The Rogue Tesla Mechanic Resurrecting Salvaged Cars

  • Rich is a car enthusiast whose passion is to find wrecked Teslas, bring them back to life, and then share his repair adventures on his TH-cam channel Rich Rebuilds.
    When he found out that Tesla would not service or support his salvaged cars, he took it upon himself to scour the internet and harvest working parts from several busted Teslas. He Frankensteined them together until his creations were fully operational, at a fraction of what it would cost to buy a new or certified pre-owned Tesla.
    Motherboard travels to Massachusetts to meet with the rogue mechanic leading a grassroots movement of DIY fixers who are taking back the right to repair the things they own.

      in simple terms. receive a fix it ticket cracked windshield 🤔 its their property your responsibility is to maintain it. tags expired? or yearly tax? how can you be taxed on something you own? you can't!

    This guy is awesome. I've been a mechanic for 45 yrs,& saw this coming since the early 80's,when they started putting computers in cars. I've seen hundreds of cars in the junkyard that are newer & in better condition than the ones I own & drive. They're too expensive to fix,most people can't fix them,so they buy another one. It's great for the manufacturer,but bad for the customer,& the environment.

    • @trescohen8232

      @danielschoenherr2650 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      This will only get worse going forward. Especially in the higher end vehicles with the kick-ass infotainment setups. You'll have to find a car in the junkyard and gut it just to restore your backup camera, (the stuff that Rich does.) There will be no documtation anywhere, but then again the junkyard itself may not exist at all anyway.(See Japan.)

      TBone4Eva Tesla is concerned with an accidental deployment of an airbag. The airbag came originally with the vehicle. The brake pads you put in are not original to the vehicle. Tesla most likely does not want to go through the hassle of someone trying to bring a lawsuit against them. Hence why a trained technician.

    “...if you pay your hard-earned money, you should be able to fix your own car yourself.” Believe it or not, all manufactures are going in this direction; Teslas by far the worst, but most modern cars need special dealership tools and computers to do even the simplest tasks. I applauded Rich for being both a pioneer and an advocate for owner repairs with not only Tesla’s but all modern vehicles. To lose the ability to repair a product you purchase and solely having to rely on the manufacturer is a loss of your freedom and puts you at the mercy of someone else.

Had I known that prior to dropping a wad on a '87 K75- I would've bought something else. Here's what I think: ALL dealerships should be required to service ALL vehicles manufactured by said mfg.

      ugggggggghhhhhh... sadly.
      I've met so many folks, many older than me (30yr), who do not even know how to change a tire. I know it is not to the same caliber of fixing your vehicle, but I wasn't even allowed to have the keys for mine until I was able to demonstrate I could do it all by myself, cus, uh, they did not want to have to come to my rescue for a flat. I mean, anyway, it's the least you could do when gifted the privilege of operating fast, heavy road torpedoes around other small, weak fleshlings as us.
      My grandparents raised me, so I guess maybe I had more exposure to cool old stuff built really well and taken care of for decades, than fellow 90s kids growing up with crappy plastic goods everywhere that were Made in China, since things were easier and cheaper to just toss and replace. I was so bummed when I got to high school and there was no "Shop Class" as TV had promised. I'm excited for kids nowadays tho with all of the cool circuitry, coding, tinkering, engineering, science-y kits and stuff readily encouraged and accessible. Now if we can work on sustainability, as well. We were taught "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle", but every year the voice of "Overindulge single use items, then toss" gets louder and more frequent. America has a small, but growing, minimalist movement, but our reputation holds pretty true about oversizing everything. I personally am of the *original* Church of MacGyver practice and have always loved puzzling things together for renewed life. And then, as for recycling, my neighborhood only started regular service a few years ago, previously only upon request, which is weird because our household and street, 15 min away, always had the service as long as I can remember, and even still my region only offers Single-Stream, which has a ton of problems. Unfortunately, the incentive still just isn't there for most businesses to change their practices to reduce/repackage/source better materials on their end, while many areas still either don't have the facilities set up for citizens or they make it such a chore that only the really conscientious or passionate will endure it.
      For an idea of what it is like to be an American right now, watch Idiocracy; though exaggerated, we are quickly becoming not far off from that reality.

    • @coololds4464
      @coololds4464 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But yeah, like he said, there's a revolution coming. I noticed this years ago when I became really interested in the Tiny House movement. There are a bunch of really cool niche groups in so many fields, with passionate members whose core beliefs and functions are of Sustainability through Community, that I have no doubt Progress will eventually take the lead, the question is just of when.

