Hi Chris, it was definitely worth getting up in the middle of the night for this walk! It's uplifting to see such beautiful scenery. Hello there , that was a fun hike 👍😍 It's nice to feel lost in a vast place like that isn't it ? 😀 Thanks for sharing your adventure and wishing you a great weekend 👍🥰💕👋
Beautiful place to hike, Chris! I wish we had more rolling hills here like that with vistas. Unfortunately they are blocked by all of the trees! I may burn them all down, haven’t decided yet. 😂
I definitely prefer to hike open spaces than forests. My last three hikes were wooded areas, and I yearned for the vistas. It certainly was beautiful up there. Thank you for watching and commenting, Derrick. I really do appreciate it.
Hi Chris, absolutely amazing mate well done. What fabulous views. I did chuckle when you said you’d got beat by a pug and 3 kids! 🤣🤣🤣 Loved that mate, brilliant video. All the best mate Dave
@DAoutdoors it was the Pug that really rubbed it in. It was certainly a fantastic hike and one which I shall be returning to in the future for certain. Thank you, as always, for your support Dave.
Hi Chris! I wouldn't call a 6 mile hike a failure, I would call it a success! Just think of how far you have come in your hiking journey, it is truly impressive. The views on the hike were gorgeous. I think I have even heard of Pen Y Fan here in Minnesota. I hope you are having an awesome week! Take care. Anita. 😊👍
It was still great to get to the summit and back. Wow, I hadn't realised it was that well known. Yes, you are right, Anita. I have, but it was still disappointing. Thank you as always for your continued support. I really do appreciate it.
It is the first time I have ever hiked in Wales. If you stand looking at the phone box, there is a lay-by about 1/2 a mile to your right. The route from there is known as the motorway because most people take it. It is a more gradual climb with a better tended path. It depends on your wants/likes. It is a bit too busy for me. Too many people. I loved it so much that I'm out on Friday doing an 11 mile circular starting from the car park in Taf Fechan Forest. This one will keep me away from the tourists, especially with it being summer holidays. Plus, I get to do the ridge walk Horseshoe and take in Pen Y Fan from a different direction. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it. I hope you are having a great weekend.
@@chrisbentleywalkingandrambling we know exactly what you mean re. Motorway route. Like you we prefer the quieter routes. Thanks for the tip. If you are heading to Snowdonia at any time drop us a line, Tim & Selina
I wanted to go here last year but the weather was terrible, i would love to do some wild camping below the ridge itself, maybe next to the lake! Great tour hyping me up for next time!
@thetravellingwelshman Despite the weather I loved every minute of it. A fellow Welsh gent of yours does a lot of camping there. I think you'll love his channel. youtube.com/@jamieharding5?si=nZP_hFGeGMqaNwap
The classical phonebox 😅 i remember seeing a couple around here in Norway, none is in use I figure though. The views are astonishing, would it be acceptable to go by bike on those paths, or would that be found upon? Absolutely gorgeous weather too, so spectacular views. I too stop filming when I occasionally walk past people, feels rather awkward to film when they walk past 😅 Such places I could sit for hours on end and just look out the horizon. Rather crowded at the top 🙈 I would definitely not be comfortable filming there, kudos to you for doing that! 😁😁 Another splendid video Chris 😁 the footage was even nore beautiful than the pictures you sent 🥰
@RoamingSouthernNorway I have just looked it up, and mountain biking is not permitted in this area. Mind you, the speed some have passed me on other hikes, I'm actually glad. When I hiked on the D-Day 80km Challenge Hike, there were designated mountain bike tracks, though. The weather was beautiful. I'm glad I started very early as I missed the heat on the climb. I'm happy to vlog in front of others. They can give me a dirty look if they want.😂 Yes, the views were spectacular. They really were. Thank you, as always, Martin, for your support.
It was really beautiful. There is the way up I went, which was steep in places, and they have made a more gradual path for those who want a kinder hike. It was my first time up on Pen Y Fan, but it won't be my last. Thank you for all your support. I really do appreciate it.
