I am not buying. My current AirPods Max will do the same thing. I would have considered them if they got Lossless Audio ability and manual equalization. But there is nothing in the specs saying that. Beats Studio Pros (to stay in the Apple Ecosystem) are a better alternative for the money. And, as you said, there are other great alternatives with even better sound and lossless capability.
Begrudgingly, yes, as I've already waged war against lightning and after one year, this is the final battle; although, I could just chuck my current ones in the bin and call it a day...that would also rid this house of lightning once and for all!

as an airpods max daily user for the past 3 years I'm beyond disappointed with how apple has treated this product, first and foremost theese are "airpods" so all the "airpod" exclusive features u should expect, y Apple has chosen to shun thier most expensive Airpods is baffling, no adaptive audio, no conversation awareness, no new siri interaction, no voice isolation, no personalised volume, no water or dust resistance, Bluetooth 5.0 as opposed to 5.3, H1 chip as opposed to H2, none of the newly announced hearing aid features too, and all of theese features are avaliable on airpods that are almost half the price of theese, it genuinely confuses me what Apple are playing at here?
@@rickd438I looked at the original model AirPods Max when they were released, but in all good conscience given the feature set , or lack there of , I would not buy them. It’s a shame Apple did the bare minimum to this product which could have been so much better imo. I have a couple of other pairs of phones , one Bose set that I have absolutely worn to death, even slept with them on occasion 😊, to the point the ear cups need replacing. I also have some old skull candy phones which are also well worn and showing their age , and probably cost a third of what the Apple phones cost , probably not as good sound wise , but I’m no audio file and they do the job fine for me , have nice easy to use buttons , and battery life seems amazing on them. Apple imo needs to do better on the AirPods Max.
No. I'm gutted, to be honest. I've been waiting for the update for about two years, because I've wanted a pair of these since they came out, even though they're overpriced. But now I really can't hand over that amount of money: the most expensive AirPods now have older technology than the cheapest pair of AirPods. This doesn't make sense.
Just get an XM5, all my devices are Apple products but using a Sony headphone has been one of the smartest technological purchases I’ve made. I mean sure, you can’t get the seamless transition like the AirPods but sound quality, price, etc. all triumph my need for another overpriced, outdated Apple headphones.
@@CH-gt4nj Yep, that's pretty much my Plan B - you don't get the seamless transition between devices, which would be lovely, and the audio pass-through isn't as good (but this isn't a big deal for me - these are headphones to use at home, not having good pass-though is not something I'm going to miss) - but the sound is as good and the ANC is as good - and they're half the price. I love the visual design of the Air Pods Max, and I love the seamless transition, but neither of those things justify paying twice as much as the Sonys. For me it's very simple: I really, really don't like wearing in-ear earbuds, so I don't. All I wanted from Apple was an equivalent to the AirPods Pro 2, but as overear headphones. And I would pay a premium for that. But that isn't what the AirPods Max are.

I waited for the update. The update was disappointing to say the least. I’m ordering the Focal Bathys. I think Apple will find they had a lot of people holding that were wanting to buy that will now buy their alternate choice.
@@ItsJesusLol Not a stupid question. Both have great sound. Bose features an equalizer in the app that allows you to adjust the sound. I like them both and I have had both!

What do you think about sound quality of both of them? Noticeable difference in Px8? I actually ordered both of them because I still can’t decide :( Px8 are better build and what I can read on Reddit better sounding, but I’m so deeply sinked into Apple ecosystem, I’m not sure convenience won’t be a deciding factor tbh. I have momentum 4 and BT switching is pain in the 🍑
@StaagG I believe they sound much better. I find the Max too bright. Good, though not for me. I'll miss the transparency mode as nothing beats the Max, though the Px8 certainly aren't bad in that mode. Best to try both as we all have different tast at the end of the day

