I noticed while checking the interview that I never circled back to the question: Why are German leaders subservient to the US? So I went back and asked John and here is his answer:
"Germany is subservient to the United States mainly because it fears that Washington will abandon Europe for East Asia. Given the US concern with the China threat, German leaders worry that America will “pivot to Asia,” which effectively means it will pivot away from Europe. This matters greatly to German foreign policy elites because they understand that the American military presence in Europe serves as a pacifier-it is principally responsible for peace in Europe. Thus, German leaders go to great lengths not to alienate the United Stares for fear that it would then leave Europe, which would mean Germany is responsible for its own security, a thought that scares most Germans half-to-death. To prevent that outcome, contemporary Germany invariably backs US policy, which is not always in Germany’s national interest. This was certainly the case in April 2008 when Angela Merkel supported the Bush administration’s foolish decision to bring Ukraine into NATO, even though she understood it would lead to enormous trouble with Russia."

There is another take on German stance which IMO is more convincing - German leadership knows perfectly well what is going on, but they are OK with it, because genocide that Germany committed on Jews will be relativized by Israeli genocide on Palestinians, in the eyes of German elite at least. The gravity of German "sin" will be made "easier" to carry when Israel becomes genocidal state who is mass murdering women and children.

Except my people didn't oppress black people for 250 years, it shows you how little you understand about the history of South Africa. South Africa, the Union of South Africa, is only a little over a hundred years old. And before the English unified the Union it did so over the corpses of the Boer republics and different black kingdoms at the time. So how exactly did my Boer ancestors oppress black people for 250 years? Can you give me an example?
The Cape Colony, which the English took over from the Dutch and started expanding into black kingdoms and the eventual Boer Republics, only started its expansion about 200 years ago, and they were a separate group from my people (the Boer) and the Cape Dutch who were also an entirely different group at that time subjugated by the English. Bantus aren't native of South Africa, they've been here for about 1500 years, during which time they displaced Khoi people (according to genetics they killed the men and took the woman which was normal in that period), so the question becomes how far do we go back to call people colonizers and non-natives and why?
You don't want to go into the question of the ethnic cleansing of German communities in the East after and before ww2, in some cases even before ww1, because it doesn't fit your political narrative to acknowledge Germans as human beings.

The reason most Palestinians have Egyptian and Syrian surnames is because their very recent ancestors migrated there when it was a British Mandate, looking for work, and prior to that from around 1900's when the Ottomans started building infrastructure such as railways. This lie of ownership now seems to be widely accepted but a simple Google search tells a different story. @@margaretcaine4219 Don't believe Israeli propaganda. It is mostly Palestinian land. See Wiki's page on the demographic history of Palestine for a more nuanced view eg Justin McCarthy......
...evidence for Muslim immigration into Palestine is minimal. Because no Ottoman records of that immigration have yet been discovered, one is thrown back on demographic analysis to evaluate Muslim migration..
From analyses of rates of increase of the Muslim population of the three Palestinian sanjaks, one can say with certainty that Muslim immigration after the 1870s was small. Had there been a large group of Muslim immigrants their numbers would have caused an unusual increase in the population and this would have appeared in the calculated rate of increase from one registration list to another... Such an increase would have been easily noticed; it was not there.
The argument that Arab immigration somehow made up a large part of the Palestinian Arab population is thus statistically untenable. The vast majority of the Palestinian Arabs resident in 1947 were the sons and daughters of Arabs who were living in Palestine before modern Jewish immigration began. There is no reason to believe that they were not the sons and daughters of Arabs who had been in Palestine for many centuries

Why do the neigboring states not help ? Even though support for Palestinian rights is overwelming, those are not democratic states so their leaders do not make decicions based on the will of the public.
I think Germany has a serious problem understanding this matter. According to international law, Gaza, west bank, east Jerusalem, Golan heights and the Jordan Valley are illegal settlements under International law. This means all unlawful settlers will have to be removed from those areas.

Good conversation but I think there was a major misconception implicit in one of Jasmin's questions during the Israel-Gaza section of this podcast. Her question implied that the Palestinians are i) a population of refugees, ii) that that has been their status since their displacement in 1948 and iii) they should come to terms with their loss and move on because iv) it is a foregone conclusion that they are not going to get their country back and their fight is therefore futile. That may or may not be true for Palestinians living in refugee camps in the surrounding Arab countries who might never be permitted back into what is today Israel proper. But what about the Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza? Granted some of them are refugees from the Nakba (1948) who were expelled from what became Israel. But they are now living on land - the West Bank and Gaza - where they are a clear majority and that does not legally belong to Israel. This land could form the basis of a Palestinian State in the event of a two state solution. Should they accept their permanent statelessness? Should they leave and go elsewhere as refugees to eventually be assimilated into another country? Or should they struggle for their rights and self-determination on territory which i) has historically been their's, ii) where they are still living as an overwhelming majority and iii) that has been earmarked by the United Nations as the basis of an eventual Palestinian state.