Nice walk mate...nice and quiet up there...on our visit it was rammed, made Mam tor look quiet...Beards coming along nicely...Fancy getting beaten by a Pug !!!..Ha Ha.
The Pug passed me twice, too. It had had enough. On the way up, I fussed it. When it was on the way back down, I was sitting just soaking up the view. It jumped on my knee and refused to move until the owner picked it up. The right-hand track was tourist central. (The gently sloping one) The left-hand one from the telephone box was a lot quieter. You are right. It was starting to get like Mam Tor. Next time I go I think I'll sleep in the car. I started just after 6 a.m. so I beat most of the crowds and the heat going up. I just didn't have enough water to do the hike I wanted to do. I had planned an 11 mile loop. Next time, I'm taking my Sawyer Squeeze with me. I love the Peak District, but Pen Y Fan blew me away. It was beautiful. I like the beard, but Amanda says it makes me look old. I definitely need a haircut, though. Thank you, as always, for your support, Stephen, and have a great week.
Thank you for your continued support. I really appreciate it. I haven't seen a video off you for a while. I hope all is well. I'll jump over to your channel now to see my settings, but I have always watched your videos. Irregardless, you have a great weekend, and thank you again.
Hey Chris 😁 what a fantastic hike this looked! Some fab views at the top and it didn’t look too busy really considering that it is a popular one to do. Haha you are not alone Chris! I’ve been overtaken by a French bulldog before on a hike and it demotivated me so much at the time 😅 but I’m used to plenty of people overtaking me now on hikes. It’s never about how quick I do it though, just that I enjoy it. I always look at the positive and say taking my time means I just get to take those views in even more 😁 it’s a hot looking day to be hiking too. Nice to see the sheep and cows on the trail to. Fantastic effort on this one!
@yasminshikingmission I think the Pug was rubbing it in a bit by jumping on to my lap. I've come to the conclusion that I should do shorter hikes and take in the views more. I love the Peak District, but these views were out of this world. Seeing it first hand, I can see why you love the Lake District Yasmin. Thank you as always for your support.
Chris mate, you will have to get a couple of straws to stick out from the bottle tops with that water system of yours. 😀 Beautiful view min15 and 20. Yes it is sad regarding the filming of kids, not the country we both grew up in mate. I love my Merino wool socks. Mate you are of the same mind set as me when it comes to seeing people on your walks. Not been into the Brecon Beacons but think it has to be on my bucket list.
Absolutely. The fewer people I see, the better. I used double lined socks before, but the Merino Wool ones are a game changer. The country has changed for the worse, sadly. It was my first time hiking in Wales. It was a long 2 3/4hrs trip to get there. Not really a long way, just lots of windy roads and 30 or 50mph limits. I'll definitely be going back, but I'll do a route I've been shown, which is less touristy. The first time I did Alport Moor, I went from Derwent. It was a long 13 miles. I went across the swamp of doom the second time, which was a lot easier. I was at Bleaklow Stone at the start of June. It is beautiful out there. Saw no one until I got back on the Pennine Way. I need to get out again. My feet were itching watching your video. I think I'm going to get some smaller bottles. Once you got them out of the mesh holder they were impossible to get back in, but I definitely benefited from having them accessible. I'm going to take my Sawyer Squeeze out every time, just in case. Thank you as always for your support.
Well done Chris. You had perfect clear weather to see it all. It's a great feeling when complete something you set out to. It wouldn't have been easy in the heat. You made me laugh when you said even the pug beat me😂 You did well. It's one I've done so many times. I like the path you took (Storey Arms) it's harder but much quieter, it's funny you go up a mountain and then go down for a long while this way😂 The other way (motorway) is much easier slow incline all the way. Really nice to see you hiking this way👌👏👏 Keep up the good work. Really enjoyed it. You will sleep well tonight😂😂👏👏
@JamieHarding5 the motorway must be the one on the left as I was looking at it from the peak. It was too touristy for me. I cut right back across to the road less travelled. I started at 0615hrs, so the heat didn't hit me until the way back. The pug was as tired as me. 😂 I definitely need more water. Thank you as always for your continued Jamie.
