  • Why are some Red Texas red and others not? How does a RT change colors? How do I know if my RT is really fading?
Here is some information on how a red Texas goes from a standard black body to a bright orange/red

I just dove into the Red Texas pool today. Ive been keeping fish ( all types fresh ) for about 45 yrs now. Ive been building plywood aquariums for the past 8 yrs or so. I have a 450g tank with community Southies and a 300g with semi/agressive South and Centrals that got a Red Texas added today. I watched your video, hoping to learn about when red would appear. The fish is about 2 3/4" and a grayish color. It has some pearling, evenly spaced throughout body and fins. No signs of dark or red yet. However, today is 1st day in tank, so its still settling. It has a great appetite already. Its with 3"-5" Cuban and Vieja and GT and Jack Dempseys and Firemouths and Salvini and Convict with 60+ fry. So, its busy in the 300g right now. Ive watched several of your videos and sub'd.. I ask if you could share any insight and sub me and check out my builds. Thanks in advance.

By looking at your tanks I see you use sponge filters. Is that all you need with weekly water changes? I have a flowerhorn in a 90 gallon with two sponges. They are rated for 60 gallon each. Do you think that is all I need for filters as long as I do my water changes?

Once i crossed a 4-5 inch blood parrot with a 4-5 inch male blue texas that i caught in the canal by my house in louisiana. out of about 150 fry maybe 8-10 were orange with pearls by 2-3 inches. But then i moved and had to sell all my fish. I really want to try breeding them again. It was super intresting watching them change color as they grew. At the same time i also had fry from that same male texas crossed with a female flowerhorn and some flowerhornXflowerhorn fry. They all looked pretty similar for a while but at about 1.5 inches you could start to tell the differences.

I have one that has good pearling but no red yet. He/she is about three inches and I can see red in the fins but not the body yet, I hope he has some red because his pearls are beautiful...

Is this the same fading you talked about the faders on the flowerhorns?

Hi Dan, I have a 5” size partially faded red texas, is there something that can be done to get the best out of it

I thought the Red Texas was originally a Midas or Red Devil cichlid with a Rio Grande Cichlid or similarly related species. I imagine the Red parrot was a later mix, but I guess they have similar parentage that it could go either way.
