Totally agree. We're going about this from the wrong angle. Instead of trying to build in so much range with big batteries and the mining nightmares of trying to get materials for batteries, we need to up the infrastructure to include incremental charging while we shop, dine, visit friends and families or whenever and wherever the car is stationary it could be charging.
Computer and cell phone charging anxiety are enough. I'll stick with infrequent visits to gas stations in my Lexus ES 300h hybrid and 500 mile range, 40-45 MPG per tank.with its internal combustion engine and self charging battery.
I'm honestly curious how well Lexus' battery will do since it is a smaller low range battery. It has only about 220 miles of range but the question is how long of a range will both the Lexus and Tesla have after 3 years of use. Not to mention, Lexus is the ONLY manufacturer offering a "Vehicle Loaner Plan" for RZ owners.
Great video and I agree with your observations. The night before I bought my Lexus RZ450e I seriously considered the Tesla model Y. I had test driven it as well as the Lexus. In the end I chose the Lexus because it seemed like the perfect car for me. I love Tesla, but the Lexus was just more luxurous inside compared to the stark Tesla cabin. My wife also has a gas Lexus, which we would take on long trips. once the Lexus Reserve program runs out in three years. I spend 98% of my time driving around town and charge my car about once a week on a home charger. In my opinion, no electric cars are convenient for long trips when compared to a gas or hybrid car. When solid state batteries come out, that should be a "game changer".
Let's get a bit technical. The equivalent battery size for both models. Lexus/Toyota gets 30-40% less range. That's pure lack of efficiency and poor engineering. You could have a Lexus interior but a poorly executed EV or an excellently executed EV but a minimalist interior.
It's engineering priorities that I think a lot of people aren't seeing. Beyond range, let's look at some other things. They didn't talk about it but that variable steer by wire is solid engineering. And as far as minimalist interior goes, how is it better to keep looking at a big table display over having a judicious mix of buttons and use the display to further execute things? And on the S/X, the yoke steering is poorly executed in terms of where they moved the turn signals and placed the horn especially. Who says an EV has to be all about battery efficiency? Granted, that's some of it but what about how well it damps out sound since there is no engine? That's what an owner experiences on a daily basis. Shouldn't Lexus be credited for that? It's rather one dimensional, IMO, to talk of what the Lexus doesn't do particularly well without acknowledging what they're doing better on the EV front with this model. I also find the radiant heating to be something significant to bring into the EV space.
Believe they mentioned all of those positives, but they can’t not talk about the shortcomings of the Toyota… I mean 190 miles epa est range is terrible. So 150 real world perfect conditions and I’m worst conditions maybe 90 miles…
All these vs Tesla Model 3 or Y, should be really retitled to “Can it live up to” instead. Tesla did a fine job setting a standard. Now everyone is trying to make similar vehicle to the model 3 or Y, well maybe with the exception to the ID Buzz, as that one is a Van.
Just drop the vs. Tesla stuff. Believe it or not, some people couldn't care less about any new EV vs. Tesla. I'd rather just hear about the Lexus on its own merits. Lexus has a small, target market for this vehicle. How well does it work for them reveals whether Lexus succeeded or not.
Still love the Tesla. It's so much better. I can understand the interior critiques, but I like the minimalism. I'm not a fan of the ceo, but I am proud to proclaim that the best EVs are made here in America.
Charging infrastructure is not a valid point everywhere. There is ZERO Tesla chargers in my country, Estonia, EU. Also You will be charging at home here, since quick-chargers here is 6-10 times more expensive than home charging and will make you pay as you would have with a petrol car… Range, in my experience everyone lies. The best I had with Tesla in the city is 13,4 kw/100 km and with full spec RZ i got 16,7 which is not far off, considering AWD, Tesla Model 3 was RWD. Full one pedal driving would be cool but not a dealbreaker for me. What is a dealbreaker is waiting period of 24 months for the Lexus though.