@@chrisbentleywalkingandrambling No problem mate. That was a nice watch for me. I rushed up in March when we had snow, I've never been on any mountain like it was that day😂 seriously I was up Ben Nevis in October it blew someone over at the top 70mph winds. Pen y Fan that day wasn't happy with me, we had a battle😂 I was the only one on top. It changed quickly, i had to sit and wait a little bit before going back. It was blowing people back down, they were going down on their bums. I started where you do, oh we should see some snow, it got nasty quickly. I only did a 3-4 Minutes video. Have a look one day, you'll see what I mean. Have a look next week👍
Brilliant Chris not an easy route after a layup mate but (fair play to got superb views and enjoyed the hike 👌🏻🏔️🏴) How the soldiers do it against time in I not 😮 Enjoyed Best regards Simon 🤠👍🏔️
@SetForAdventures it does amaze me that they complete it in less than 4hrs 10mins. Hard core. The views were out of this world. Thank you as always for your support, Simon.
Have to say how much I admire your stamina and determination for doing challenging walks Chris. Have'vnt been to this part of Wales before. Hope you managed to drink plenty of water in the end. Certainly looked like you had good reminders with bottles on tap!. Nothing wrong with a shorter walk of 6 mile than the intended Pen-Y Fan route. Like you say the secret is plenty of stops on route and drinks. Landscape views looked stunning though, so looks like worth it.
It was a beautiful hike, Shanita. My next one will be longer in time and miles. I'm going to admire the scenery more and just take it in. I'll be taking my water filter and probably extra water. At least the pack will get lighter along the hike. Like you have said before. The camera doesn't do it justice. Thank you as always for your continued support, Shanita. I hope you and Michael gave had a great weekend.
That's an area I've driven through a couple of times, but never walked in. Doubt if I ever will now, but then again, life is too short to walk in all the areas we would like. Knowing when to cut a planned walk short, or to turn back, is one of the most important of mountain walking skills anyone can have.
It certainly is Michael. I wish I had started my hiking career earlier in life. There is nothing worse than hiking on a summers day without water. Not sensible at all. I'll be returning this week, all things being equal, to complete a different hike. At least I will be more prepared this time. Thank you as always for your support, and I hope both you and Shanita are having a wonderful weekend.
Well done Chris! Strong beard going on there! I remember your Facebook posts at 3am re this trip! It's a beautiful part of the world there, i referenced the SAS too on my video from the Brecon Beacons. Aside from the sheep (and kids and pug) you had a lot of alone time on this walk! I'm not sure I'd want those bottles of water next to my face like that, I'd find them distracting and annoying 😅bet you were knackered on the way home! Now Wales is done, time for a hike in Scotland? Maybe not a day trip though 😁
The bottles were a tad big. Pink Lemonade 990mls. They were the only thing I had to hand. I could put them in when the pack was off, but they were too big to put them in on the move. Hence, putting them upside down. I'm on the lookout for more appropriate ones. I want to take 4L with me next time. Plus, there is no real place to secure them, so they are anchored to the adjustment buckle. I wasn't too bad on the return. It was only 6 miles. The up was tough, but after that, it was fine. I'm planning another one around there, an 11 mile circular. Thank you as always for your support, Matt. I really appreciate it.
I have to admit, it is sometimes daunting to see how long the trail goes up on some treks. It always feels good getting up there, though 😊 I am always slow on trails, don't feel bad about the pug, they have 4 legs 😅 You made some nice friends along the way 😊 You made the right decision to cut it short. Hiking should be enjoyable 😉 always!
It is, isn't it? Miles and miles away in the distance. I do love the feeling when you finally summit a peak. There is a definite feeling of achievement. If only I had taken a water filter and toilet paper. But there was nowhere private to go. Next time I'll be better prepared. Thank you for your continued support. I really do appreciate it. Have a great week.
