I really doubt that President Obama truly cares about the health of the people of this country. After all, he had 8 years and did nothing (except, of course, for Obamacare - which ha,s nothing to do with health or nutrition).. For that matter, I don't think ANY of our former presidents really cared about the health of We, The People. President Trump appears to have had his eyes opened by RFK, Jr. Hopefully, we will get a chance to see if this is really the case. Putting RFK, Jr. in charge of improving the health of the people of this country is really the only way I see any change happening in my lifetime. (Like RFK, JR., I am 70 years old).
You are also a very courageous man, Dr. Dhand. Peace.

However, I'm lucky in that unlike many, I can afford to do so, because it's six times the price of the plastic stuff. Real sourdough doesn't keep, but you can slice it and freeze it. Thier doctor was from India and she told our family that she sees on average a case of IBS/Crohns etc EVERY DAY in the USA - diseases that she saw maybe once every few months in India. For at least 10 years I had to use an inhaler because I had exercised induced asthma. Couldn't catch a full breath without it, and after the run would cough and gag something awful. Several years ago I decided to clean up my diet. Stopped eating bread & other crap like cookies, cakes, pasta, rice, etc etc. Yes, I do treat myself, but all that stuff is no longer a regular part of diet. Since cleaning up diet, I no longer have to use an inhaler & my exercise induced asthma is gone. The funny thing is I did not clean up thinking it would get rid of asthma, just did it to better take care of myself. No more inhaler!

I think the problem is two-fold. Firstly, highly processed foods are generally cheaper than fresh and/or organic.. Secondly, many people are raised on such foods, so they honestly don't know any better. I grew up in post war England in the '40s when our food was rationed. My mother used to say they rationed rubbish. It was the basics, I believe, if my memory serves me well, but I was lucky we lived on an abundant farm and ate directly from trees, bushes and the earth. (Haha that sounds primitive, but you know what I mean - just fresh foods.) I became a vegetarian there, too, having seen the farmer kill the animals with his bare hands. Not a pretty sight. I am now 85 and perfectly healthy, unlike many of my acquaintances are suffering lots of different illnesses. Thank you, Dr Dhand for your friendly and commonsense videos.

I then changed my diet, to very low carb, eating healthy real foods, lost weight, over 15 kgs, walk up to 5 kms per day and in remission now for over 8 months.
My Doctor said to me whatever it is you are doing, keep at it, because it's working.
How can a Dieteican comment on ultraprocessed foods and claim they are not as bad as we think.
    How tragic!