This is not a fair comparison. Tesla is just an overall advanced next generation vehicle. Here is something not mentioned. Dealing with salesman at a car dealership is a NIGHTMARE. My neighborhood Lexus is charging $10K additional on top of inflated price of $67K. And also not mentioned, the sentry mode, the app to control all the features, the autopilot tech that is so easy to use in Tesla, ordering process, the outdated glitchy software with Lexus. Yes Tesla had issues with the quality, but looking at 22 and 23 models, those issues are gone.
As a huge Lexus fan and twice owner of the RX350, I have long been anticipating the arrival of their E-model. After watching a number of YT videos, including this one, I can safely say that Lexus has a long way to go. I believe it will get there, but I'm guessing that's at least 5 years away.
I enjoyed this duo's review! I do wish Edmunds would dial back the rat-ta-tat scripts a bit more though. And it was weird to hear them laud the ride quality as taking "everything LA can throw at you" while obviously on a smoothly-paved, well-maintained, private test track.
They're probably showing the footage from the track and drove the car out in the real world. I'd rather see the car driven over bad roads and hear what it sounds like going over them than seeing a car on an empty test track.
Lexus should just up the battery warranty to 90% capacity and show other manufacturers how its battery management prioritizes longevity over driving range.
I traded in my 2016 Lexus RX 450h F-Sport for my 2022 Tesla Model Y Performance. I miss the bird's eye view camera feature, the softer ride of the Lexus, and the premium build quality of the Lexus. But that's where the list ends. My Tesla still feels very well built, just not as refined as the Lexus. The Tesla is smaller in size overall but still feels much roomier than my Lexus did. SIGNIFICANTLY more storage space in the Model Y than my RX had. Then there's performance. Bolting off the line at a stop light never gets old. The response time and acceleration of my Tesla is superb. My Lexus did 0-60 in about 7 seconds whereas my Tesla does it in about half the time. I was very intrigued by the RZ when I first heard about it but when I heard about the range... that was a huge deal breaker for me. Extremely disappointing to have such a poor range in such an expensive car. Tesla feels futuristic with its minimalist design whereas the Lexus feels entirely more traditional. Tesla is bold and risk-taking while Lexus seems to have played it extremely safe with the RZ. The RZ is definitely for a different market than what the Model Y shoots for. Lexus has always been my favorite brand... but at this point, Tesla has won me over with its ingenuity, performance, and range. And don't get me started on the sound system. My Model Y has BY FAR the best stock sound system I've ever had. Mark Levinson who???
I have the exact both of your cars too, and I like the Model Y more because of the driving dynamics, sound system, and the frunk and rear-under trunk spaces.
@@ThomasLau0120 But man do I miss that birds-eye-view camera to help with parking in tight spaces. It's a travesty that Tesla doesn't yet have that. My 7 year old Lexus had it. Rather pathetic on Tesla's part in that regard.
Mark Levinson is top tier. Tesla is not beating it. The only thing I've head that knocks ML out is the Bowers and Wilkins in Volvos. Im a audio junkie and have heard them all. Niam by Bentley, is in a league of it's own.
The poor efficiency combined with slow charging is not good, but throw in the ultra short range and it's a very poor choice. If it cold gates like the bz4x, it's a major flaw. I like the yoke steering tech ( not tested) and radiant heaters though.
Don’t forget that you can buy the speed boost on the long range and bring it down to 4.3 I believe. You can make it faster for 2k and it would still be cheaper than the Lexus.
Clint!? When did you move to Edmunds? I guess this means you also moved coast too…. It’s been a while since I saw you on a car review video. Good to see you back online.
What's with the boy racer acceleration silliness? Sorry guys but let's show the car the way most people drive them in normal driving conditions. This Lexus, IMO, has an executive jet vibe about it yet it still uses understated, sustainable materials. I want real useful things put back in cars over bling and gimmicks and it delivers with a more efficient steering system coming and radiant heating that helps warm occupants and helps the HVAC system. It doesn't have that screen-dominant set up like most BEVs and that's a breath of fresh air. Beyond that, it's a Lexus and that's important to me .About range, I think range is overrated. This isn't any type of road trip car. But around town the way most BEVs are used, it's usable range. Model Y isn't even in the running. Great EV and such but the overall refinement is much lower than Lexus. Genesis, Cadillac, upcoming Volvo and Polestar, they're in the running. I don't regard the 3 or Y as premium cars. The S and X, yes, but not the 3 and Y.