It is incorrect to say that the Palestinians are a majority in Gaza as jews are simply not allowed there. Gaza was free of jews since 2006, when Israel left Gaza completely in the pursuit of peace. What happened next was that Hamas took over. Gaza had the chance and the freedom to determinate themselves since 2006. Yet Hamas chose terror.
And unfortunately an overwhelming majority of Palestinians do not fight for and do not want a two-state solution. They want the whole territory and the jews gone. Check the channel „ask an Israeli/ask a Palestinian“. You will hear their answers.

Those in Gaza and Westbank should join Israel, the best choice they could make for themselves and their children. But they wont do that and probably even if they would want to now, I don't think Israel could accept it at this point. All sails a set for war now and the lines are as blurry as they have never been. Your remark about history is simply wrong for the fact that the history of this place is much older than the ethnic people identifying themselves as Palestinian. Heck the Islam is the youngest of the three big religions yet they have the wildest claims about history. Don't let these things get to your head, all religious fanatics will tell you the same no matter from which side. The logical choice would be to let history rest and settle with an agreement under which all involved people can be okay with. Issue is now, can you find such an agreement between people living a dogmatic philosophy?
If I had a say in German politics about this, I would withdraw any financial help for Palestine via UN and any help for Israel, UNTIL, both sides would stop any hostile actions and start seriously talking to each other how their people can live in peace.
And that will require from both to step back from historical and religious claims, and settle on the shared humanity. For someone not trapped in a dogmatic world view this seems rather simple.

      @salmankhawaja9626 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +10

@@svenr.8365 Your description of what happened in Gaza in 2006 is completely inaccurate. Gaza was occupied by Israel in 1967 during the course of a war. The Israeli settlements that were built in Gaza were illegal because under international law it is illegal to transfer a population into an occupied territory. Furthermore, the settlements, in both the Gaza and the West Bank, were a major obstacle to the peaceful resolution of the conflict because they undermined the viability of a future Palestinian state. When Israel left Gaza in 2006, they dismantled settlements (which should not have been there in the first place because they were a violation of international law), but they did not dismantle the occupation. In fact, they maintained their control over the borders, the surrounding waters as well as the airspace, deciding who and what could go in and go out. Over time, the occupation was turned into a brutal, suffocating siege which only allowed in the minimal number of calories to ensure Gazans had only just enough sustenance to survive. Gaza was turned into a barely habitable concentration camp, in order to make the lives of the Palestinian inhabitants unbearable so that they would leave. Moreover, the settler withdrawal from Gaza was part of a broader plan to accelerate settlement building in the West Bank, which was also a major violation of international law and which the Israelis proceeded to do immediately after "leaving" Gaza. They withdrew 8 to 9 thousand settlers from Gaza, but in the following year alone introduced 12 thousand new settlers into the West Bank.

@ Sorry, but this is complete nonsense.
First of all it is totally normal, that a sovereign state maintains control over it‘s own borders. This is part of the definition of being a state. And furthermore it is unevitable if Your neighbour endlessly commits terror attacs on Your country. This argument is childish.
And why do You think that Israel has any obligation to supply water to Gaza? Why do You not ask that from Egypt, that has a border to Gaza by the way too? Israel had no control of the border to Egypt, so all Your further arguments are nonsense too. How could Israel prevent Egypt from providing anything to Gaza from its own border?
Few other countries got such huge amounts of international aid that did Gaza. And where is all the money? No water supply. No own educational system. Nothing for the population. But terror tunnels and rockets. And Hamas leaders who are billionaires. And by the way: How did they leave Gaza to go to Qatar if it is so closed up? 🤦🏻‍♀️
If the situation would be the way that You describe it, I would agree with You. No doubt. But it is not.
Still I feel really sorry for the population of Gaza because they are being used by the iranian mullahs and other islamists to put pressure and to perpetrate terror on Israel. Gazans should be freed from Hamas and Iran.

