Thanks, Mike! Mineral spirits is used to prime the system/flush out the pump protector at startup and for cleanup. For water-based products, you'd use water. No need to thin anything. I just used the 515 tip that came with the X5. Worked fine!
What a great video! I would never trust myself with a spray gun. I have always rolled out our oil based stains for the decks. I chuckled about your “tan” as it probably was a good dose of that stain.
Great presentation from a novice painter. Killer house and decks. You used one of the best user friendly products on the market today. It is bad ass in my 41 years of painting experience. Your deck prep is beyond impressive. Waiting to paint or stain pressure treated lumber for a year is a a great idea as well. You are the man to listen to for those homeowners who do DIY projects.
By using "oil-based" stain you "Sir" got it going on ! That water-based stain is just "Envro-colored Water";= 96% a was of time & money. Oil-based stain is "Rare&Expensive " but ABSOLUTELY the BEST. An Excellent Job "my good Man". Thank you Sir for the Excelent vidio and happy safe home improvements. Best wishes with all your endeavours.
Excellent demonstration. I have the same sprayer and will be staining my 15x20 deck and 3 step stairs in a month using ready seal as well. I saw you used 8 gallons for 2 coats. So you know the square footage your deck and railing? I'm trying to figure out how much stain I'll need with the over spray.
Thanks! I didn't calculate an exact square footage, but this was 800 SF of decking alone, plus the associated railings and stairs. I'm going to do a test this fall and see if it's more efficient to brush by hand on a smaller deck.
Very helpful video! Are you using sprayer for speed? I would think wood could absorb roller stains better. How’s the stain holding up after a year? How often should deck be restained? Love your big backyard. Thank you!
Yes, sprayer is used solely for time savings and wear and tear osurfaces. The wood wouldn't likely absorb any more with a brush or roller, but there is some waste with oversray. I will fall into a groove of re-applying Ready Seal every other spring for horizontal surfaces like decks. Holds up much better on vertical surfaces.
Nice video I was worried i wouldn't be able to use the sprayer but looked pretty easy for a beginner to be able to do Is there any reason you bought the model or brand of the sprayer you have? TIA
Thanks! It's pretty straight forward. I watched a few reviews on middle-of-the-road airless sprayers for a professional homeowner like myself and this one kept popping up as one that'd do what I needed and would last. So far so good!
Two questions: I only pressure washed and sanded my 84 Lumber pressure treated wood deck floor after 1 year. I brushed stain on. Here are my questions: 1. I can’t see where 2 coats is recommended (even on ready seal sight). So, why 2? 2. Surface is slick after 2 days. Is that normal? Thanks!
@RobAnderssen my can says " use two light applications with at least 45 minutes between coats". I haven't experienced the slick conditions; clean, dry wood is important, perhaps you sanded to too high a grit?
Ok thanks. It looks great! I messed up and put water based stain on my deck after I built it in 2015 and have spent the last few weekends tearing all the rotten boards out and replacing them and I’ve already purchased the ready-seal pecan, now just waiting on my new boards to dry enough to stain.
great job but next time get yourself a full face mask and respirator. I'm sure that stuff isn't good getting absorbed in your lungs and through your eyes.
Great video. Saw mineral spirits. Did you have to thin the stain? What graco tip did you use? Thanks!

Thanks! Lots of time cleaning windows after this. It pretty much gets everywhere...

Thanks for the kind words. Agreed, fantastic product.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Fantastic help.
It was my pleasure! Thanks for watching.
Awesome video and info Mitch ❤
Thanks, Sandy!
Yep, I used the very same products on my fence. Happy so far!
Awesome.

Thank you, Sir! Well-worth the extra hassle of dealing with oil-based. I appreciate it!
Great video! Your deck looks amazing. I like the color you used.
@tammiej9674 Thanks! We still like the color too.
Super hard to watch this without proper PPE. Thanks for the video though. Was curious how the light oak color turned out. Cheers.
Thanks for toughing it out! Everyone loves the color. Use it on tons of things throughout the property; fences, picnic tables, benches...

@@Academy_Farm gotcha, thank you!

PPE? Clothing, glasses, mask? I would not attempt this without them!

did you ground the can of stain like you were supposed to?
I didn't read that part of the instructions... it was in a plastic bucket on the ground the whole time.😅
Hey man do you know what size tip you’re spraying with?
@@johnmartin5153 I used the 515 tip that came with this sprayer.
Did you use all 5 gallons of the stain or how much did you have leftover?
I used about 8 gallons for 2 coats on the 3 decks. I found the square footage estimates on the can to be pretty accurate.

hi handsome. Great channel and product review.
Thanks!
wearing a mask would be a good idea.
@@davefreeman1499 agreed!

Thanks! If I can still see and breathe by the time it’s due for another coat I’ll be sure to wear proper PPE!
@@Academy_Farm 😂 I’m sure you will be fine if anything I bet those clothes bead water super well now 😂
@@Academy_Farm I’d bubble wrap myself so your viewer’s don’t lose any sleep worrying about you.
@Giannis3434 too hot out that day for a face mask or bubble wrap 🤣