Lighten up. Have some fun. They did a good job with the review. So why be so out of shape because they appreciate the acceleration that EV’s are accustomed to?
Everyone know Tesla is better than the Lexus is in EV not ICE is a different ball game lol. We can talked about drive all day. Lexus was not designed ground up but rather ICE platform. It just sucks. And yes I have own several Lexus but when it comes to EV they ass
Range is still very important to most EV buyers, and while it doesn’t need to be a massive Lucid-like figure in every EV out there, barely managing 200 miles in a fresh 2023 EV is a huge demerit.
@@Mabeylater293 OK, you're right in a sense. It's just in the real world, who is brake torquing their cars to go 0-60? And when you do that, what happens to your range? Most Teslas I see are driven moderately. I guess there are people driving Teslas fast somewhere but I don't see many of them. I see some taking corners fast but mostly I see Teslas cruising at near the speed limit on the highway. So, this whole emphasis on acceleration that not only was done here, but is done by so many reviewers has just gotten old. When I drive BEVs, I'm into the quietness of the propulsion more than anything else. I hope we get to the point where we talk about EVs as cars. That's what they are. Now we're more talking about them as the novelty of the acceleration and their range. But I don't know a lot of people that drive muscle cars, v8 or v12 luxury cars, that care about gas mileage. They'll tell you about the performance in muscle cars and the smooth power of the V8 or V12. People in economy cars care about range and economy so why do we hear about for so much money it should have so much range and not should behave like a car for the money you pay for it whether it is in luxury, refinement or sports performance? So a lot needs to be done in the charging world where people just don't care about range and they'll just power up anywhere when need be. We are a long way from there.
We love the GV60, but it’s significantly smaller than the RZ and still has limited availability across the country. The Model Y feels like a more direct competitor for the time being.
@@edmundscars Yes and no. The Y is hard to compare because it doesn't match the luxury/refinement of the Lexus, Genesis, and similar marques yet it has more performance and tech than most others, hence it's put in a higher category. But, as a car, it's more comparable to mainstream cars vs. a premium one.
$10K price difference not even factoring federal rebate $7500. How does it even compare? RZ is just too much for so little and good luck getting the dealer $5-10k markup because they don’t make enough to even sell the Lexus fans.
Lauren you said you like buttons to control the heat, volume, etc.. and that it's very distracting to do that on the central screen of the Tesla, but did you even try the voice command on the Tesla to do all of that. The voice command does a lot of things you know!
The self driving, sentry mode, dashcam , the better resolution infotainment screen, the ability to watch netflix, TH-cam in full HD anywhere in the tesla are an overkill.
You’re going to want to charge EVs at home (or any EV really) Good luck doing road tips in the winter in the Lexus tesla has better: range, charging, performance, tech, storage. Lexus has better comfort and is more expensive. You do the math
We don’t care too much about interior if the car isn’t efficient. Electric vehicles first and most important purpose should be efficiency, range and charging speed matters most. Which is why tesla still has an edge over it’s so called competitors.
Tesla owner here, I know you mention that you like buttons, and thought it to be easier and less distracting because of familiarity with placement. However, you can control climate and virtually everything in the car with voice command which means you never take your eyes off the road. It takes a little time to learn it, but once you do, it is much less distracting than having to take your eyes off the road and reach for buttons.