Damn I miss my px8. After having owned both, I sold my Airpods Max and kept the px8. The burgundy purple was so cleannnn. The build quality and soundstage were leagues ahead of the Airpods.
I really wanted an headset. This Max was the obvious move for me. Unfortunately, i know that if I buy it this year, i'll probably be disappointed to see next year a new Max with all the features we have seen on the Pro 2, and Pods 4 ...
We have had them from release. Audio sharing is a strong feature. I use them for zoom and the mute function is key. The ANC is the best. I use them for hours every day.
I still use mine all the time, mostly as a gaming headphone. Works very well for gaming, specially with the noise cancelling feature. I'll keep them for a long time. No need to upgrade
You recommend them for gaming then? I am thinking about buying the wire so I can just plug it into my ps5 controller. I can imagine the noise cancellation is awesome on single player games.
@@Icandothisallday1521i love them for gaming, pc or even ipad via bluetooth or xbox via wired to the controller. They work great with all platforms and switch over quickly and efficiently, altho there can be pairing bugs sometimes. Overall very pricy but i use em every day.
Anyone that owns a Lightning Aipods Max has ZERO reasons to "upgrade" to USB-C. Why spend $550 just so you can charge with another cable? If you can plug a USB-C cable in, you can surely plug a Lightning cable in for no more than the reason of saving all that money. I honestly hate the fact that they don't have a on/off switch, I started having problems with mine and that's when you wish they had them. They are old and outdated and surely treated this badly by apple means they are not a priority moving forward which to me is reason for concern if I was indeed in the market for new headphones...

I did, just because I always wanted a pair and waited 2yrs. I know it’s overpriced but I am heavily invested in the ecosystem and love the sound. Also will be buying some open back headphones for an alternative when listening while not working at a desk.
I'm not in the apple ecosystem but the Max exists for people like me. I have to wear hearing aids for tinnitus. If I remove them to use in ear type buds (I have pixel buds pro) the sound quality is destroyed. I have a pair of Bose QC 45 which allow me to keep my hearing aids on and enjoy superb quality music.
I think the case is a brilliant compact design. It protects the main surface area and I haven’t damaged my pair since I purchased in 2021. The last thing I want is a big clunky enclosed case that won’t fit into my laptop bag.
Waited for 2 years for the upgrade, and then i heard the rumours - which I believed. So I bought the B&O H100s when they came out last week and SO glad I did. Apple really took an L on this 'update'. I can't understand it.

i actually really enjoy how if I'm using my macbook or iPad and i get a call it will ask me if i wanna answer it and it will switch to the phone. Very smooth transition and my voice doesn't sound muffled or distorted. Love that!
I’ve had the Beoplay H100’s for about a week now and I love them! They do a great job with immersive Dolby Atmos, giving you that ability to look away from the screen, yet have the audio stay pointed at the content. And I’ve been extremely happy with the ANC and transparency. Finally the sound quality, bass response, sound stage are awesome! Are you going to be reviewing those sometime soon?
Sold mine last year for some Focal Bathys, The Bathys are the best bluetooth headphones out there and with the added bonus of the DAC mode they do high res lossless which the APM cannot do
So heavy and bothering after a less than an hour. I tried all of major brand headphones and the best i found are the sonos ace. It’s really really comfortable and sound great!
I waited on buying AirPods Max thinking we were going to get a nice update and I can’t believe that after four years, all we got was a new port. Given that I have so many of the features and more with the AirPods Pro, i might go for the QC’s for flights and comfort
I purchased my Max a year more ago. I find all of the Apple headphones to offer especially clear and consistent sound. They may not be of audiophile quality but few are. I even like the case. I have a travel case that I purchased for about $35. But for everyday listening, I find the smaller case to be easy to grab and carry. The Max essentially work like the rest of the AirPods in that they sleep in their cases and connect when removed. I do think Apple owes Max and update and would not be surprised if one came along in a year year or so. They need to update the chip, the mics and perhaps add some water resistance. As for cost, we are now seeing wireless headphones priced at $1550 from Bang & Olufsen. $550 is still a lot of money, Apple offers high quality for the money. There are certainly other good offerings for 1/2 to 2/3 the price.
It’s only haters saying they’re not “audiophile” quality. Koss porta pros are “audiophile” quality. The airpods maxes are absolutely “audiophile” quality. This release is a joke, but they’re “audiophile” quality.
The reason I got the air pod max was because of the build I have huge ears and they have great ear pieces that make it very comfortable for me which I haven’t gotten anywhere else but with the big ear pieces it doesn’t stick out which I love that’s why I bought a pair of