Just getting to watch this now. Great beard brother . Lovely introduction to sas stuff . That's inspiring. Superb .. still watching. That up at the start, with no warm up is tough. I know that type of climb . Are you wearing trousers in this one ? ..I can bet you felt good after this one.
I wear hiking trousers Owen with a zip off above the knee to expose my lilly white legs when needed. 'Soldier I' was my first book about the SAS. I have met Andy McNab and read most of his and Chris Ryan's books, so it felt more real hiking this in the footsteps of my favourite authors. Thank you again Owen. I really appreciate your support.
🥳🪨that hair and beard is getting long, eh, chris? 🤭 how far from home was this for you? you got up so early to drive here. i'm sure you weren't the only one sweating going up and down to see those incredible views! way to persevere chris. hydration is so important! sheep say no more singing! 😂might be hard to not compare yourself to others on the trail, but give yourself a break, "you'll get there." and you did... the hard way and then took it back again. 😅 your appreciation of the beauty really shone through in this one. have a lovely day! 🛴❤
It was just under three hours' drive each way. It isn't so much the milage to the hike. It is mostly back roads so you can't drive fast. It has sections at 30mph but most at 50mph with lots of windy roads. Even with going to bed early, I was still exhausted on the drive and had to pull over into the parking area for a 1/2hr power nap. I really should have done this going home, too, but I didn't. I think I'm due new glasses, (spectacles?), which would probably help with tiredness. I can sing any tune you want, just probably not in the right key 😂. I'm still getting around to my haircut. Amanda is having balance issues again, sadly. She cuts my hair. I prefer a zero cut. As for the beard, I quite like it, but Amanda says it makes me look old. It is probably destined to come off as well. You are right. I am comparing myself to people who are probably 40 years younger than me. But I can't say that for the Pug. 😂. I really enjoyed this hike. It was the first time I had ever hiked a Welsh peak, and this was a special one for the reasons stated. Andy McNab, who is ex SAS, visited the prison I worked in. I was too shy to talk to him. I just wanted an autograph. I am in awe of the SAS and their achievements. So Amanda said, 'I'll get you an autograph'. She went to the room he was in and asked for a kiss and an autograph. She got both. I know it's only his signature, but it is a link to a person. I have read all his books, and when the Iraq war was on, I was sat on frequency scanning for Iraqi transmissions. So, although my links to this war are tenuous at best, I was sat on an intercept position in Somerset England trying to find Iraqi comms. I worked for GCHQ at that time, which is our equivalent of your NSA. I've had a strange life.😂
@@chrisbentleywalkingandrambling i am so sorry to hear amanda is having a rough go again. sending healing your way! and i would say an interesting life indeed!
Crikey Chris… I’ve walked that many times and it was my first proper walk at age 13. I took my youngest up the walk last year. Great views. I’d have joined you had I known.
Martyn, you are more than welcome to join me on any hike. Next time I go there, it will be an 11.24 mile circular hike with a water filter and MRE. Starting off pre dawn and cooking breakfast on Pen Y Fan, then a turnaround point, or furthest of the circular hike, would be Pont Y Llwyn. Then back past Graig Fan Ddu. I'm planning it for next month now. Thank you for watching and commenting. Have you hit the subscribe button? Thanks again Martyn.
@@chrisbentleywalkingandrambling I’ll message you in Private old chum. Pen Y Fan always needs an early start these days. It gets very busy. Always amazes me that hardly anyone goes up Fan Fawr on the opposite side of the A470. Great walks that side too. Enjoy those hills. Playground of my youth. 😎👍
@martynwedlake9273 I talked to a guy who had been up that side the day before. He said it was lush green but very boggy. I have no experience in this area, so it could have been BS.
