I feel like a significant part of the problem is that the type of people who pursue the game development industry are often the same types that are maybe introverted, soft-spoken, and afraid to "step out of line".
I think the maybe majority of people who want to pursue game development might be, but the people who make it, especially in AAA, generally aren't. The industry is pretty cut throat given the massive supply of people who want to work in games who have the skills to deliver a product. A lot of people work on contract basis in games and don't want to risk losing that at renewal. The issue is that it's become standard and expected to crunch, so while there's more social awareness it's still an expectation for a lot of people and there a re a lot of people willing to crunch to be in the industry. The paradigm might be shifting, but it's not happening over night.
I feel like this is maybe just really common in general, and this industry is more well known in these parts because it’s what people are interested in / see most. Go ask any first year analyst in IB or someone in busy season in public accounting. Go ask any contractor at 90% of the Fortune 500 companies. It has nothing to do with the type of employee and everything to do with deminishing power of the employee, a flawed economic system and a culture that has brainwashed people into thinking this is ok, normal, and working 70+ hours a week is a badge of honor.
When I worked at Sam's Club everyone's hours got cut and my co workers were telling me that the general manager was having this talk with everyone about how we still needed to do in 4 hours what we had been doing in 8 hours. There was a job opening coming up that I wanted (also at Sam's club) so when my general manager came over to talk to me I asked him if I had done something wrong. He was taken aback because I was actually a hard worker and he said "no, why are you asking me this?" I told him he was basically giving me a pay cut by asking me to do the same amount of work in half the hours. He assured me it wasn't based on my performance but general cut backs. I used him confirming that I was good at my job to say "I got you on this, can you put a good word in for me for the position I wanted." He said yes, and 2 months later I got the position. I basically just leveraged the fact that he needed crunch time workers to step it up to get a better position. #grindset

Fire video. I've spent so much time thinking about how to mitigate crunch. There's a lot of good examples of indie devs who don't crunch and make more money than some AAA titles. It can be done!
3:50 the issue you have is peer pressure. And this mostly applies to the many, many people on the lower rungs. But even at a management level, you have peer pressure. It's not so easy to say 'fuck it' when you have a wife and kids. Plus once you get picked for a management position, I would assume one of the provisos is you're a self-driven workaholic or you have no qualms about forcing others through it.
I think that's the exact issue he is responding to, people who feel anxious to take steps that seem negative to higher authorities. He is trying to say that you just have more leverage than you think, that's all
Its funny what you say about leverage. My boss' boss let us know he's trying to find new people to expand and put a bounty out for recruiting people. This was in October. Anyways in my November performance review I made clear my expectation for more compensation. Raise came end of December, 12.5% increase on yearly base salary, plus I'm paid for my overtime based on that salary, and the base hours per week was changed to 36 with flex from 40. So now I earn 12.5% more in 36 hours than I did in 40 hours last year. Or in other words my compensation per hour is 25% higher in January than December. With it being flex too I'm encouraged to do things like I did this week, where I worked 3 9 hour days mon-wed and then am working a 9 hour one tomorrow. Today, Thursday, I had off. I went skiing. There were no crowds. Bottom line is the leverage line is right. Pay attention to when your employer is weak, and use that to get a better deal
Honestly, crunches seem like a great way to eventually kneecap the productivity of your employees. Work culture should really be based more around deliverables where possible. As someone who works in engineering, I'd much prefer if I was given a flexible schedule and a due date to finish my projects by. A typical 9-5 works pretty poorly for me, I usually put in high effort and get a lot of work done early in the morning after I have my coffee, then coast through the second half of the day. After talking to a ton of people in the field, it seems like most of us work this way.
The intro banter actually relates to me a lot, my mom is a med coder, bills people saved the company 18mil and got none but a friends dad who is a architect not even that high of a position got 600k of a 3mil deal he brought to the company to negotiate
Atrioc, yes, they will fire you. Usually they'll wait until the game has shipped and then they'll have a performance review and say something along the lines of "You're not being a team player" or "We've noticed you haven't been putting in your full effort" and then fire you.
Yeah, was looking for this comment. The worse thing imo, is that in the video already talks about the issue of getting blacklisted from other companies just for talking about working conditions of previous places. I imagine there's similar talking with regards to "doesn't death March with the rest of them, so look out while hiring."
How does chess change if queen’s movement is limited to some optimized distance? Does the endgame get more interesting because there’s more chance to recover? More risks taken mid-late game from losing side?
5:51 this worked until it didn't. The reason Apex is so much more popular than Fortnite today is because Respawn didn't add too much content, but they were able to add the content the players wanted. When epic games added so much content to Fortnite, they oversaturated the sandbox, thus ruining the flow and all the fun in the game. The biggest offender was the sword, that was so overpowered you were pretty much going to win automatically if you got it. That made people super mad with the game but epic couldn't really know and as such, they didn't nerf it in time and it literally ruined the game