I love my AirPods Pro 2 but I’d like a pair of overears for Spatial Audio just for added comfort. Do you think the Beats Studio Pro cut it in that regard?
I bought them absolutely hate them.. I don’t know why I can’t ever turn them off without a struggle. And having to connect and disconnect them each time I wanted to use them was an inconvenience (might be silly to some) compared to my airpods pros.
I bought the WH-1000 m4s this week and I am happy with my purchase I don't need the latest and greatest I just need them to work I like them because they are light and for long listening time.
It honestly would have been a better move for them to either silently update them or just not at all. The optics are just bad, there's no excuse for these to not have gained feature parity with the cheaper and much smaller AirPod Pro's... I'm fully in the Apple ecosystem and was waiting for an update to these but I almost immediately bought the XM5's after the keynote
@@alexusjames6768 I got the xm5 and will say am very happy. I charge once every other week and have worn mine through 16+ hour flights. The AirPods Max doesn’t have a very good battery life and are heavy in comparison
@@jrondorf so far I love them. Had them for a few days now, tried anything from classical to electronic and after a small EQ tweak they are very versatile. ANC is great, not as good as my AirPods Pro’s but I don’t think you can expect over ears to be as good. Clamping force and comfort are spot on, very comfortable to wear whilst working or walking. Zero regrets vs AirPods Max
B&W PX8s are close to, perhaps even better than, the AirPods Max in terms of build quality and sound better. They launched at $800 but are usually on sale for around $500.
I sold my AirPods Max and got the Bose Quiet Comfort Ultra and I’m blown away by the sound quality, purity, crispness and light weight of the headphones. VERY PLEASED!!!
Purchased my APM on launch day four years ago and struggled to find a use for them other than when traveling. I use my APP daily. As someone with a shaved head I am left with an indentation from the band and ear cuffs for quite a while whenever I use them which to be honest is one of the main reasons I’ve given up using them.
got mine and are enjoying them apart from the huge fact that when i’m on calls i assumed it would noise cancel background noise for the person on the other end of the call. it doesn’t- as someone who is using these for work this is NOT ideal at all

Mine have been broken, exactly after 2 years. I mean like exactly on the date i bought them and no warranty i was using them every day. Basically they don't connect anymore. It charges, everything ok. But connecting doesnt work anymore. Cleaned it but still no connection
Wound up getting the Sonos Ace a couple of weeks ago because I was tired of waiting for the new Maxes, especially with the rumors that the only upgrades would be USB-C. When I saw how quickly they glossed over the Maxes in their event I knew I'd made the right choice, they're fantastic!
Is there USBC audio in? Can you connect that filmsy Apple’s USBC-jack adapter and listen by wire? Lightning version had this option that required special wire tho.
Im wanting to get my daughter headphones for her 18th birthday. Having AirPods Pro 2 myself id like to get these, but she doesn't like earbuds. So I have two questions, she has broken so many other headbands as she sleeps with them on. Is the headband metal? And if she was to lose or have them stolen, can they be tracked in apple software?
I bought myself the Sonos Ace and I like them a lot. Solid audio, good and up to date codecs, extremely comfortable, USB-C and 3.5 cables included, pretty good ANC and transparency mode, a proper case and… yes… a crappy app with an underwhelming equalizer. But the whole package is very good. And as you mentioned, there are loads of other great and less expensive options. I have no clue what apple was thinking. They certainly lost credibility concerning their commitment to good audio.
Thanks Mark. After waiting over a year for updated AirPod Max, following the announcement on Monday night I promptly went and ordered a pair of Sonos Ace on sale at Amazon! As much as I love the look of the Max and would appreciate the ease of use within the apple ecosystem that I get with my AirPod Pros, there are too many compromises compared to what I expect from a pair of headphones - On/off functionality, a proper case and the weight of them, and I just don't think they give the value for money compared to other options out there. I'll give the Sonos Ace a go (seem pretty good so far, and being an owner of a Sonos Arc and Ray can take advantage of the audio swap) and see where we are at in a couple of years. I do have the Sennheiser Momentum 4s to fall back on if the Sonos don't work out...
I did the same thing. I still have so Max's but I just don't love them enough to use the all the time and they are SO heavy. and the Aces have all I need with my iPhone I can use the USB to get lossless so im happy with them and the white ones looks really nice

