    That's the constant struggle with music. New hardware might allow you to do more/better/different things, but often doesn't let you do the old things properly anymore. It seems a lot of people are having buffering issues on the Mac Studio with pre-existing projects -- turning up the latency helps, but that's just trading one problem for a different problem.
    Even without switching to a new computer there are audio gear issues: I usually run one macOS release behind just due to driver compatibility (I use a MOTU DAW and, like many DAW makers, they're usually well behind the OS releases).
    Congrats on the new space!

    Thanks for the cautionary tale. Many of us have lost parts of old projects due to OS upgrades before M1 (such as projects with 32-bit plugins in the shift to Catalina) so this is of course something to prepare for in the shift to the new chip.

    I'm still on a Mac Pro Trashcan as my primary computer and I wanted to get into the 2019 mac pro as soon as the Apple Silicon Mac Pro comes out - I'm expecting to be able to get something for a bit less expensive (and upgrade via third party ram) the way you did it back in your initial mac pro 2019 videos. I'm about 3 years behind everyone, but it's worth having everyone else battle test the computers before I move my primary programs and utilities over to it! Thanks for posting your experiences!

  • @Wokiis
    @Wokiis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Can relate. Had one day free where I could test running Avid Media Composer on Apple Silicon. It worked in a vacuum but once connecting to NEXIS workspaces and handling titles and effects set up in real projects there were just so many issues popping up. It could even make the Mac freeze and kernel panic. Not good times.
    The poster boy against all trouble seems to be DaVinci Resolve where things seemingly just work for the vast majority of the time and you get miracle processing speeds. Too bad that in the real world I can't exactly ask everyone else to switch software.

    I have the 16" M2MAX 96GB and the only instability I have seen has been from 3rd party plugins. I'm still running logic in Rosetta (intel) mode for plugin compatibility. It's the only software on my machine in "intel" mode. As for logic itself on Ventura 13.4, it is rock solid on my system. Ive had "M" series machines since the original M1 MacBook Pro. As for major architectural changes go, it's crazy stable in most situations. Software plugins are the last "Hurdle" im waiting to completely clear. It's very usable with the plugins I have, but I agree with Neal that there are manufactures out there that aren't prioritizing "M" series chips. To be able to harness the raw power of these chips would be amazing. Even in Rosetta mode, I have het to find the limits of the M2 MAX. Even the M1 16GB will chew through just about everything thrown at it ( even RED camera footage ). 'sigh'

    Audio stuff is always the last to run on new architecture, so I'm not surprised about how this went for you. Seems like it's still not quite time yet to transition. I went through this with the PowerPC to Intel move and boy did I regret getting one of the early machines. It took literally years for all the Audio stuff to upgrade and for some of my gear they just dropped support altogether - expensive paperweights. So, this time instead of upgrading to one of the M1 machines I actually built a Hackintosh to wait it all out. I'm even still on Mojave because some of my audio plugins are still 32Bit. Discontinued stuff that will never get ported and that I'm unwilling to give up. So I'll deal with the new architecture when my Hackintosh can't keep up anymore, which will be years and years from now since there is still a lot of scope for upgrades on it.

      @@NeilParfittMusic It was a traumatic experience for sure! And to be honest, nothing was ever as stable again as my G4 ibook. I still miss that thing! I once didn't restart it for 100+ days as a bet with a friend who ran Linux. Rock solid! Can barely make it to a month now on the Intels and my last 2 genuine Macbooks died of Logic board failure due to thermal problems. Husband has an M1 and even though he doesn't do audio stuff he keeps complaining about all the bugs, instabilities and delays.