When you fast, the body burns off harmful linoleic acid quickly and this allows the body to burn more stearic acid, and doing so actually increases all important mitochondrial health. Linoleic acid has the opposite effect and destroys the mitochondria. The many benefits of occasional extended fasting and lowering dietary carbs:
Your body recycles up to 1/3 of all immune cells in a 72h fast, rejuvenating your immune system. This helps with autoimmune disease, cancers and cytokine storm.
Reduces B cells by over half in a single fast, greatly reducing allergic and other autoimmune responses.
Fasting and low carb help with POTS, which is driven by high insulin and blood sugar.
Clotting and fibrin are inhibited, stopping any 'unusual' clots.
The hunger hormone ghrelin also lowers with extended fasting and rises from dieting.
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of proteins, pathogens and plaques by macrophages and other immune bodies. This will remove spikes quicker, whether natural or unnatural in origin!
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered when fasting, reducing inflammation and allowing the immune bodies to move freely through the body.
T cells are cruciall in fighting cancer, autoimmune disease and infection. Tthymus generally stops making them with age but fasting releases stem cells, which then can become new T cells. It also releases growth hormone, which regenerates the thymus!
When insulin is high, vit D stays locked in the blood cells but fasting quickly lowers it. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased as fasting improves metabolic health, and D in turn increases autophagy.
Your brain prefers to burn ketones at a rate of around 2.5 to 1 when equally available to glucose. Except for brief periods of very intense exercise, your body mainly burns free fatty acids.
Fasting increases anti-aging Yamanaka factors and increases average telomere length in stem cell pools.
Reflexes and short term memory are increased.
Clots and plaques are removed over time due to accelerated phagocytosis.
Fasting reduces cortisol over time and improves your circadian rhythm.
Fasts from 36-96 h increase metabolic rate due to norepinephrine release!.
Fasting increases interferon, which shuts down the ability of viruses to replicate.
Fasting does not reduce testosterone over time. It raises it when the fast is broken by increasing lutenizing hormone. It also increases insulin sensitivity, which helps with muscle building. And removes fat, which also increases estrogen in men.
Fasting activates autophagy (literally self eating). This recycles damaged proteins and foreign matter such as viruses.
Weight loss from daily caloric restriction has 1/4 to 1/3 of the weight lost as lean tissue while many studies show fat loss from 36 h fasts without losing any lean tissue!
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mtDNA. Mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism, fighting infection and cancer prevention!
24h of fasting reduces leptin levels by half! This reduces leptin resistance, which impairs immune function.
Fasting restores NAD+, reduces NADH and increases nitric oxide release to open blood vessels.
Over time fasting normalizes stomach acid levels and during the fast acid levels go down to allow for the healing of ulcers.
Fasting reduces pain and anxiety by stimulating the endocannabinoid system, just like the effect of CBD oil
The obese will lose loose skin while fasting, but the frail will have increased growth hormone release, which helps to make more lean tissue and reduce frailness.
When not in ketosis, the brain can only burn glucose, which produces a great deal of damaging ROS the brain has to deal with.
Fasts of 36-96 will not affect short term female fertility or affect menstrual cycle. They also may increase long term fertility for some women.
Fasting increases telomere length, negating some effects of aging at a cellular level.
Fasting releases BDNF and NGF in the blood, creating new nerve and brain cell growth. This helps a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
Fasting stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells, destroying them. Senescent cells are responsible for many of the effects of aging and are a root cause of the development of cancer.
Glycine and trimethylglycine (TMG) can also be useful supplements while fasting that won't break ketosis and have many benefits.
A fasting mimicking diet for 3-5 days in a row provides many of the same benefits as water fasting. FMD has about 200-800 calories, under 18 g of protein and zero net carbs.
What breaks a fast? Anything with protein or carbohydrates in it will break a fast but most teas and herbs are OK. Supplements and meds usually break ketosis due to fillers or directly. Some of them also irritate the stomach. Many meds are dangerous to take while fasting.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. They also help with dementia and many other issues even if you take them while not fasting!
Children, expecting or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors that excrete insulin or certain rare forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all or only with doctor supervision. T1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis and done under doctor supervision. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness or tremors, then simply break the fast with a low carb meal.

Even decades ago I felt that Time was a weak magazine which did not inform its readers much.

Mondelez talked to Time and offered a bunch of cookie advertising if they...ran this little puff piece. RJ Reynolds Tobacco bought Nabisco back in the early 1980s as they were able to use the massive advertising budget to pressure media companies to eliminate negative health news about tobacco.

Here, in the Netherlands, dieticians are not free to advice their clients real healthy food. The official guidelines are more and more determined by politics, not by health. We are supposed to eat lots of carbohydrates, believe that seed oils are healthy and meat is unhealthy. Give your child margarine, not real butter. The processed food problem is mostly ignored. Thank you for speaking the truth.

There are a lot of seed oils in the supermarket foods, in both the refrigerator case and the glass jars. Lots of sunflower oil in particular, and much less olive oil.

Same in Poland. No meat, no fat, no butter, lots and lots of bread. Four aisles of sweets in the supermarket, and one for oils and sauces.

Yes, Europe has a lot of catching up to do on truthful nutrition. Here in the US we are busy dissecting all the fraud the media puts out. But more importantly, People with capital are creating ideas and products (like fake meat) every day and competitively . I still love "Holland cake" ; made with rye and honey only, when I was wheat-intolerant in childhood --whew- 70 years ago. If there weren't so many cranks and crooks in the biz, the useful ideas would be better propagated. "Reform House" (Amsterdam)is a weird name for a health food store !--sort of like how the smaller natfoods were in the 70s- still, glad to commit myself there! Up till the 70s, we had the choice of eating bad greasy food and starch, which still dominates and fills up the cancer wards.

Dr. Dhani, Don't hold your breathe waiting for Barack Obama to help the health & well being of the country. He still smokes over a pack of cigarettes a day. Also, there is no money in it for him to do that.
