Avg scrapyard in aust will give you $3 for that one. I used to use 1mm cutting discs but scored a plasma cutter at the scrapyard for $30 that only needed cleaning. Way quicker to open up now and save on discs. Use a large meat cleaver and hammer to split stator and copper in half, copper pulls out by hand most times. The average aircon compressor I get is about 1.2 kg copper wire, the average fridge comp. gives 700-800g copper wire.
I definitely want to get a plasma cutter.
Thank you for watching.
Great breakdown, and thanks for the shout-out, my friend. Good thinking on cutting the sides, too. Save a lot of discs that way.
Thank you buddy.
You’re welcome, thank you for your help.
Yeah that’s what I was hoping for, I’m glad it worked.
Sometimes those expansion chamber things are copper, and sometimes they have a flat piece of copper or steel with a bunch of holes in it, like a screen. I love your videos, somewhere you are helping a poor family be able to pay more of their bills. Don't be discouraged by the haters, the sad thing is people would rather hate then love, they would rather steal then share. Something I found works for me, instead of asking G-d for stuff, if I thank him for what I have I get more then I need. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and preventing all thatg copper, brass, aluminium and steel from going Into landfill.
That’s great to know about that sometimes being copper, thank you!
I absolutely agree and I try to remind myself that just because they spread hate, doesn’t mean that I should. Sometimes these people need love the most.
That’s so true and most my prayers are just thanking God for who He is and all the blessings I already have.
Thank you for watching and for your comment.

Whatever the small " capsule" is called- the older ACs were Copper. The Yard I go to wants them flattened. Inside are pellets and oil. Great idea Kid- using a hook blade. Lol I use the cut off saw. I took 2 Compressors apart and the motors were square shaped like one from a vacuum cleaner.
Pellets? Theres just oil inside and scrap yards will buy them as they are.
This one I drained all the oil out

Hello Brother, another great video 👍
I'll have to get some of those cutting wheels.
Thank you brother, I appreciate that.
I’ve been using them for a couple years and I’m very pleased with them.
I only use the 1mm thick cutting disks these days- the 1.6mm ones just bounce around, taking twice the time to cut, been over 10 years since I changed.
@@rossbrumby1957 cool! I like the ultra thin ones too
I have always pondered whether I should cut these sealed units like you did, or just take them to the yard for the few cents per pound. I like dismantling stuff, especially scrap, so I think I will cut apart the few I have and get that copper! Be aware that some of those expansion tubes on the sides can be copper. I scrap these all the time! I pay 25c a pound for all sealed units. And use basically the same method for cutting them open. The only thing I do different is I cut one end of the stator and just pull the rest through the bottom. It's always interesting to see how other people break these down.
I typically cut stators in half with a machete, works incredibly well.

It would take a constant flow of sparks to catch the oil on fire, more than likely will just smoke.

That oil has no more chance of catching fire from being cut open than petrol igniting by looking at it. Use an oxy set if you like, it will only ignite if you get it boiling properly.

Some of those Capacitators can still hold an Electric charge for a week!!!!! One has to ground the capacitance to the compressor with a screwdriver. I told my Appliance Repair friend and he said it's true. I've never been electrocuted yet.
Yes it’s definitely true, but I’m curious why you mentioned capacitors when there wasn’t one in the video.

Someone on another channel said the sticker or color of the sticker on the outside determines if the inside is copper or copper coated aluminum. Not sure if that's true in all cases but maybe a video in the future to see if that's true. Wouldn't go through all that for copper coated ones.

Me too, I definitely prefer taking that kind of stuff apart more so than stuff that requires cutting.
May the Good Lord bless you!
How long did it take you? Not asking to be a pain but that needs to be worked into the equation as well. Time + Equipment Need/Cost are the 2 things I look at when debating should I do this. For sealed units I normally shy away more from the mess and issue of oil more so than anything. Was nice that yours was pretty much empty. Great knowledge though - thanks for sharing.
About 20 minutes I’d say. The oil for me is the biggest bugaboo. For many it might just be easier to sell as is and not have to deal with recycling the oil properly.
Thank you buddy!
I cut them all open but i have a plasma cutter so i can open them pretty fast. i mentioned this on thubprints video that once i get them home, i keep them stored in an upright position and if i move them carry them that way too. this way when i do get around to opening them up all the oil is in the bottom and i can cut them all open standing up keeping my cutline above that knob that sticks out so i have no big mess with the oil. less than 30 seconds and they are open up.
That’s awesome! I’ve been wanting a plasma cutter but it’s just been a low priority. Yuh have a brand you’d recommend?
Thank you for watching.
@@scrapitall200 mine is a miller 625 but it isn't a cheap machine but i had it for many many years now and the price is up on it compared to what i paid. but in these times there are so many companies and they are some so cheap, i hate to recommend seeing i basicly just run that one old one and i grew up with miller welders with my dad's business having usually 10 of them at a time around here so i was influenced toward them and when i saw our vendor selling the plasma at the swap meet at a discounted price do to a design change that year and he recognized me gave me an additional discount on top of that. so it would be unfair for me to recommend one but the miller is nice but not cheap and still going strong but there might be other brands just as good now at a cheaper more affordable price for beginners. mine as paid for itself many times over.
Thank you for your honesty.
Millers are great, my dad has a big Miller welder, I think it’s like 30 years old and still is working like a champ.

mine can cut up to 5/8 so since i brought the plasma i never pickup a torch anymore seeing most of my scrap isn't over that. .

The one's I find are always filled with oil, that one was a home run.
I have a 160 pound transformer but its got this resin hard stuff poured into its bottom, its still incased in metal, should I try to scrap it or leave it be?
I was so happy it hardly had any oil.
If it’ll break apart easily I would try and clean it all, but if it’s going to be really tough, just sell it as a transformer.
I always wonder if there is not a way to gain extra from the big chunk of aluminium on both sides of the rotor.ali is about 5 times the price of prepared steel.whats your thoughts on best way to recover cutting off or smelting off I have not come across anyone yet recovering the ali.
The only way I know how is to put it inside a crucible and melt the aluminum out of the steel but there really isn’t much weight in aluminum, so I don’t think it’s worth it.
Thank you for watching.
I sell them the way they r I have no time for them at all my other yard gives me 55gal metal barrels for my sealed units I fill the barrel to top with them then I bring them in most of time about 900lbs worth about 6 times a year or more I’m on barrel #2 for year and it’s over half way and have good amount of ac and mini fridge to scrap out
That’s awesome! They are definitely good money just the way they are. I rarely get them so I don’t mind doing them now and then.

Good work sir
Is it possible to remove the aluminum parts of the two ends on the rotor ?

Not from what I’ve learned and have seen. It’s a tiny amount of aluminum incased in steel. You could melt the aluminum from the steel but I don’t believe the effort would be worth it. It’s probably 5 cents in aluminum.