    I'm glad someone has made this video. I've been hearing many of the same complaints around my group of audio buddies about inconsistencies and frustrations with the new M1 Mac's. As you say it's down to use case, but in the real world where time is money no-one has the time to be sorting out a load of little glitches which all add up. As for the opening old sessions problem - it's almost getting to the point where you have to keep old computers and hardware around and in service just to guarantee it's possible. I'm sure in some ways it was much easier back in the 'olden days' prior to computers ;)

  • @amdenis
    @amdenis ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure what you expect when you don’t wait until at least 9-12 months after release. It takes that to ensure you have given enough time for all the plugin and instrument vendors to catch up. It is at least 75% the third parties that cause initial incompatibilities. Now that I upgraded to an Ultra, I never have to worry about how many plugins, instruments, splitting ATMOS or the size of orchestrations or having to add buffering and deal with increased latency. I can even track at Apollo DSP latencies with almost any plugin I like to use for tracking now too. What a difference, but you cannot expect to successfully upgrade a Windows, Mac or Linux system within weeks or months of release and not have issues.

    • @NeilParfittMusic

    • @NeilParfittMusic
      @NeilParfittMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      There's still some straggler big 3rd party VI's that are taking forever to get their stuff native. Also keep in mind this was almost 8 months ago. The march of time is on our side. When did you do it?

  • @LeeBlaske
    @LeeBlaske 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No way around it, access to old sessions gets more iffy with every day that they age. I think the only way you could be sure about access would be to park a system every year or two with legacy software. That, and just bounce out audio for every important session track by track, so you can at least have access to something.

    • @Roikat
      @Roikat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s it. My backward compatibility suggestion for Mac is always to keep old Macs working in case you need to open sessions and bounce things. Keeping systems supporting plugins consistently over time with OS upgrades and plugin developer business philosophy transitions gets tedious and will certainly lead to me being more selective about plugin installs in the future as well.

    I got the Mac Studio too and it's been a nightmare trying to get it to work with my OWC ThunderBay 8. It just crashes every time it boots up because Apple's M1 I/O controllers/drivers apparently can't handle external RAID5 volumes, which isn't great when you have a 112TB external DAS for work. So until Apple fix it, I can't use it, which is just insane.

    I have my Mac Studio Ultra running Pro Tools Flex. Was there troubleshooting involved, Issues with other software/hardware developers? Yes, but this should to be expected. Did I have to have to push projects back? Yes, I explained to my clients what I was doing and they understood. Are my WAVES plugins functioning? Yes! Are my large Orchestration libraries running better than ever? Yes! Was the experience stressful? ABSOLUTELY! I moved from a 2011 Mac Pro that was, at times, choking on large surround sessions but after 11 years of literally non stop running; I could not ask for more. Obviously, experiences and pain thresholds vary. I would never change from a system that is already doing what I am asking of it.

    I traded in my iMac Pro for a Mac Studio, there have been issues, it's very difficult to say which issues are M1/Compatibility, Monterey, or just issues moving/copying/re-installing libraries and plugins.
    l feel like I changed too much making isolating issues nearly impossible. I seemingly had issues with my aging Apogee Duet 2 and used it as an excuse to pull the trigger on an Antelope Audio ZenQ, which only added another variable to the bug mix, I guess my Duet is fine?
    I have definitely felt some sample library pain with Spitfire Audio, some notes randomly not playing, and in general being a painful experience to install/reinstall/repair. I miss the days of Target Disk Mode, holding Option to boot from a firewire drive, or easily cloning a system onto another? Yes... but security is apparently why we can't have nice things anymore.

    What I have found it is the CPU that causes a lot of issues I support a couple of sound engineers and radio stations. The M1 CPU architecture is so different from Intel that little things seem to cause the biggest issues with logic and some of the radio station support hardware. I expected better from Apple especially because of there target audience for that product. I have a leg up on you being so close to Silicon Valley and having friends working in Apple and some of the finger pointing between Apple and some of theses venders is just sad. Especially when Apple takes away a lot of venders “hacks” to make a feature work properly. Or some of the code they have been using for years is now not able to run because it is taking advantage of a certain feature in a processor that Apple does not include on their new processors. People don’t realize the software is only as good as a hardware and Intel puts a lot of discrete logic in their processors that is useful for the industry. That may mean nothing to the average Joe who uses Microsoft Word. But could make a big difference to some of these higher end programs need to make a feature work. I even found that some departments in Apple don’t communicate with the Hardware division so hardware that could be in last years produce can be removed from this years product because the new engineer did not know why that component was installed and think it was really not needed and just remove it out of the latest revision. We have now adopted the policy but the same hardware from the same run so that way you’re assured that it’ll work. A lot of times we will buy extra computers just to put on the shelf and have them in standby.

