Catherine de Medici is possibly one queen that many in todays society are not quite familiar with. Perhaps due to the fact she falls more into European history, but if we look closely at her life, we can see that she was in fact a chess piece in the early life and first marriage of Mary Queen of Scots.
Catherine was brutal and calculating and history has often considered her to be one of the most powerful women in France during the 16th century. Her story is fascinating and full of ups and downs. She was robbed to orphan of Florence because she suffered so much loss during her childhood but her life turned around when she married into French royalty, and eventually became the queen of France.

Starz who made the shows The White Queen/The White Princess and The Spanish Princess announced that there next historical drama series is going to be about Catherine De’ Medici so i can't wait.

Her story and life always fascinated me, the fact that a series on her life can possibly happen is exciting and it’s long overdue.
Catherine de Medici is maybe one of my favorite female historical figures. She understood politics better than most men who surrounded her and weaponized how much people understimated her for being a woman in ways that other female monarchs at the time couldn't even imagine.

I mean, one of my favorites historical not-confirmed-but-i-hope-they-are facts is the failed riot of 1310 and how that one venitian lady killed the leader (if I remember correctly) for a lifetime of no rent. I mean, same.
During my Senior year in college a course was offered called HERSTORY. It was to give the history of influential women in history. I would hope that Catherine de Medici was discussed.
I have always been fascinated by Catherine De Medici. I first read about her as a child (I had unusual reading tastes for my age) and to me she epitomised a will to survive - and who can blame her when you look at how turbulent her childhood was. I think a lot of her reputation has unfortunately been tarnished by men. If judged by the standards of her time she was certainly no worse than most male rulers of her time, and if anything a lot more intelligent and considered. By all accounts she was also an excellent horsewoman.
Same goes for Erzebet Bathory. I will never believe that she killed a single person. It was propaganda for the government (who owed her truck loads) to get out of their debt and take the test if what she had.
Rose from being an orphan, Catherine was fighter, diplomatic and tactful. She cared alot for her children. Henry II was never faithful to her, yet she always fulfilled her duties to the court and dynasty of Valois. Being a strong mother and ruler, she must be admired and appreciated.
Catherine got a lot of bad press but its clear to me that the mass of it is propaganda. She was able, smart, quick thinking...an intelligent and capable noblewoman. And this coming after a childhood from hell. She was everything that scared secular men and the clergy both. So of course she was denounced. Thanks for a balanced analysis of her. More of this kind of work is needed.
I think that it was interesting how Catherine was portrayed in the show "Reign." Personally I think the show was terrible because the costumes were all wrong and Mary Queen of Scots had 4 ladies that were with her all her life; they were all named Mary also. The show portrays them all with different names. I watched it anyhow. Catherine de Medici's character was probably the best one in the series.
I think they didnt name them all Mary in the show because it would be confusing to viewers who didnt already know the history
@@pleidastaurus5908 Yeah, but still that part of the history is interesting... and the whole British convent thing, what was that? She grew up in French Royal Court.
Authenticity of costumes is important, yes, but four Mary’s?…they’d have to have different nicknames amongst themselves at least or it’d be too confusing.
They wanted to give a modernized feel through the costumes. The story also had to be fictionalized to some degree.

The costumes though... goodness they were terribly modern. I did really like the lady that played Catherine de Medici... Rebecca Fellows ot Follows I think. She also directed quite a lot of it.
Love how after Henry ii died, Diane was never mentioned again😭 she just got tossed aside like foul grape 🍷
Catherine moved really quick- she went with her entourage to Henry on his death-bed and refused to let Diane anywhere near him, even when he begged to see her, then used her position as regent to banish her from court. Completely ruthless, but it made sure everybody knew who was in charge.

Very interesting. She has captured my attention since I first learned of her. The other day when you put a video up about Catherine De Valois I thought it was about Catherine De Medici 😅 I thought it was her formal name or something lol that’s how new I am to the French Renaissance.
And she brought to France and there with to rest of Europe the what we now see as French cooking,baking, pastry and her hundreds of staff of all kinds that transformed the way of dining .