@@edmundscars your number one priority is eyes on the road and voice allows you to maintain that. I typically wait for a pause in said conversation instead of interrupting. When I do use voice, it typically starts a conversation as to “how cool” it is that Teslas do it so well. Besides, the moment you search for buttons you’re already out of your conversation or away from your music and have become a distracted driver.
before watching - so based on what I know about both vehicles I would say that Lexus built the better vehicle, thanks to things like a better interior more logical infotainment, and probably much better driving experience (that one I don't know for sure). However, I would bet Lexus did not build the the better Electric Vehicle; thanks to the lower range, worse charging times, and probably some "first BEV teething issues". interested to see if you agree.
@@VAspeed3 don't suppose you have an actually reliable source on that. Even if they are, it's a limited run of an all new platform. This model pays for the next one.
Can't compete with Lexus luxury and reliability. Who cares about that extra 80 miles for those of us doing daily short drives. Y'all forget to mention that Lexus offers the Reserve program where you can borrow a loaner car from your selling dealer for free to take that long trip you might want to take to Vegas, Arizona, Washington. It doesn't matter, you get 30 days to use in the first 3 years. That's what I do whenever I go to Vegas, no anxiety for me. And, I usually take a hybrid which can give me 33mpg on the new RX hybrid model, 39mpg on the NX model or 45mpg on the ES model 👍
Hmmm, and I thought those ears on the Lexus were to eliminate the back wiper. For me it is the Lexus quality over the poor workmanship of the Tesla body.
Tesla all day. Not a question. Less expensive, more features, better performance, more reliability for an EV drivetrain, better charging network, better UI, way better app support.
Tesla changed the Model Y suspension in late Q4 2022 - beefier control arm (can’t remember which one) and new shocks. I hated the ride quality when I test drove a 2021 model Y Long Range. I’m trying to find some reviews that focus specifically on that change
It's even worse now that the Model Y LR can be had for under 50k and you get rebates, which brings it down to between 37.5-42.k depending on your state.
Imo button sucks, at least 80% of button are not being used where as centralized touch screen is more manageable. Tesla infotainment is super fun packed with games and favorite apps. Do people use button phones anymore?
Why does everyone complain about buttons, look at your phone…no buttons!!! Also the motion to turn the a/c or volume is the same, swipe up and choose, or you can just talk to it and it will do it.
In what way would be the question. Smooth ride and luxurious interior then Lexus. But fast , fun and excellent cornering, safety and amazing technology then model Y. If You are just comparing the ride quality alone and say Lexus is better then yeah it would be better. It’s like saying a sporty Mercedes amg is not as good as Lexus rx because it’s not as smooth as rx.for those who wants a quite and smooth ride then Lexus will be best.
A sporty Mercedes still has a compliant ride quality. There's no comparing it to the not so good ride in a Model Y. Lexus can also make a sporty crossover if they want to but most of their customers and customers in this segment don't prefer that. Sportier Lexus EVs are in the works, however.
@@benjaminsmith2287 I am not comparing model y vs AMG. Just giving an example. I have owned mode y performance past 2+ years. I don’t have any complaints with the ride. It’s not as good as a GLE or RX. But definitely not as bad as everyone say. I am not sure if everyone complains actually drove the Y or maybe they are just tesla haters. I do conclude if only smooth ride is what You want then yes it’s better to go for Lexus.
Busy is not luxury. There was an incorrect statement in the video. Tesla EVs do have the ability to link to your phone for determining your destination. In this video they seem to also have left out the fact that with a Tesla, a driver can just walk up to the car, get in, push on the brake and go. When I am done I just get out of the car and close the door. The Tesla will put the car in park, go to sleep, lock the car, and close any windows that may be open. Lexus like most other cars on the road make these so much more complicated. My Tesla even sets up the seats, steering wheel, miriors, comfort control, audio, and driving preferences to the way I had them the last time I drove the car.
So many Telsla users out there since the beginning of Tesla, can any of you comment here how are you expecting the battery performance after number of years of use ?
A Tesla is an expensive vehicle, but not a luxury vehicle. There is nothing luxurious about a Tesla. They are content heavy, standard vehicles. Think of a fully loaded base Camry. It really seems like Teslas are branded as luxury for their price point instead of content. A Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-e aren't considered luxury and they are priced similarly.