      its always good to research, especially in the face of an entirely new chip. Most people dont even know what intel or apple silicon even means. Heck I remember when apple "introduced" their new file system APFS. it was a MAJOR change in a lot of ways. Apple barely mentioned the impact this would have. I knew because I research everything when it comes to downtime in the studio. I do appreciate the new architecture, in some ways its light years ahead of intel. weve become trapped in an archaic chip design and programmers have become so lazy and just used yearly clock speed improvements or faster cache to cover it up. its like what happened with Flash. some flash instances got so lazy and heavy that it would bog down the entire system. when apple banned flash I totally understood it. but its a shame so many changes happen and people aren't aware. most dont even know about native VS rosetta. the M1 is one hell of a move in the right direction

    One thing to consider, which isn’t widely known: logic will wrap Intel plugins on the fly on Apple Sillicon of course, however it wraps each plugin on its own. This ends up with lots and lots of overhead for lots of plugins. It chokes. If you have older plugins, Get Info on Logic and run all of Logic as an Intel app. Sounds crazy, but then all the plugins aren’t wrapped and you can run way way way more of them.

Since the the cost of repair job not justified the performance, I simply put the Mac Pro for sale as 2nd handed with price tag as "not-working unit". Anyway, the Mac Mini M1 (8GB/256GB) runs good, except some program is refused to work (i.e. Acrobat Illustrator 2019) and some run deadly slow (i.e. Acrobat Photoshop 2019). It is later I realized M1 is a ARM-based architect chip which is very different to Intel X86 based chips, even their way of reinstalled of MacOS are totally different. Love this video so much as a purchased a Mac Pro this year knowing fully about M1 performance but somehow I didn’t want to move from Intel just yet. So glad I didn’t as mine as rock solid. 7,1 12C 96GB 4TB 2TB AIC w5700x. Running Monterey using Logic Pro latest, Reason 12 and ableton 11 sometimes. All my VSTs from NI, isotope and Plug-in alliance no drama. Waves plug-ins i through them in a virtual bin. Oh also Aruria working flawless. Not to mention boot camp which is a must at this point for me. I’m sure apple silicone Mac Pro can’t be expandable as much as our models with their architecture difference. Currently using 6 of 8 lanes so yeah. Trash can all over again I believe. Keep your vids coming.

      The biggest surprise was Logic taking a huge nosedive on our big templates - those only have Kontakt internally - which should have been fine - but Logic itself was screwing up and crashing - oh well. we'll revisit again next year at some point.

    Hey Neil, it’s perfectly understandable. Too bad, the Mac Studio is a nice pierce of hardware. I’m working with a MBP 16” Max 64GB 8TB right now, and I’m considering in a long term to add 1 (or even 2) Mac Studio as VEP servers. I’m new into composing stuff and I’m only doing it as a hobby, so definitely not the same obligations than you. Having said that, it would be great if you could do more video, like a tour of your studio, your analog stuff, video about your Dolby Atmos setup, or your composer template and stuff like that… plenty of ideas of videos that don’t have to always be about Apple Mac :)

    When I think of what Apple has done, I am pretty amazed it works at all for anyone. And the move from Intel explains a lot of the seemingly odd decisions Apple made over the years leading up to the shift.
    And though I am quite certain it was the right move for Apple, I will sit back until at least the next generation, and that is not because it's a production machine, that has to be running at all times, but rather since
    1) I want another year out of my present computer.
    2) I do not want trouble.
    Humbly, Ylan

    Yeah music prod is always stuck in periods. As a hobbyist musician, I never open old projects because I don’t care to even archive the project files as for me, when the song is exported, it’s done and if I need the same synth in new project, just load it up as a new instrument and load the preset on it.