    The scariest thing I can think of that is extremely close to this topic is farm equipment manufacturers limiting and denying the use of the diagnostic software that allowed the farmers to fix their own machines. These large companies are creating monopolies with their products that makes the buying of one of their items a contract that binds you to them. This is definitely a reform worth working with as many companies keep limiting the ability of the customer to be independent. I'm not sure if any of this rambling made any sense but I figured if one person could be lead to deeper research into the topic it would be worth commenting.
    Thanks for reading.

      I see some people do not understand what will happen if you mess with one of these cars. Here is a simple answer, THEY WILL BLOW UP.
      These cars are meant to be serviced by trained technicians. One wrong touch on a wire will cause your instant death, leaving you a sizzling mess on the floor. If you touch any of the wires together, you can fry the entire system or short them and cause a heck of a lot of damage.
      The main reason Tesla hates rich is because of this. If one of his cars blows up on the road or the autopilot starts acting weird and crashes the car, it will look really bad for Tesla. I’m sure some of you may have heard about some of the crashes on the road from Tesla’s, and news reporters saying that they might not be safe. Yet they never talk about the other thousand crashes that occur on the road from any other car brand.
      TLDR, this is bad publicity for Tesla if something goes wrong.

      Tesla is going to need him some day? Ya, ok. And this man is not stupid but, brilliant? No. Nikola Tesla was brilliant. Einstein brilliant. I can spin off 10 or 15 people in 10 or 15 seconds that can put a salvaged Tesla back together, including myself. Brilliant! Genius! Come on people!

      @@BONFIRERG. In their homes, at work, friends house's, etc. Did not say this guy is dumb...but a genius? Someone Tesla is going to need at some point? Come on, really? 20 years ago at my auto tech business we used take two late model wrecks and with top of the line frame machine and make one great fully restored inspectable car (not a Tesla...Buick Regals). The shops CNC machine could mill a new aluminum head if need be or tech's could together an engine harness consisting of a hundred different wires where each one had to be inspected to insure it was correctly led to where it was suppose to go. And then check each part on the other end electronically to see if the part was good. This man in the video is just electronically and mechanically handy. And he has the will to do it. Same as myself, same as the other 15 or 20 I know and I would venture to estimate same as a certain percentage of viewers that have seen this video. Here's a test for us; a survey if you will to prove my point. Any viewers reading this that believe they have the technical ability to put a wrecked Tesla back together please respond by checking a thumbs up. And for anyone that feels the need a thumbs down if you can not. This ofcourse is not a science and will not actually be real proof but, what the hell...who here is a tech and believes he/she has this skill or aptitude...give a thumbs up or down.

    He said this so well 6:40 , we live in a society where you purchase and when it breaks you just buy a new one. Cars are design and put together to last through a cycle of lease and then just get a new lease on a new car. I buy cars that are maybe 20 years old with between 150,000 to 200,000 miles and drive those till they break

    He's right thought about learning to fix your own car. I own a Toyota Yaris hatch back and i took it to Firestone because my right passenger window wasn't going up when it was down and it was suppose to rain the day it took it there. They charge you a 65$ inspection fee. They had me there for 45 minutes just to tell me the motor was bad and they were gonna charge me 746 to fix it. And if i didnt wanna do that they were gonna charge me 110 just to take the window off the motor and put it on a cleat but they couldn't guarantee that it wouldnt fall and break.
    Long story short, i went home, took out the passenger window switch apart and one of the prongs in the button was just broken. I ordered a new switch and The new switch only cost 12 bucks! I just stuffed the old one with electric tape until the new one arrived and that same day i got my refund for the inspection!

      For them to tell you the motor was bad they would have to take off the door panel and bench test the motor. So they lied to you. Don't let water get on those switches. Wipe the rain off. Best thing is to do what you did. Depend on yourself and don't be afraid to try to fix it yourself.

      if tesla ever expects to become a market leader in the future of cars, they need to help integrate 3rd party repair services with their proprietary hardware and software. they dont have the resources to franchise repair shops around the globe.

    • @davidlee2221
      @davidlee2221 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AmpHibious I see your point, but also, keep in mind that EVs don't have nearly the same presence in the market as gas autos do at this point. Im sure that once they become more common, 3rd parties will have a better chance of successfully operating EV repair shops. And the tools needed will probably become more common. If Tesla wants to keep their secrets, then let them. It will only make them less desirable in the end, and increase competitive business in the EV market.
