast hybrid. Which is what the i8 is, a very stylish plug in hybrid.

I guess that price tag is more for the looks and the point that it is the most fancy hybrid. But I agree that most people expect more more performance. And a lot of people are desperate for a real sports car/super car from BMW, which they wished the i8 to be.
Phailox People aren’t comparing the i8 to a supercar because of its price. It gets compared to supercars because of the way it looks. i8 buyers purchased based off looks alone. They’re aware that this isn’t a supercar, but it’s the cheapest way to look like one.

Tidwell bmw don’t do v6 engines. They make inline 6 cylinder engines. And you’re right, they should have put their 6 cylinder engine in instead of that 3 cylinder engine from MINI. Combined with the electric motors, it would have been a powerful performance car. Some even argue that BMW M Division should stick its V8 engine in it to make it i8M or something like that.
AJ Lee that’s not the point. It’s BMW’s most expensive car, supposed to be the brand’s halo car, and designed to look like a supercar. Inevitably it’ll be compared with other brands’ halo cars (AMG GT, Porsche 911, Audi R8 etc). Even BMW now know they made a mistake using a 3 cylinder engine. They’re looking to use a very modified and very turbocharged 4 cylinder engine and/or 6 cylinder performance engine in the next generation of i8 (or whatever new name it’ll be called). Together with electric motor, it’ll make about 500hp in 4 cylinder base form putting it in very high-end sportscar territory. In 6 cylinder engine form, even more horsepower to put it in lower-end supercar territory. If M division gets gold of it and sticks in their V8, then it’ll firmly be in supercar territory. BMW can easily do this and it’ll sell.
Had an i8 roadster since Aug, love the way it shoots you out of corners, that coupled with the grip , handling makes it very quick on fun roads. That coupled with serene mode makes it quite something special. Winter with it in Portugal and folks have clapped and cheered in all over. I don't think any other car can match it for such a range of experience. Once you been swathed in the carbon fibre and leather cockpit you won't want less. Fit and finish is fab.

History of Time Shift in BMW: - Time Sift has been around since 2015 BUT wasn't on by default. (was in my 2015 328i) - Smart Presets is a more recent feature (is in my 2019 X3) Your work keeps getting more and more fantastic!
You can buy one for $80k USD from 2015 on around 20k miles. Looks super cool. It’s like the perfect car to still be “daily” but not so crazy you keep it garaged 90% of the year.
These (the coupe version, anyway) are pretty common in Los Angeles, but they still make me turn my head. I think the i8 really sells the whole futuristic concept of electric vehicles and hybrids.
You guys should do a drop top test. I want to see how cool the convertibles look when dropping the top and putting it back up. Maybe you could see which is the coolest, which is the fastest and stuff like that. I think that would be very cool! Keep up the good work!
When I consider cool factor, I think about what would happen if I pulled up to my school in a car. Most people might give the NSX a glance, maybe start looking if I revved it. The i8 would have people flocking to it like moths to a lamp (had to throw that in there). So I think the i8 is cooler to non-car people, but the NSX is more respected by people who know it
The best thing about rewinding satellite radio (at least in my 2017 Pacifica) is when you switch channel it always starts at the beginning of the song. I rarely rewind manually but I unknowingly use it every day.

I don’t know how similar the engine to the one out of the Mini is, but I like it’s sound in the Mini. Sounds growly and sporty for a 3cyl. I also think it does fit the i8 quite well.
What even is the visor test? When you do it on most other cars and the visors don’t move, that’s a fail. Yet, when you do it in the i8, they didn’t budge and you called it a “pass”. This inconsistency is found in other videos as well. Please explain.
Awesome video as always, but I'd disagree with 0-100km/h in 2-3 seconds is a supercar territory. If we split cars into hypercars and supercars, it's a bit easier to classify i8 as supercar (otherwise being just on the edge, saved by those "Gullwing"(?!) doors) :)
I run on tires 275 in the rear and 245 in the front with Pilot sport 4s, and then I don't have under steer in the same way as before......... and BTW, the engine is not a modified engine from Mini. It was developed for BMW i8 and then later on used in Mini
You didn’t turn traction control off when you launched it. Made that mistake for the first month I owned it. After that tho it was so much fun. I was launching at every red light. Of course a plaid kicked my ass but I still got 0-60 sub 4 seconds
They shoulda put atleast a i4 engine instead of i3 or just remove the engine completely and add a way bigger battery. 30 miles electric is kind of a shame at this price point.
Wrong, it's a new segment I like to call performance hybrid. Cars in this list have to have at a minimum an electric propulsion system aiding the gas propulsion and a somewhat very loose sporty look and "feel" (electric aids numb traditional sporty feel). Cars in this list include the Honda CRZ, NSX, La Ferrari, Porsche 918, Mclaren P1, Ford GT, Lexus LC500 etc
I personally like the sound of it, it reminds me of the old Mitsu 3000GT!! Is it just me or is it that all the cars I think sound good no reviewer thinks sounds good??
Guys, love your video as always! I hate to say this but satellite radio, in my opinion, is old technology that is being replaced by streaming services like Spotify. You can rewind all you want and listen to exactly what you want. The future is here and it’s called Spotify!!! ;)

My 330i M Sport has the same steering wheel and paddles except for the squiggly thing. It’s not bad but that’s sort of odd. Actually my 330 has more options on it since this one was missing adaptive cruise
I had 3 months free on SiriusXM on a F32 BMW and I saw once this time machine feature to rewind the satellite radio. I also know about the presets, but I guess I didn't really care that much about it to actually set it up like this.