    • @NeilParfittMusic
      @NeilParfittMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yeah it's funny - the Production period I loved best was Windows XP - literally nothing changed for a decade and anything made in that period worked on a machine. Apple had it from snow leopard until around Mavericks.. and then they got on the 'consumers need a new OS every 5 minutes' train... which broke everything too frequently

    ugh this rekindles so much of my rage against Apple as both a systems analyst and a creator........ The loss of older Logic sessions and the herculean endeavour to not lose them (dual boot) is a crime against humanity. I wont even get into the absolutely brutal disruptions of workflow as apple destroys Safari in Monterey.

    Can't say I'm very surprised. It always takes the production software a long time to catch up to any major changes in macOS, and especially CPU architecture changes. Good to hear first-hand experience though, and keep it coming please. We know it's not working now, and not likely to in the near future, but it will eventually.

    Don't know how prevalent but at a very simple level too my Mac Studio 2 TB has been a terrible experience. Within the first week, upon waking it from sleep I would get message every second or third day that "your computer restarted because of a problem" (Bus error ... kernel panic reports) and separately five times over past six weeks, on waking it up it did not recognize internet while being connected through ethernet cable and did so only upon restarting. Not once did I connect any of my advanced audio / musical instruments in this time. Only things connected were A. Apogee Duet 2 interface (via usb a) for about two weeks but since talking to Apple Support it has been disconnected, B. Logitech webcam C925E (via usb a) purchased new two months back (Support had me disconnect that too) and AOC display (via hdmi) 27B1H. Currently in a frustrating and tedious process of troubleshooting with Apple support (three calls but no avail). I am not tech savy and want to return it but Support says since return period is 15 days, it can't be done. I had 11 years of good experience with Imac 27, never encountered such abnormalities, and erroneously thought these Mac Studio issues would go away with updates. My Big Mistake. Have very little confidence in Apple now particularly that it has refused to accept it back. Had gotten it to advance my music composition and recording hobby. I have not even gone into Logic yet that I also purchased with it. Shudder to think if I connect any of my other equipment. In case you are wondering, transported to Mac Studio simple things - Word and photos smart phone videos only. No Garageband files. Did not have Logic before. Anyhow - depressing and for a lower middle class person - waste of hard earned money.

      @@NeilParfittMusic Thanks for your response, it is very good to know and I will continue to be at it. To give you some info on what's happened so far with Apple Support in 4 calls. May 3 Support had me check disk utilities and found nothing negative. Asked me to observe. Aforementioned two issues remained. May 13 We reinstalled Mac Monterey. Also disconnected Duet 2 and Logitech webcam and they remain disconnected. The two issues remained. May 16 We removed non used old programs imported from my previous Imac (Garmin gps & Android photo transfer). Also had Mac Studio put in Safe Mode and I was to observe any untoward things. Aforementioned two issues happened in Safe Mode too on 18 May. 18 May Support has me set up Test user and I am to note if the issues recur. They have not happened yet. Tomorrow I have a scheduled call with Support on next steps. Since am not tech adept, what are your thoughts - is trouble shooting going rightly - what should I orient towards next? Your view will be much appreciated, others who know about such issues please chime in too. Thanks a lot!

    I feel like it would have been very possible to see this coming. Working in a professional shared environment with different machines where stability is crucial, adding a machine that's on a completely new chip architecture is bound to be more of a unique compatibility hurdle compared to normal updates and upgrades. Adding a maxed out M1 Max and expecting a seamless interface with a stable running system just seems like expecting too much considering the processing evolution that's currently underway.

    On M1 Macs you always should use the newest System. But also wait a couple of months past the first official version as always. And also wait until most hardware and software manufacturers got their stuff native. Apple’s Bug Sir system was for early adopters only and Logic is buggy since years and there is hope that the newest version may be the most stable. Buy a cheap M1 test System to test the driver stability, plug-ins and other relevant software first

    • @NeilParfittMusic
      @NeilParfittMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't easily downgrade a machine earlier than what it shipped with - in our Mac Studio's case - it was Monterey. I was able to test (up to a point) with my MacBook Air M1 but as it only has 16GB of ram, it was easy to kill due to sheet lack of memory vs. even the bare minimum test sessions we need to be able to open. For now, it's just another waiting game.. probably for awhile..