@@chrisbentleywalkingandrambling Depends which route you take up, but yes boggy at the start as I remember but fine afterwards. Wilder though, not as well trodden. I’m pretty sure there used to be a challenge on walking all the “Fan” hills on that side. 🤔 Check out the Mountain Centre for a cup of tea and a slice of cake afterwards. Splendid views, maps, advice. Even a memorial plaque to my old teacher who introduced to the hills, caves, and rock climbing of the Beacons. 👍
We have a climb here in Wicklow that over looks a love heart shaped lake. This walk reminds me of that hike . The views revealing themselves just when you need them . . You can get your fitness back . Three litres is so much weight to bring . You monstered this for your fitness Chris. I think you should stop giving yourself a hard time for the speed . . What matters is the altitude gain . The lungs after the climb feel great. . Hope you are enjoying the after effects 886 m ❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥
I just feel disappointed in myself when I have to modify or curtail a hike, Owen. This was water and a lack of bog roll. I'm definitely coming back with a water filter and MRE for a longer day. Normal speed is 2 mph, but this was 1.2 mph. But you know what, Owen, I really enjoyed the slower pace and taking all the beautiful views in. Thank you as always for your continued support, Owen. I really do appreciate it.
@lifesahobby do you have a video with vistas over the heart-shaped lake, Owen? Congratulations again on the bow saw fire. I knew you would get it. That triumphant YESSS!!! as it lit said it all.

Hello there , that was a fun hike 👍😍 It's nice to feel lost in a vast place like that isn't it ? 😀 Thanks for sharing your adventure and wishing you a great weekend 👍🥰💕👋
It certainly was a beautiful hike. Thank you so much for your continued support. Have a great weekend.
Beautiful view thank you

Hi Chris, absolutely amazing mate well done. What fabulous views. I did chuckle when you said you’d got beat by a pug and 3 kids! 🤣🤣🤣
Loved that mate, brilliant video.

Great hike Chris, amazing views, shame about the bigger circular, nice one mate.
@hiking57 it is definitely one to revisit with my water filter and a longer day. Thank you as always for your support, David.
Looks like a great walk. Not an area that we’ve been to (yet!) but with the views you had it’s on now on our list. Thanks for taking us along.

@thetravellingwelshman
Despite the weather I loved every minute of it.
I too stop filming when I occasionally walk past people, feels rather awkward to film when they walk past 😅
Such places I could sit for hours on end and just look out the horizon.
Great video Chris, amazing views definitely need to get up there myself 😊

You made me laugh when you said even the pug beat me😂
You did well.
It's one I've done so many times.
I like the path you took (Storey Arms) it's harder but much quieter, it's funny you go up a mountain and then go down for a long while this way😂
The other way (motorway) is much easier slow incline all the way.
Really nice to see you hiking this way👌👏👏
Keep up the good work.

No problem mate.
That was a nice watch for me.
I rushed up in March when we had snow, I've never been on any mountain like it was that day😂 seriously
I was up Ben Nevis in October it blew someone over at the top 70mph winds.
Pen y Fan that day wasn't happy with me, we had a battle😂
I was the only one on top.
Great video 🙂👍

What happened with the cows? The video cut off😁
It's certainly beautiful out there😍
Great day out hiking!
I wanted to give them my full attention just in case. Turns out they were really docile. Thanks Age, have a great week.
@@chrisbentleywalkingandrambling that's good that they weren't ornery that day😁
I have to admit, it is sometimes daunting to see how long the trail goes up on some treks.

@@chrisbentleywalkingandrambling
Depends which route you take up, but yes boggy at the start as I remember but fine afterwards. Wilder though, not as well trodden. I’m pretty sure there used to be a challenge on walking all the “Fan” hills on that side. 🤔
Check out the Mountain Centre for a cup of tea and a slice of cake afterwards. Splendid views, maps, advice. Even a memorial plaque to my old teacher who introduced to the hills, caves, and rock climbing of the Beacons. 👍
What a place to hike. Interesting there’s no trees on the mountains
It is very barren. Thank you for watching and commenting I really appreciate it.
The lungs after the climb feel great. .
Hope you are enjoying the after effects
