      I have sold the bike in the meantime, though to admit. Just wasn’t as off-road capable as I liked. So I got a Honda CRF300L to replace the 310GS. So much lighter and more manageable, even though slightly higher, but it squats down a lot, so it’s lower or at least the same height than the GS while riding it! Much MUCH more fun bike overall for my uses, which was mostly unpaved roads and dirt. I don’t feel too safe on a bike on the public roads so I try to avoid them when I can.

    I started on a DRZ SM and if I had to do it again I'd start on a DRZ SM (and keep it this time). I wanted a Ninja 650, but my moto mentor said, "You'll thank me the first time you drop it, it isn't a mangled mess and you're able to ride it home." I did exactly that three months later. It was also a lot of fun in big city traffic and I could actually flick through all the gears without blatantly breaking the law (unlike my next bike, a GSXR 750).

Ended up buying a 600cc, it was fun for a bit, learned wheelies and played around but was always longing for more. Now I’m at a 2021 R1 and it doesn’t disappoint. The evening I got my permit I hightailed it down to San Diego. Bad idea with the stock seat; but I did it repeatedly.Rode that beast 10,0o0 miles a year for 3 years from Death Valley to 9,000 feetno problem - it was jetted for altitude -. Don’t discount old, but serviceable bikes. picked up an ‘83 Suzuki GS650 GL that’s still a joy to ride a few years ago for just $1500.

    I have watched dozens of your videos and clearly what passes for a 'good bike', 'beginner bike', 'city bike', 'highway bike' or 'dirt bike' in Texas (and obviously the rest of the US) is not always the best choice for other countries. Beginners where I live (and most of the rest of the world) are restricted to much lower powered bikes and most litre+ bikes are simply too fast to be of any practical use where speed limits are actively policed and are often around the 100 km/h (60 MPH for those who can't do the maths) and that's on the highway, city and town riding is often 50 km/h or less. I understand your audience is mostly US based, but bikes like to Enfield are solid choices as a fun, easy to ride multi purpose bike in many countries. PS, big capacity dirt bikes have always done it for me as a road bike, I have had a road kitted YZ490, and both an XR 500 and 650, you can't have more fun with your pants on!.

      That must be a Europe thing? Here in Canada we also don't have stupid beginner bike rules thankfully! I like to have enough torque to move from a dangerous situation not get crushed while screaming redline on a cool looking scooter myself.

    • @IparanoiaZ
      @IparanoiaZ ปีที่แล้ว +5

      We don't have beginner bike rules or laws or anything. The motorcycle community took notice to beginners killing themselves on bikes because they have no throttle control and yank the throttle when doing almost everything. Lower powered bikes are more forgiving as they aren't as powerful and take off relatively slow and don't have a very high speed they can reach. So for others safety they make lists for learner bikes for new riders because Americans love learning on TH-cam which isn't a bad thing. Instead of asking a random who rides a BMW s1000rr and he guides you to a bike not so beginner friendly as he was being sarcastic now you have no legs.. lol its just something we do to look out for eachother :)

    • @mikkoolavijarvinen3653
      @mikkoolavijarvinen3653 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Europe, at least in many countries, that's just "young beginners". 24 or older can get the full spec license immediately.
      In Finland we also had this notorious "gifted A", the motorcycle license given with the car license despite the driving training containing no motorcycle training. This practice ended in 1990(ish) but the old licenses are of course still valid. Fast forward to the late 90s, early 00s, import regulations change and a flow of affordable bikes (from mainly Germany starts). And then we had a bunch of boomers who absolutely they had magically mastered the art of motorcycling, needed no training and started on a VS1400.

    DRZ400 bikes are awesome. I didn’t get to try the SM, but any knobbies suck on the road. Being carb’d still kinda sucks, but they’re def a proven bike that rarely has any issues. I put my S in a pit of water deeper than the seat before (looked like a puddle when I approached it haha) and after just letting it dry a bit, it never hiccuped.

    Coolest 'beginner' bike imo; MT03 660 (single cylinder) which can be picked up used in the UK for around £1,500 to £2,500. Bullet-proof engine, good torque, low seat height, light weight, very cool look and superb fun to ride. I owned one alongside a z1000sx for 5 years and I used to swing a leg over the MT more often than the Z.....it was just bloody great fun to ride.

    For the SM or DRZ 400 you can get the Keihin carburetor and FMF exhaust kit. Turns it into a completely different bike. Also. I can't flatfoot a TW200. Hell I am on my toes on my HD Street Bob and one toe on my really lowered KTM 450EXC. I am seriously looking at getting ride of the KTM for 2 TW 200's. I don't ride it the way it needs to and the TW would be a great trail bike for us when we aren't riding our Harley's.

Its big enough for daily use in the crowded streets of Vietnam and its big enough for a good road trip.

    Re: G310R - TVS is made in India but under BMW supervision, reqs, etc. I love it as a my first beginner bike! (Hilarious... I DO have an M5 but that is totally by coincidence hahaha) I feel a REAL BMW bike is like the 1250RS. I just came back from visiting the UK and those are EVERYWHERE as everyone just sport tours around the islands. the G310R is more rare, but it reminds me of riding with my cousins on standards in India village and backroads when I visit. I live in the DC area and no regrets so far. I also don't feel its boast-worthy to talk about a 300cc bike. haha