If they'd at least added a power button and made a better case. My Sonos Ace are in the shopping cart already, and I will order them in the next few days. (edit: Sonos Ace have been ordered 🙂)
Just bought the first version, and for me, they serve the purpose brilliantly. My primary use is listening to the audio from my “smart” TV, and the APM works brilliantly. Also for music listening: brilliant. Too expensive? Probably, but I’m gonna forget about that and enjoy them.
thank you! this actually really helped me weigh out my options. i started with airpods gen 2 and after a few years they were breaking down. then, i got a pair of airpods pro (can't remember what gen) and have been using those since. however, i was looking forward to an airpod max 2 major update because i find myself being very forgetful of a small tiny case and the pros have been through the wash accidentally a couple times(😅). the update was not what i was expecting in all honesty, it's been about 4 yrs and i expected better. unfortunately, i think i will still be investing in these poorly updated airpods max just because i don't want to give up the easy use of airpods in the apple ecosystem. if anyone else has some opinions, i'm open to hearing them out. i have considered getting the pros, and looking for another over ear headphone (around the same price of if i bought just airpods max), but i just am not sure because the pros aren't what i was looking forward to.
You mention Beats, have they got better over the last few years? I had a pair long before Apple brought the company, I found them to be be flimsy and not sound that good. Have they got better and do they sound better than the AirPods Max?
currently I have xm5 and wanted tr try something else. was looking into qc ultra and the apm, I liked the apm for aluminum finish and apple integration. but was hoping for a newer modle this year. not sure what I should do anymore
Oooh my. I love Sonos products! I tried the ACE’s and found it to be night & day compared to the AIRPODS MAX. The Max’s soundstage was more spacious and balanced. The Sonos needed tweeking in the mids section. They definitely have potential and could stand a firmware upgrade. Love your videos!
My favorite are the Beats Studio pro and master and dynamic m50w+ ( I know they don't have anc... but the sound is just wow and the feel on you're head )
Will you test the USB-c DAC based audio? One of my favorite things about my Bathys is the insane sound quality upgrade when connected vs just listening to them wirelessly.

Funnily enough, the one major complaint I’ve heard about the Sonos Ace since they launched is in regards to their sound profile. Read a rather concerning amount of comments across different websites and forums of people criticising them for sounding rather anemic/ lacking bass. Put me right off them.
the xm have read leakage oem time i hear the radio when listening to music in the right ear phone and the warranty is really bad on them and they are more delilcate i wont be buying sony again was hoping the pro max2 were going to be good not sure what to buy now to replace my xm5s
You hit the nail on the head with your comment about the AirPods Pro 2's having more features at half the price. if the AirPods Max is the premium product which warrants a price tag at a ridiculous $550 USD then they should at the very least have all or more features as the AirPods Pro's. I really wanted the AirPods Max update to convince me to buy a pair but when all they did was to change the charging port to USB C and call them "all new AirPods Max" I was convinced they were ripping me off!

People I know with the prev airpods max love them. They've improved with updates. I'm wondering whether to get an older version or the new ones. Battery for those who have had it from release say the battery is fine. Second hand they're £325. Case isn't important for the intended use as it's going to be used at fixed locations.
I wonder they will corrode on the connection points where each end of the headpiece click into each earpiece. Just hoping they will handle moisture better.
Lovely review Mark again. I sold my Focal Bathys (I hated them) looked like Dr Who and the cybermen, hated their sound also, but love my Focal Radiance which is a closed back headphone. I also got rid of my Bowers and Wilkins PX8 connection wise they were not very good kept disconnecting etc. I got the latest Bose but they were so boring and cheap feeling. I then bought the Apple Max which I am listening to your review on and I completely love them - yes for what you said the flawless connection to all my Apple products. The isolation is to my mind better than the Bluetooth headphones I have mentioned. I don’t use the case. However I bought a beautiful case from Waterfield but never use it because as soon as you put the headphones down after use they turn off and I just forget to put them in the case. The only thing I wish is that the cups were leather and not material. It’s quite scratchy and like you say the mesh should be a better material and not sag. Mine is okay at the moment but now I am paranoid. Thanks again for this.
I was mainly waiting for the update to see the different colors…. I was always planning on getting the updated version if the colors were good so i don’t mind that they didn’t change much tbh in fact its a deciding factor because i was worried they would “fix” things that were not broken…
It needs an on/off switch. So many times it doesn’t wake up. Taking in & out of the “case” & plugging & unplugging the charger to turn them on is a punish. I’m on my 2nd pair & this has always been a problem. The canopy mesh is also soft. Other than that i really like mine
I may not be the upmost expert in sound. But i can tell if the audio is good. I always thought the pod max is night and day different and extra ordinary but wow trying it for the first time the audioooo is almost similar to what i get from my airpod 3 minus the anc.
I am going to buy them, and I know it is not the sharpest move. It is really bad that Apple did not update any internals, just cosmetics for these ones but I have been thinking of getting them since 2020. I was waiting to get them until they at least changed the port so I could finally forget about the lighting... and the AirPods Pro does not fit my ears so I cannot really enjoy all its features. So there AirPods are the 1.1 versions with new colours and a new usb-c charging port. You can’t even buy an usb-c to 3.5 mm connector like the lighting to 3.5 mm jack. Am sure it’s the same H1 chip, I don’t know why they didn’t put the H2 chip like have AirPods Pro 2 so they could have similar features as them like you said

