A good way to check for platinum in the field with either rocks or specks is with hydrogen peroxide. Put the rocks or pieces in peroxide and see if it bubbles. You can also prospect for platinum with a neodymium magnet, since platinum often alloys with iron. Platinum that does not alloy with iron will not stick. I subscribed. Thanks again.

@@woofielove1970 no, it’s not different one bit. So many natural occurring things can cause the water to get muddy. Rockslides, mudslides, rainstorms, floods, deer walking in the water, just to name a few. Mud, dirt, rocks, sand, silt, that all settles back to the river floor, how do you think it got there? The water may look “pristine” but if you went under with goggles you’d see how much free floating silt there really is. What he’s doing is completely legal, in non protected areas on his claim. Take your toxicity elsewhere, he’s enjoying his life a lot more than you bum.

Hi Dan!! I"ve been watching you for a few days.... and I subbed. I'm not gold/mineral crazy. I live in CA. I used to care for an older gentleman who had a bigger than fist size white rock with gold running through it. He had to go stay at the hospital and took his rock with for his bedside table. I asked a senior nurse if there was any risk of it getting stolen. The nurse laughed and said no risk. She had lived in CA for many years. She said the effort of getting that gold out of that rock was so difficult that it's only value was as a rock. And apparently, many people around there had a lot of those kinds of rocks with gold everywhere. I enjoy your vids for the scenary, and the science. I never knew crystals came out of red clay in Arkansas. You really get around. Thanks and see you in the next vid. HUGS

Just got around to watching this one. Not disappointing at all. Still looks like you had fun hiking checking out all the wild flowers. Oh, Dan! About your poison oak/ivy situation, there is this stuff called Zanfel. It's a bit on the pricey side but it works incredible! Trust me I know. We have lots of poison oak here and I get it bad if I rub against it. I would not recommend anything else after finding this product. I keep a tube at home and one in my bag when I'm out hiking, just in case. Anyway, thanks for the video Dan. Looking forward to your next adventure.

I just looked up the process to purify platinum ore . Article said 7-9 tons of ore and 6 months to yield 1 Troy ounce bar. Multiple chemical, pulverizing, and heat steps to remove all the unwanted minerals. Palladium is going for record prices and Platinum Group Metals are often found together. Seems like you need high grade ore and deep pockets to mine and process those metals.

    • @cacogenicist

I'm guessing it's actually more Pacific Poison _Oak_ in those parts -- exactly the same toxic substance, though. Western Poison Ivy is generally shrubby, as is Pacific Poison Oak -- although there's a sort of sub-variety of Pacific Poison Oak that vines up trees, which the Western Poison Ivy doesn't do. :-)
Western Poison Ivy has pointy tips on the leaves, and Pacific Poison Oak has lobed leaves which can turn quite red and shiny in late summer.
For people not used to dealing with those plants, some advice:
Be careful taking a leak in woods where that stuff grows -- do it, uh, _hands-free._ You do not want that stuff below the belt, trust me. It _can_ spread there _without_ direct oil contact, but it definitely will with it.

    • @Rottsy1
      @Rottsy1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Poison oak can also grow into a tree, in and of itself! I learned this through a very, very painful backyard experience. The wood (of what I thought was a dead tree) turns a blackish color when cut. Fortunately, I knew there was Poison oak where I was, so I scrubbed well afterwards. Unfortunately, it was a very hot day and I had been sweating quite a bit. The next day, I could hardly see.
Our backyard also has the vine type covering many of our oak trees.
A stinging nettle poultice (applied through a heavy linen bag does help!

Is mica worth anything? When I was growing op in western North Carolina we always found big sheets of mica in the banks of rock and clay. This was on a old logging road behind our house in Maggie Valley N. C. That went up into the mountains. I am going to be up there for a few months in October and am going to some places I used to explore. I love the Smokey mountains. They are magical. Been in a lot of different mountain ranges but the Smokies are the best by far.

Do you ever watch Jeff Williams TH-cam channel? He’s a geologist explained in great detail on what to look for when searching for gold platinum or silver or other precious metals.
That rock that you found great interest in when you were leaving the creek, look like what he was talking to be whatever the chemistry was to have lots of gold. Now I don’t know for sure all the chemistry that goes on to the final results, but I try very hard to understand though all people in surcharging of there findings.

I think the "shiny rock" is a type of iron ore.. all I know for sure is if you cut and polish it it looks AMAZING! I'd take a gallon bucket of that black mica.. stuff would make some insane black metallic paint when finely ground. Poison oak has nice dark green shiny leaves with a dark red in them.. I should know, I was shoved into a big patch of it in 6th grade while taking a leak when we went on a nature weak thing.. Fun fact, at the time at least, I wasn't allergic to it.. bad part for them, they were.. and I happened to grab some when I saw it the next day.. I wonder how it ended up in their bunks... hmm..

Similar leaf structure, they're just finger leaves instead of fan leaves. No clue what it is but it's probably not cannabis, unless the ABC mutation has made it up into the wilds of Canada.

    • @davidslefort6541

Well I guess poison ivy is mortal to me cause it takes 30 seconds for me to be in agonizing pain and it worse and worse by the second and I get huge water blisters men and the way to get rid of it you put an entire bottle of dish soap into the tub and you submerge the affected areas and it works well take 5 minutes or so but you feel the pain going away but you are left with water blisters

It may be different for everyone as I see a blistery rash forming within about ten minutes of exposure. If I notice that I touched it and immediately wash up I usually get lucky, but if I don't I'll have a rash for a month or more covering most of my body.

One time years ago at an estate sale I bought a bunch of silver jewelry for alot of money. England stuff and very old. Little did I know most of it was platnum. I went to get some melt down for my silver drawer and an honest man at the jeweler whisper to me , hey this stuff is mostly platinum , not silver. I never knew , I was disappointed , then he said it's worth more than gold too. WOW. I got ripped off from the first place I sold it too , they also checked it and lies , told me it's silver . I ended up with over 26 thousand in platinum . Even the family selling the estate was sure it was only silver. All was unstamp very old platinum. I love the look of platinum as well for chains or rings. Thanks for share. Great you can mine for this stuff. Platinum is allways worth more than gold .

Thanks for sharing your prospect adventures with us, even if they aren't successful. Gives a reality check... love the scenery. You live in a beautiful part of the world. Try Technu for poison ivy. The liquid that smells like fish oil works better than the sprays and crimes. It was developed by one of the depts (conservation, maybe) years ago. I apply it before adventuring out, then again afterward. Wash it off with water as hot as you can tolerate, then repeat. It speeds up the drying of blisters that have escaped the wash process, as well. Good luck.