I may be wrong, as I don't recognise the portrait, but the image at 1:35 looks more like Marie de' Medici, a relative of Catherine's who (confusingly) married a different King Henri and was also queen of France from 1600-1614. It's nice this video takes a more balanced look at Catherine, as she's often unfairly demonised in French history due to her gender and nationality. She was certainly ruthless, but it was a time of brutal conflict and she was just playing by the same rules as everyone else.

A lot of people are unaware that it was she that brought the italian Balleto to France ( a combination of Mime and Dance) which was embroidered on by French Dancing masters and eventually became Ballet Though in those days it was due to the heavy costumes etc more Mime and walking and posing usually on Classical Greek and Roman legends. That would develop over the next centuries to become the Art we know today.
Love your channel, as a history buff it's so important that the story of the women gets properly shared.
Some of the key names and words are mispronounced (Diane de Poitiers, Huguenots, Coligny, Bourbon, and a few more) not sure if this is a deliberate anglicisation, it just stood out a little jarringly.

I’m American so most of my royal history knowledge was about the British royals. I have no idea why since Spain “discovered” america and France helped free america from British rule. Nonetheless our educational system taught about the British royals. When I watched Reign I googled Catherine and became fully hooked!
I wish someone would do a show on Catherine and have Meghan follows play Catherine !!!!!!! She was just fabulous at the role.
Yes I know reign is a soap opera drama based on historical events and not historically accurate. Idc. I loved the show anyway. I’ve watched it 4 times and rebinged on it during Covid lockdowns - I binged on tudors again too. Better than keeping up with a Kardashian! 🤷🏻♀️

Learned about her the other day when researching my husband's family tree when I came across three generations of one family that were all killed on the same day in the St Bartholomew's Day Masacre... which Catherine De'Medici was the primary instigator.
You might enjoy Le Reine Margot. Like most films based on historical events, there are issues with the timeline and general accuracy but all the same it's a beautiful movie
If you watch the video, it's about there not being any evidence of Cathrine de Medici planning it, because it was she who had been struggling to broker peace between both factions and even offered her daughter up to the Protestant Henry of Navarre, and saved the life of a Protestant general and admiral being targeted by the Parisian mobs. She became a victim of "Black Legend" .
She was probably much less responsible than the Guise family. Catherine had worked very hard to broker the marriage between her daughter Marguerite and Henri of Navarre in order to try to bring peace to the country. It makes no sense that she'd throw it all away without a good reason. The Guise family had multiple motives for triggering the massacre. Not only did they want revenge for the death of Duke Francis, but as de facto leaders of the hard-line Catholic anti-toleration faction, the peace deal potentially weakened their position. Quite apart from that, the assassin who attempted to murder Admiral de Coligny, triggering the massacre, was a known Guise retainer, who fled towards a Guise property after the shooting, accidentally dropping a gun identified as having been made for the Guise family along the way. During the subsequent massacre, Henry of Guise actually rode to the house where Coligny was recuperating with a group of armed men, who stabbed him to death and threw his corpse out of the window, before cutting his head off as a trophy. Catherine may have endorsed the murder of some of the Protestant dignitaries as a way of trying to contain the situation, but the Guise family seem to have been much more responsible based on the historical information available.
I disagree with casting her in the role as instigator. She had tried very hard to arrange a marriage that might have stabilized the situation...and of course, hindsight is always 20/20. I don't believe she foresaw or hoped for the conditions that brought about the massacre....but....it happened on her watch and she got the brunt of the blame. Shame really. I honestly think she tried hard to avoid just such a catastrophe.

After watching a TV show about this queen..I thank you for clarifying this French history. The TV show is unbelievably silly and seems to lack any authenticity. If I watch it again your research into the queen is most appreciated.

I love the style of clothes back then. We have The White Queen and the White Princess, The Spanish Princess was very good, The Tudors was excellent, they just ended the first season of Becoming Elizabeth and a new series on Starz is starting on September 11. We can't wait. I've read almost all of Phillipa Gregory's books, she actually does some excellent research for her books.

None of them royalty, b/c female royals do not advance the cause of women beyond themselves. Even if one requires 'great' English 'royal' women, only 1 on that list qualifies (Diana). Catherine of Aragon is Spanish. Mary queen of Scots is French (not Scottish, funnily enough. The woman hated Scotland). Catherine de' Medici was from an Italian family & never spent 1 second on English soil nor spoke the language. Victoria was German by blood & language.