I was looking forward to buying the new APM’s, but was very disappointed about this 1.5 version. I seen that Best Buy happened to have the Bowers & Wilkins PX8 on sale for $40 cheaper than the USB C APM’s. $510! Definitely going that route!

it feels like Apple didn't even put an effort into the "new" AirPods Max. Just released a new version for complying with the USB-C regulation from the EU. They could have put the H2 chip as-well to keep up with the new features of AirPods Pro 2.
I have that sagging issue too! I was thinking it was maybe just my unit. Well, apparently they don't age very well in that regard. One thing I'd love to know with USB-C is whether I can do audio over USB-C to USB-C, unlike the current gen's Lighting to 3.5mm.
I def use the AirPods at work (one ear at a time) but when im home i want the rich volume the Max’s deliver. Yes i use the eco system. It all works together.
My canopy is doing the same thing... Cuts into my head. Went to Apple and they won't replace it as it's wear and tear. Never thought mesh that is failing and hurting my head would be considered as part of the design.
The moment they announced the usb c one I directly went to amazon and bought old ones for cheaper. I was waiting for at least H2 upgrade but they didn't do any upgrades.
Apple said very little about the APP2 sound improvement over the original model and yet they are so much better. I think there could be more coming they haven’t said yet, but it also could just be a minor upgrade as is now expected. They also did this with APP2 in the past. I think the Max sound great and I have thousands and thousands in headphones and IEMs. Apple could provide a nice EQ (or an auto EQ) and I don’t think anyone would really need better. They also have the best microphones, but that may just be because it’s closer to the mouth than the APP2. What you’re really getting with those other headphones is simply a different tuning. The drivers and amplifiers used in the Max are really well engineered. Because Apple is such a huge brand, they’re tuning for what their studies show are the most popular frequency response. This common tuning will moreso be for your average listener and not necessarily an audiophile who may want something different.

It’s a shame Apple did the bare minimum to this product which could have been so much better imo.
I have a couple of other pairs of phones , one Bose set that I have absolutely worn to death, even slept with them on occasion 😊, to the point the ear cups need replacing.
I also have some old skull candy phones which are also well worn and showing their age , and probably cost a third of what the Apple phones cost , probably not as good sound wise , but I’m no audio file and they do the job fine for me , have nice easy to use buttons , and battery life seems amazing on them.
Apple imo needs to do better on the AirPods Max.

No. I'm gutted, to be honest. I've been waiting for the update for about two years, because I've wanted a pair of these since they came out, even though they're overpriced. But now I really can't hand over that amount of money: the most expensive AirPods now have older technology than the cheapest pair of AirPods. This doesn't make sense.

Just get an XM5, all my devices are Apple products but using a Sony headphone has been one of the smartest technological purchases I’ve made. I mean sure, you can’t get the seamless transition like the AirPods but sound quality, price, etc. all triumph my need for another overpriced, outdated Apple headphones.
@@CH-gt4nj Yep, that's pretty much my Plan B - you don't get the seamless transition between devices, which would be lovely, and the audio pass-through isn't as good (but this isn't a big deal for me - these are headphones to use at home, not having good pass-though is not something I'm going to miss) - but the sound is as good and the ANC is as good - and they're half the price. I love the visual design of the Air Pods Max, and I love the seamless transition, but neither of those things justify paying twice as much as the Sonys. For me it's very simple: I really, really don't like wearing in-ear earbuds, so I don't. All I wanted from Apple was an equivalent to the AirPods Pro 2, but as overear headphones. And I would pay a premium for that. But that isn't what the AirPods Max are.

@StaagG I believe they sound much better. I find the Max too bright. Good, though not for me. I'll miss the transparency mode as nothing beats the Max, though the Px8 certainly aren't bad in that mode. Best to try both as we all have different tast at the end of the day

Damn I miss my px8. After having owned both, I sold my Airpods Max and kept the px8. The burgundy purple was so cleannnn. The build quality and soundstage were leagues ahead of the Airpods.

We have had them from release. Audio sharing is a strong feature. I use them for zoom and the mute function is key. The ANC is the best. I use them for hours every day.

I still use mine all the time, mostly as a gaming headphone. Works very well for gaming, specially with the noise cancelling feature. I'll keep them for a long time. No need to upgrade
You recommend them for gaming then? I am thinking about buying the wire so I can just plug it into my ps5 controller. I can imagine the noise cancellation is awesome on single player games.

