- Hello scrappers and planet lovers. In this video, I take apart a metal cased sump pump to answer the question "do all sump pumps have aluminum windings, or can they also be made with copper windings?" I also tackle a heavily corroded pump to show you how to open it in order to get to the motor. I will show you how to safely and effectively identify and sort the metal in order to help maximize your profit and divert as much of the material away from the landfill as possible.

Great timing. Just replaced my sump pump and kept the old one. Will have plenty of scrapping fun...and dirty beat up hands.
Glad I put it out today then, although I was very surprised that all 3 of these pumps had copper windings, since many of the ones I have taken apart are aluminum. However, only one way to know for sure and that is to take apart. Thanks for watching and happy scrapping!

Pinch them contacts with some small wire cutters and bend the stem with pliers to get the contact free. They pop right out. Thats my focus these days. Going to the junkyard and filling a canvas grocery bag with relays for $10 then collecting the contacts. Using the copper spool to melt a bar then using the bar to cement the silver out of solution. 😉
The copper i collect, is worth more than what i pay by itself, so my silver is free....ish
Still bought the nitric, beakers and so on but......👍 right on! Btw im yielding %61-70 silver from the contacts. Not sure about other sources but everyone acts like they're plated. They are alloy. I posted a couple shorts about it.

Heavy rust? Soak in 100% vinegar for a few hours. Wire brush. Almost like new. Reuse vinegar.
yeah, but I think someone else was trying to open it since the heads of the screws were also damaged

A lot of mine are aluminum too, but I was amazed at the 3 I had since they were all copper windings, so they are out there. Unfortunately only one way to find out and that is to open them up and take that risk.
What do you do with mercury switches? Are they still sold?
Not sure, I have not come across any recently
My sump has a floating ball the closes a contact switch to initiate it. Never knew they ever had mercury switches.
Mercury switches use a float like that, but probably so do other methods. My sump pump around 1987 used a mercury switch. @@silver_salvage_savage
