When Mary's husband King Francis II of France, the first son of Catherine de' Medici died of an ear infection, leaving her a widow at age 18, the throne of France was passed on to her brother-in-law, Charles IX, and Mary was immediately seen as a threat to the power of the Serpent Queen.
Mary Queen of Scots was sent back to Scotland, changing her fate to rule over Scotland, the country of her birth and putting her squarely in the crosshairs of crowned Queen Elizabeth I of England.

Maybe if she would sign a treaty to acknowledge Elizabeth as a legitimate queen, the situation may have been different. You never know when you'll need your neighbour's favour, as she learned later.

@puclopuclik4108 Queen Mary was the rightful and legitimate Queen of England, not Elizabeth who was the illegitimate daughter of the harlot Anne Bolyen. Mary despite her legitimate claim as Queen of England also, was happy to accept Elizabeth as Queen providing Elizabeth acknowledged her as her legitimate successor which Elizabeth wud not not but demanded Mary abandon her claim to the English throne had Mary done this she would have abandoned her rightful Queen. Elizabeth conspired against Queen Mary by aiding the treacherous Scottish rebels against their rightful Queen and Country

Why was she called "Mary Queen of Scots," instead of "Mary Queen of Scotland," or "Queen Mary of Scotland?"
The monarchs of Scotland were called Kibg or Queen of Scots of the people not the country.
Elizabeth was not legitimate. Period. Mary 1 was and that short lived son of his. Then Mary queen of scots. Elizabeth shouldn’t even have been considered. I do not admire Elizabeth 1. I wholeheartedly was a huge fan of HRH Elizabeth 2!!!! That’s dedication to the entire job.

Don't be ridiculous. Of course Elizabeth was legitimate. Mary Stuart on the English throne would have been a disaster. That woman ruined everything she touched.
Elizabeth I was politically savvy, and her reign is known as the most peaceful and prosperous of the Tudor Dynasty.