Anyone that owns a Lightning Aipods Max has ZERO reasons to "upgrade" to USB-C. Why spend $550 just so you can charge with another cable? If you can plug a USB-C cable in, you can surely plug a Lightning cable in for no more than the reason of saving all that money. I honestly hate the fact that they don't have a on/off switch, I started having problems with mine and that's when you wish they had them. They are old and outdated and surely treated this badly by apple means they are not a priority moving forward which to me is reason for concern if I was indeed in the market for new headphones...

I did, just because I always wanted a pair and waited 2yrs. I know it’s overpriced but I am heavily invested in the ecosystem and love the sound. Also will be buying some open back headphones for an alternative when listening while not working at a desk.

I'm not in the apple ecosystem but the Max exists for people like me. I have to wear hearing aids for tinnitus. If I remove them to use in ear type buds (I have pixel buds pro) the sound quality is destroyed.
I have a pair of Bose QC 45 which allow me to keep my hearing aids on and enjoy superb quality music.
I think the case is a brilliant compact design. It protects the main surface area and I haven’t damaged my pair since I purchased in 2021. The last thing I want is a big clunky enclosed case that won’t fit into my laptop bag.

i actually really enjoy how if I'm using my macbook or iPad and i get a call it will ask me if i wanna answer it and it will switch to the phone. Very smooth transition and my voice doesn't sound muffled or distorted. Love that!
I’ve had the Beoplay H100’s for about a week now and I love them! They do a great job with immersive Dolby Atmos, giving you that ability to look away from the screen, yet have the audio stay pointed at the content. And I’ve been extremely happy with the ANC and transparency. Finally the sound quality, bass response, sound stage are awesome! Are you going to be reviewing those sometime soon?
Sold mine last year for some Focal Bathys, The Bathys are the best bluetooth headphones out there and with the added bonus of the DAC mode they do high res lossless which the APM cannot do

I waited on buying AirPods Max thinking we were going to get a nice update and I can’t believe that after four years, all we got was a new port. Given that I have so many of the features and more with the AirPods Pro, i might go for the QC’s for flights and comfort
I purchased my Max a year more ago. I find all of the Apple headphones to offer especially clear and consistent sound. They may not be of audiophile quality but few are. I even like the case. I have a travel case that I purchased for about $35. But for everyday listening, I find the smaller case to be easy to grab and carry. The Max essentially work like the rest of the AirPods in that they sleep in their cases and connect when removed. I do think Apple owes Max and update and would not be surprised if one came along in a year year or so. They need to update the chip, the mics and perhaps add some water resistance. As for cost, we are now seeing wireless headphones priced at $1550 from Bang & Olufsen. $550 is still a lot of money, Apple offers high quality for the money. There are certainly other good offerings for 1/2 to 2/3 the price.
It’s only haters saying they’re not “audiophile” quality. Koss porta pros are “audiophile” quality. The airpods maxes are absolutely “audiophile” quality. This release is a joke, but they’re “audiophile” quality.

The Beats Studio Pro are a superb pair of headphones.
I bought them absolutely hate them.. I don’t know why I can’t ever turn them off without a struggle. And having to connect and disconnect them each time I wanted to use them was an inconvenience (might be silly to some) compared to my airpods pros.
I bought the WH-1000 m4s this week and I am happy with my purchase I don't need the latest and greatest I just need them to work I like them because they are light and for long listening time.
It honestly would have been a better move for them to either silently update them or just not at all. The optics are just bad, there's no excuse for these to not have gained feature parity with the cheaper and much smaller AirPod Pro's... I'm fully in the Apple ecosystem and was waiting for an update to these but I almost immediately bought the XM5's after the keynote

@@jrondorf so far I love them. Had them for a few days now, tried anything from classical to electronic and after a small EQ tweak they are very versatile. ANC is great, not as good as my AirPods Pro’s but I don’t think you can expect over ears to be as good.

B&W PX8s are close to, perhaps even better than, the AirPods Max in terms of build quality and sound better. They launched at $800 but are usually on sale for around $500.
I sold my AirPods Max and got the Bose Quiet Comfort Ultra and I’m blown away by the sound quality, purity, crispness and light weight of the headphones. VERY PLEASED!!!