The S and X are kind of luxurious. They actually ride reasonably well and are fairly quiet. The 3 and Y aren't close to luxury or even premium. The Y particularly has a rough, unsettled ride and both the 3 and Y make unrefined noises that don't even exist in mainstream cars like Ioniq 5 and such. Tesla can be branded as a high tech performance cars and you pay for the tech so they're their own category. Rivian and Lucid are lux cars at this point, however.,
@@benjaminsmith2287 I would agree that Lucids are luxury vehicles but not Rivian. Rivian is high end but again, not luxurious. And while the Model S and X are more luxurious than the 3 & Y, they still aren't luxury vehicles. They don't really compare to Mercedes Benz, BMW or Jaguar, Luxury is about content and feel. Nothing Tesla makes really reaches that level. Don't get me wrong, Tesla is a technology tour de force where the other manufacturers have really missed that part. And try a recent Model 3 or Y. The ride and quality have improved.
I favor Toyotas and Lexus generally. And i TRUST them. I don’t really Trust Tesla. I WANTED to buy a Lexus EV and waited and waited. But they are slow in catching up to Lexus at the same price point. I couldn’t wait any longer. But Elons complete rethinking of what a “car” is - is undeniably well designed. I bought Model Y. If Lexus catches up i’d be willing to pay a bit more next time for a TRUSTY japanese luxury car. Win me over next time , LEXUS!
The Tesla is the best EV around and one of the worst build cars around. In my opinion the Tesla is also beyond ugly, inside and out. Tesla is a hype, like Apple, very good marketing, impressive visionair as boss, Elon Musk, the recipe for suc6. The RZ is based on the bz4x, an average EV platform but with a few software updates, now a good EV with good range, good charging, very efficient ev motors as well. The RZ will have these updates later this year. I have to say, the 320km range would be enough for me and I would choose the RZ anytime above a Tesla....
I have been driving this car for 2 months. I give it a 2 stars. The range totally sucks. The people working at the dealerships know nothing about the car which makes it worse. I would NOT recommend this car. It’s definitely not for people that do a lot of freeway driving.
I am a Lexus fan and own couple of Lexus before, but I choose Tesla Model Y performance this time when shopping my next SUV over Lexus (either this RZ or RX 350 H / 500h ) . Tesla technology is way ahead of Lexus or other traditional car brands, 2023 model even in the performance model riding quality is quite good as well compare to Lexus F Sport.

YES, Tesla uses smaller 75kwh battery and gets over 300+ miles.
Lexus/Toyota/Soultera all need 90 kwh to even get 300 miles.
I also find the radiant heating to be something significant to bring into the EV space.

th-cam.com/video/BiWbdMFjORw/w-d-xo.html
@@benjaminsmith2287 Every EV is working to be as good as the MY, the most sold vehicle in the world, last year!!!
Haha I thought it was weird lol
I agree. I enjoy some energy and enthusiasm but could be dialed back a bit and be less scripted, cringy, awkward.
If I could sum up the vibe of this in three short words, it would be " milk is spicy".
They were working too hard to be cute, but a more concise and professional one may be better
@@mpetrie you could use both of the side cameras for parking tho.
@@ThomasLau0120 I do... but it's just not the same or as convenient.
Awesome review. Great chemistry between these two...look forward to seeing them on more episodes.
I feel the same. I’ve driven the Y three times. Can’t stand the awful noisy ride.
You two have great chemistry.
Thanks for an honest review. Finally, a review from someone that isn't waiting for tesla stock to go up.
How does luxury not mean quiet?? Isolation defines luxury.
A Genesis GV60 versus Lexus RZ would have been a more appropriate comparison.
Lexus EVs known for massive range, info technology and acceleration!😊
LEXUS ❤👍🏻
$10K price difference not even factoring federal rebate $7500. How does it even compare? RZ is just too much for so little and good luck getting the dealer $5-10k markup because they don’t make enough to even sell the Lexus fans.