She cut off John's response again and again, repeating herself, while declaring being "agnostic" on the issue... That was a WOW moments for me to experience someone who considers herself well-informed to sweat like that and as John pointed out , it shows the power of the Israeli lobbey- globally! And thanks to that attitude after 40000+ Palestinians murdered, our "fair" Jasmin simply suggests/implies that the Palestinian survival is worth a lot less than the survival of an Apartheid/mass murdering state. In this day and age, as Mearsheimer points out, it takes great courage, dedication, honesty and resilience to confront the truth , when it comes to Israel. I can highly recommend the internationally respected, award winning Israeli journalist, Gideon Levy who more or less says the same thing as John Mearsheimer. PS: one question Jasmin did not ask is this: "would the state of Israel need to/ could exist without the Holocaust? AND "should Germany be more responsible for the plight of the Palestinians because of the Holocaust?" ps2:A good interview . .

Put that in proportion to that Ukraine has destroyed over 9000 Russian tanks, over 18800 Armored Personnel Carriers and 20000 artillery units. The US has enormous stockpiles of phased out weapons in the desert. Also, in "other players" if you count other countries of the world, most of the world overwhelmingly supports Palestinian state and oppose Israeli Settlements. Its like asking and pleading a bully to stop bullying and then in the end asking the bullied to just leave because bully is not ready to stop. Further, such a position would never have been acceptable as being "agnostic" if it was a developed western nation in place of Palestine under occupation and genocide.otherwise your video is good. Its always good to hear Prof. Mearsheimer.

The interview was good until Jasmin became a pubescent teenager when it came to the Gaza genocide. I found that incredibly exhausting to watch. Initially, her professionalism was excellent, also the good English was remarkable. But then the hysterical little girl came out on the genocide issue. With such an outspoken expert in the interview, it was very embarrassing. Why can’t Germans accept the fact that Israel is committing a genocide? Is it so hard to face the facts?

In the end the interviewer threw out both logic and empathy..."why don't they" - emphasising that the Palestinians should simpy shut up shop and leave despite centuries of connection to the land.
And in the context of how other ethic groups & nationalities historically have endeavoured to push back when being disposed, why must the Palestinians be different or an exception?
Could you imagine telling an American or Englishman something like that if someone encroached on their property?
Also, as the Professor righty said, you need to think empathically. How would you feel if you were in the same situation as the Palestinians?
Lastly, the interviewer, ignorantly or arrogantly, or both, generalises, suggesting that Palestinians in essence are Arabs just like all the other people in the middle east are all Arabs
Imagine thinking this way about ALL the people in Europe?
Imagine thinking this way about ALL the people in Asia?

Jasmin, apartheid has nothing to do with percentages, majorities or minorities. But there is something important we need to rectify here: you seem to believe that in Israel "half of the population is Jewish and the other half is Palestinian". That's grossly wrong. There is a small percentage of Palestinians in Israel who are citizens and have a passport, but the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza are not, they live in a semi-occupation state, there is 6 million of them and have no status, and that's what constitutes the apartheid that John and other international institutions talk about. In 2024, especially when you're interviewing one of the best IR analysts in the world, you cannot possibly miss that essential point.

I appreciate what you're trying to say too, Jasmin. We'd all like a resolution to it. Please have on more people like Mearsheimer. Yes it's dark and largely disappointing knowing how terrible things are projected to play out. However, if we have more people like this that can communicate an effective analysis of the situation we can maybe hope that others can come along and start contributing towards a social synthesis that can resolve all these troubling concerns. Dear Ms Kosubek, having just heard the generally interesting and lively interview with John Mearsheimer, I was dismayed but not surprised by your reactions regarding the Palestinians. I am sure you did not mean it to sound like this, but at one intolerable point, it sounded so very much like Germany telling the Palestinians to shut up and be quiet, your train has come and gone. In fact, it is reactions like these that makes life for Palestinians in Germany so difficult. Why do you think you are in a position to tell Palestinians that their cause is not worthy? If anything, the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank and inside Israel in this last year but also in previous decades has strengthened Palestinians’ national feeling rather than weakened it, and every time this lecturing tone emanates from someone who has their own state and can take that for granted, Palestinians become more immune to that type of condescension. It is for Palestinians to decide about their struggle for liberation, as Mr Mearsheimer so clearly explained. Again, I do not think you intended the tone to be the way I have described, but that is exactly how it sounds. Still, I was grateful to hear this interview. It might contribute a tiny bit to, who knows, Germany’s eventual maturity and growth on this particular subject, its blind spot, but the country has a long way to go…