Purchased my APM on launch day four years ago and struggled to find a use for them other than when traveling. I use my APP daily. As someone with a shaved head I am left with an indentation from the band and ear cuffs for quite a while whenever I use them which to be honest is one of the main reasons I’ve given up using them.
got mine and are enjoying them apart from the huge fact that when i’m on calls i assumed it would noise cancel background noise for the person on the other end of the call. it doesn’t- as someone who is using these for work this is NOT ideal at all

Mine have been broken, exactly after 2 years. I mean like exactly on the date i bought them and no warranty i was using them every day. Basically they don't connect anymore. It charges, everything ok. But connecting doesnt work anymore. Cleaned it but still no connection
Wound up getting the Sonos Ace a couple of weeks ago because I was tired of waiting for the new Maxes, especially with the rumors that the only upgrades would be USB-C. When I saw how quickly they glossed over the Maxes in their event I knew I'd made the right choice, they're fantastic!

So I have two questions, she has broken so many other headbands as she sleeps with them on. Is the headband metal? And if she was to lose or have them stolen, can they be tracked in apple software?
yes, and yes, they do have a metal headband with a mesh coilover on top, and they do support the Find My feature

I bought myself the Sonos Ace and I like them a lot. Solid audio, good and up to date codecs, extremely comfortable, USB-C and 3.5 cables included, pretty good ANC and transparency mode, a proper case and… yes… a crappy app with an underwhelming equalizer. But the whole package is very good. And as you mentioned, there are loads of other great and less expensive options.
I have no clue what apple was thinking. They certainly lost credibility concerning their commitment to good audio.

Thanks Mark. After waiting over a year for updated AirPod Max, following the announcement on Monday night I promptly went and ordered a pair of Sonos Ace on sale at Amazon!
As much as I love the look of the Max and would appreciate the ease of use within the apple ecosystem that I get with my AirPod Pros, there are too many compromises compared to what I expect from a pair of headphones - On/off functionality, a proper case and the weight of them, and I just don't think they give the value for money compared to other options out there.
I'll give the Sonos Ace a go (seem pretty good so far, and being an owner of a Sonos Arc and Ray can take advantage of the audio swap) and see where we are at in a couple of years. I do have the Sennheiser Momentum 4s to fall back on if the Sonos don't work out...

I did the same thing. I still have so Max's but I just don't love them enough to use the all the time and they are SO heavy. and the Aces have all I need with my iPhone I can use the USB to get lossless so im happy with them and the white ones looks really nice

Just bought the first version, and for me, they serve the purpose brilliantly. My primary use is listening to the audio from my “smart” TV, and the APM works brilliantly. Also for music listening: brilliant. Too expensive? Probably, but I’m gonna forget about that and enjoy them.

this actually really helped me weigh out my options. i started with airpods gen 2 and after a few years they were breaking down. then, i got a pair of airpods pro (can't remember what gen) and have been using those since. however, i was looking forward to an airpod max 2 major update because i find myself being very forgetful of a small tiny case and the pros have been through the wash accidentally a couple times(😅).
the update was not what i was expecting in all honesty, it's been about 4 yrs and i expected better. unfortunately, i think i will still be investing in these poorly updated airpods max just because i don't want to give up the easy use of airpods in the apple ecosystem. if anyone else has some opinions, i'm open to hearing them out. i have considered getting the pros, and looking for another over ear headphone (around the same price of if i bought just airpods max), but i just am not sure because the pros aren't what i was looking forward to.

Oooh my. I love Sonos products! I tried the ACE’s and found it to be night & day compared to the AIRPODS MAX. The Max’s soundstage was more spacious and balanced. The Sonos needed tweeking in the mids section. They definitely have potential and could stand a firmware upgrade. Love your videos!
My favorite are the Beats Studio pro and master and dynamic m50w+ ( I know they don't have anc... but the sound is just wow and the feel on you're head )
Will you test the USB-c DAC based audio? One of my favorite things about my Bathys is the insane sound quality upgrade when connected vs just listening to them wirelessly.

Funnily enough, the one major complaint I’ve heard about the Sonos Ace since they launched is in regards to their sound profile. Read a rather concerning amount of comments across different websites and forums of people criticising them for sounding rather anemic/ lacking bass. Put me right off them.

You hit the nail on the head with your comment about the AirPods Pro 2's having more features at half the price. if the AirPods Max is the premium product which warrants a price tag at a ridiculous $550 USD then they should at the very least have all or more features as the AirPods Pro's. I really wanted the AirPods Max update to convince me to buy a pair but when all they did was to change the charging port to USB C and call them "all new AirPods Max" I was convinced they were ripping me off!

People I know with the prev airpods max love them. They've improved with updates. I'm wondering whether to get an older version or the new ones.