Thanks
Lexus has a $15K REBATE ON THE LEASE. MUCH MORE COMPETITIVE.
Lauren you said you like buttons to control the heat, volume, etc.. and that it's very distracting to do that on the central screen of the Tesla, but did you even try the voice command on the Tesla to do all of that. The voice command does a lot of things you know!
This lady exudes class in her dress!!!!! Luv it !!!
Lexus all the way 😊
without the charging network, the charging problem for RZ is just such a pain in the ass when you make road trips.
After owning a Tesla, I will never own one ever again. My 1992 Lexus has been the one saving me everytime the junkbox has had problems.
The self driving, sentry mode, dashcam , the better resolution infotainment screen, the ability to watch netflix, TH-cam in full HD anywhere in the tesla are an overkill.
Welcome to Edmunds Clint!!!
You’re going to want to charge EVs at home (or any EV really) Good luck doing road tips in the winter in the Lexus
tesla has better: range, charging, performance, tech, storage. Lexus has better comfort and is more expensive. You do the math
3:25 Those cat ears actually provide downforce AND gets rid of need for a wiper since the force of wind will “should” push those rains off.
Ohhh interesting 🤨 because my old 2008 Lexus Rx-350 had Rear wipers
That's what I read too, the engineering on this is insane. Looking forward to hearing people's real life situations.
Sure, but you shouldn’t have to interrupt a conversation you’re having or pause the music/podcast you’re listening to just to adjust simple controls.
6:08 it's a Lexus, that is one of the things they do best.
okay so we were basically in agreement.
@@roguedogx we are with you!
And Toyota lost about $20,000 selling that Lexus and maybe much more.
I don’t care about the cars. I just loved you guys.
Wow both of them were great well done!
Hmmm, and I thought those ears on the Lexus were to eliminate the back wiper. For me it is the Lexus quality over the poor workmanship of the Tesla body.
Range and one pedal driving is HUGE!!
Tesla all day. Not a question. Less expensive, more features, better performance, more reliability for an EV drivetrain, better charging network, better UI, way better app support.
Great video.. Is it more quiet than other ev's or just compared to ice cars?.. Keep it up.
Lexus Interior/Comfort + Tesla Exterior/Drivetrain - Elon = Great Car
LOL someone make this happen
Personally I like the tesla since it’s a more simple design. Also the tesla model 3 is cheaper. And the small little features on it makes it a fun car
For me Model Y is the best car i ever had.
I just got Y model .. how are you liking your still ?
After the $7500 tax credit, model Y is $39,500 vs Lexus NX's $59,000 starting price which you can't find anywhere in the US..........
The most interesting comparison
I picked my ev6 gt over both of these two but if I had to pick I would take the lexus. You can't give me a model y

Also the motion to turn the a/c or volume is the same, swipe up and choose, or you can just talk to it and it will do it.
Question is. Is there enough charger station
I LOVE HER VIBE OMGG
These are a few of my favorite things! 😁
You guys are really cute together. However, Thank you so much for this comparison.
So many Telsla users out there since the beginning of Tesla, can any of you comment here how are you expecting the battery performance after number of years of use ?
How about a RZ 450 ice, that would really cool.
I would put the Tesla battery on Lexus and make the best option...Lexus has the look durability but Tesla has the long range capability....
18" wheel you'll get 220 mile range 😊
I may sound creepy, but I like this girl voice mixing with Tesla, Technology and Lexus smooth drive.

I am so against one pedal driving. But having choice is nice.
It is so, so much better than using both pedals; it makes driving all other cars feel irritating.

Tesla is much more luxury than Lexus, Software is more important to me and Tesla is best at it
Tesla is simply not more luxury. The Model Y does not have a luxury interior.
The Model Y is minimalistic which appeals to millions of customers.
Tesla, no question
The only place where the Tesla has an edge is in range and charging speed. The Lexus has superior build quality, durability and reliability. The Lexus ride quality is also better and the interior is leagues ahead.
@@electrikoptik + price, cabin/cargo storage space, and outward visibility.