No not a prowler. I do like the Prowler but it sort of look like an old Dodge truck converted as a 2 door. The BMW in my opinion is not a supercar. There should be a new category cause with technology these days, lots of normal cars can go super quick

I think BMW should do an i8 S trim, similar to how they made an i3 S. The i8 S would have more aggressive styling, more power, and stiffer suspension. I think that would make it more of a rival to the NSX.

At 5'49" you claimed the car can go "120km in electric. If you mean that 120 km to be on battery, you're completely wrong. .To clarify, this car has a tiny battery, of which barely more than 5 kw/h is usable (roughly a third of a late-model Volt, to compare PHEVs or range -extended EVs). In reality this car can go about 25km (and non-highway at that) on the battery.

You guys should do a drop top test. I want to see how cool the convertibles look when dropping the top and putting it back up. Maybe you could see which is the coolest, which is the fastest and stuff like that. I think that would be very cool! Keep up the good work!

When I consider cool factor, I think about what would happen if I pulled up to my school in a car. Most people might give the NSX a glance, maybe start looking if I revved it. The i8 would have people flocking to it like moths to a lamp (had to throw that in there). So I think the i8 is cooler to non-car people, but the NSX is more respected by people who know it

The best thing about rewinding satellite radio (at least in my 2017 Pacifica) is when you switch channel it always starts at the beginning of the song. I rarely rewind manually but I unknowingly use it every day.
I don't really get the craziness of rewinding satellite radio. I don't listen to the radio anyway. I want to pick my own music.

I just picked up a 2018 Kia Rio. I thought rewinding satellite radio would be dumb. I do it all the time now. Super useful.
The reason nsx doesnt have e drive mode is due to to its f1 derived tech, kers regen power train, like the ferarri laferarri.
Nice touch with the subscribe on the car in the intro. My uncle used to have a yellow prowler, and looking back, I would say it was more of a hot rod than a supercar.

I don’t know how similar the engine to the one out of the Mini is, but I like it’s sound in the Mini. Sounds growly and sporty for a 3cyl. I also think it does fit the i8 quite well.

What even is the visor test? When you do it on most other cars and the visors don’t move, that’s a fail. Yet, when you do it in the i8, they didn’t budge and you called it a “pass”. This inconsistency is found in other videos as well. Please explain.

j hrk NSX more expensive, no rear seats (small ones still count), hybrid for performance and not fuel economy. They don’t compare well.
The 2014 i3 can rewind radio, but only the active channel, and you have to enable auto-rewind.
Awesome video as always, but I'd disagree with 0-100km/h in 2-3 seconds is a supercar territory. If we split cars into hypercars and supercars, it's a bit easier to classify i8 as supercar (otherwise being just on the edge, saved by those "Gullwing"(?!) doors) :)
A tune gets the 0-60 to 3.8
I run on tires 275 in the rear and 245 in the front with Pilot sport 4s, and then I don't have under steer in the same way as before......... and BTW, the engine is not a modified engine from Mini. It was developed for BMW i8 and then later on used in Mini

You didn’t turn traction control off when you launched it. Made that mistake for the first month I owned it. After that tho it was so much fun. I was launching at every red light. Of course a plaid kicked my ass but I still got 0-60 sub 4 seconds
They shoulda put atleast a i4 engine instead of i3 or just remove the engine completely and add a way bigger battery. 30 miles electric is kind of a shame at this price point.

Wrong, it's a new segment I like to call performance hybrid. Cars in this list have to have at a minimum an electric propulsion system aiding the gas propulsion and a somewhat very loose sporty look and "feel" (electric aids numb traditional sporty feel). Cars in this list include the Honda CRZ, NSX, La Ferrari, Porsche 918, Mclaren P1, Ford GT, Lexus LC500 etc
I personally like the sound of it, it reminds me of the old Mitsu 3000GT!! Is it just me or is it that all the cars I think sound good no reviewer thinks sounds good??

Guys, love your video as always! I hate to say this but satellite radio, in my opinion, is old technology that is being replaced by streaming services like Spotify. You can rewind all you want and listen to exactly what you want. The future is here and it’s called Spotify!!! ;)

My 330i M Sport has the same steering wheel and paddles except for the squiggly thing. It’s not bad but that’s sort of odd. Actually my 330 has more options on it since this one was missing adaptive cruise

I had 3 months free on SiriusXM on a F32 BMW and I saw once this time machine feature to rewind the satellite radio. I also know about the presets, but I guess I didn't really care that much about it to actually set it up like this.

No not a prowler. I do like the Prowler but it sort of look like an old Dodge truck converted as a 2 door. The BMW in my opinion is not a supercar. There should be a new category cause with technology these days, lots of normal cars can go super quick

I think BMW should do an i8 S trim, similar to how they made an i3 S. The i8 S would have more aggressive styling, more power, and stiffer suspension. I think that would make it more of a rival to the NSX.

At 5'49" you claimed the car can go "120km in electric. If you mean that 120 km to be on battery, you're completely wrong. .To clarify, this car has a tiny battery, of which barely more than 5 kw/h is usable (roughly a third of a late-model Volt, to compare PHEVs or range -extended EVs). In reality this car can go about 25km (and non-highway at that) on the battery.