Lovely review Mark again. I sold my Focal Bathys (I hated them) looked like Dr Who and the cybermen, hated their sound also, but love my Focal Radiance which is a closed back headphone. I also got rid of my Bowers and Wilkins PX8 connection wise they were not very good kept disconnecting etc. I got the latest Bose but they were so boring and cheap feeling. I then bought the Apple Max which I am listening to your review on and I completely love them - yes for what you said the flawless connection to all my Apple products. The isolation is to my mind better than the Bluetooth headphones I have mentioned. I don’t use the case. However I bought a beautiful case from Waterfield but never use it because as soon as you put the headphones down after use they turn off and I just forget to put them in the case. The only thing I wish is that the cups were leather and not material. It’s quite scratchy and like you say the mesh should be a better material and not sag. Mine is okay at the moment but now I am paranoid. Thanks again for this.
I was mainly waiting for the update to see the different colors…. I was always planning on getting the updated version if the colors were good so i don’t mind that they didn’t change much tbh in fact its a deciding factor because i was worried they would “fix” things that were not broken…
It needs an on/off switch. So many times it doesn’t wake up. Taking in & out of the “case” & plugging & unplugging the charger to turn them on is a punish. I’m on my 2nd pair & this has always been a problem. The canopy mesh is also soft.

I may not be the upmost expert in sound. But i can tell if the audio is good. I always thought the pod max is night and day different and extra ordinary but wow trying it for the first time the audioooo is almost similar to what i get from my airpod 3 minus the anc.
I am going to buy them, and I know it is not the sharpest move. It is really bad that Apple did not update any internals, just cosmetics for these ones but I have been thinking of getting them since 2020. I was waiting to get them until they at least changed the port so I could finally forget about the lighting... and the AirPods Pro does not fit my ears so I cannot really enjoy all its features. any plans on reviewing the new Beoplay H100s by bang & olufsen? The price point is insane but they look like closest we could ever get to an airpods max 2 in terms of sound + features

So there AirPods are the 1.1 versions with new colours and a new usb-c charging port. You can’t even buy an usb-c to 3.5 mm connector like the lighting to 3.5 mm jack. Am sure it’s the same H1 chip, I don’t know why they didn’t put the H2 chip like have AirPods Pro 2 so they could have similar features as them like you said
Literally waited for over a year for this update to replace my 4 year old xm4s, what a waste of time.
I was waiting to pick the Apple Airpods Max 2 after the apple event. Now, sadly I will buy this version. I am annoyed yes, but I need to get these. Cant wait for another couple of months. thanks for the video :D
I was looking forward to buying the new APM’s, but was very disappointed about this 1.5 version. I seen that Best Buy happened to have the Bowers & Wilkins PX8 on sale for $40 cheaper than the USB C APM’s. $510! Definitely going that route!
As someone that doesnt have the "old" max, should I still consider getting the new ones?
Consider them, but do your research on competing products - there are _so_ many options out there (I've reviewed most of them).

it feels like Apple didn't even put an effort into the "new" AirPods Max. Just released a new version for complying with the USB-C regulation from the EU. They could have put the H2 chip as-well to keep up with the new features of AirPods Pro 2.
I have that sagging issue too! I was thinking it was maybe just my unit. Well, apparently they don't age very well in that regard.
One thing I'd love to know with USB-C is whether I can do audio over USB-C to USB-C, unlike the current gen's Lighting to 3.5mm.
I def use the AirPods at work (one ear at a time) but when im home i want the rich volume the Max’s deliver. Yes i use the eco system. It all works together.
My canopy is doing the same thing... Cuts into my head. Went to Apple and they won't replace it as it's wear and tear. Never thought mesh that is failing and hurting my head would be considered as part of the design.
The moment they announced the usb c one I directly went to amazon and bought old ones for cheaper. I was waiting for at least H2 upgrade but they didn't do any upgrades.
I got my Bowers & Wilkins Px8, Grade A, from CeX for £360.
Apple said very little about the APP2 sound improvement over the original model and yet they are so much better. I think there could be more coming they haven’t said yet, but it also could just be a minor upgrade as is now expected. They also did this with APP2 in the past.
I think the Max sound great and I have thousands and thousands in headphones and IEMs. Apple could provide a nice EQ (or an auto EQ) and I don’t think anyone would really need better. They also have the best microphones, but that may just be because it’s closer to the mouth than the APP2.
What you’re really getting with those other headphones is simply a different tuning. The drivers and amplifiers used in the Max are really well engineered. Because Apple is such a huge brand, they’re tuning for what their studies show are the most popular frequency response. This common tuning will moreso be for your average listener and not necessarily an audiophile who may want something different.
