    *I like the old style Echo Dot because it's small also **Newest.Technology**, gives out decent sound and doesn't take up a lot of shelf space if you want to put it on beam in the workshop or shed.*

    Good video - explained very well. My observation was when Isolating the mains power to fit the controller (by switching off fused spur )- I would suggest, not only switching off the Switched Fused Spur but also remove the actual Fuse from the Switched Fused Spur unit. Or if isolating at Consumer Unit - locking out the RCD / MCB/ RCBO to avoid it being switched on whilst you are wiring the controller.
    Also don't you need to alter the wiring in the wiring centre box where the hardwired roomstat has been removed. I may have missed this in the video, but if you don't do this the heating will not work.

    This is a great guide. Never tackled heating before but want to install hive. After watching your guide I'm confident 1. That it is compatible with my current install and 2. that I'll be able to install it myself.

    Compliments on an informative video. I bought a Hive last night in a Black Friday sale event, including free Amazon Echo (got two already but more won't hurt) and including installation for £148. The install is £40 of that price but looking at this, I fitted our existing Danfoss, the same as yours so could have gone for the self fit. Regardless, price was good so no issue. Just one comment, when showing the wiring or diagrams, please consider using a tripod or just a still picture of them and voice over afterwards. I paused the video to keep a still frame to look at as you were wobbling around a bit :)

    Very useful and informative . Nice to see the full installation as others were just giving the impression that all one needed to do was install a thermostat.
    I would have liked to have seen better detail on the thermostat controls in particular manual "Heating ON" as I'm thinking of installing one for my father who is severely technically challenged.

      Hi, thanks for watching! On the heating controls, there is a little more info on my follow up video: th-cam.com/video/t0h__djKg3Q/w-d-xo.html
      But to answer your question, a quick "HEAT ON" boost would be to press one of the two top recessed boost buttons which would turn the heating on for an hour at your triggered boost temperature, that may do what you want. Depending on your fathers mobility though the top button may not be ideal.

    Great instructions superb. A thing to note with the Hive on Amazon is they offer installation through British Gas quite cheaply at the moment (£30 ish) unfortunately they won't touch an oil boiler. So if you order installation they only send thermostat no hub or receiver the engineer brings those. Odd really because the engineer doesn't even need to touch boiler. I had to send mine back and order a none installation one.

But you should advise also the people, that wiring needs to be done by a competent person, who can test it after installation, and have the knowledge, if something goes wrong. And finally, you can get a Certificate for the Electrical installation (If the boiler still have a warranty, or for Insurance )

    • @junkendriven
      @junkendriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. So you only need the hub if you want to control it online. The hub joins the home equipment to the internet via a network cable into your broadband router. If you don't want to use the app on the phone or their website to configure and control then you do NOT need the hub. The thermostat and boiler control unit do NOT need the hub. Hope that clears it up :-) Please remember to subscribe to help the channel out.

    Why are the hot water off & heating off terminals not connected on the Hive system, surely you need these to control the motorised valves, unless they are spring return but as the old programmer had these connections used I would have thought it necessary to use with the Hive.

    • @junkendriven
      @junkendriven  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a lot of systems as you rightly say the motorised vales are spring return/idle return. So in my case the terminals are there just unused so my two OFF connections dont have any wires attached. (So although the old programmer had the connections, there were no wires into them in the backplate)

    • @junkendriven
      @junkendriven  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, typically you can just disconnect the wires from both ends as they're not used. Do it safely and tape/cover the wires before hiding back in your wall

  • @charnjeetsingh5515
    @charnjeetsingh5515 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for sharing all information one question for you what about the old thermostat how can replace we can leave like that how can disconnect it because I have a tank boiler please make another video thank you

    • @junkendriven
      @junkendriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, it depends on how your old room thermostat is connected. In the video mine is connected to the plate so by replacing it my thermostat is disconnected, you can then just remove it from the wall and use tape to protect the wires in the wall.
      The room thermostat doesn't affect the tank for hot water

    Andy can you explain the wiring before you put the new receiver base on. What I mean is with your neutrals and lives, are they joined together on the base for example your cable in from the DB and your flex out to the boiler. So twin and earth in and a 5 core flex to the boiler??

  • @davelifely5715

    This is a really helpful video. I'm looking at doing a similar replacement myself, but my existing wiring doesn't seem to have a wire to the Central Heating off connection. Can that one be ignored? My system has a separate controller and receiver, though I am thinking the receiver is what you refer to as the remote control part, which you ignore, as I think the hive thermostat communicates directly with the dual receiver?

    Great video. Very useful and just been looking at this before ordering Hive. Have had Hive before but had it installed. I've got only 2 wires for HW ON and CH ON in my existing programmer like some of the other viewers. What you say seems straightforward but in my case, I also have an existing wireless thermostat and the wires going into the 'base' part of that (which is right next to the programmer) are the same colour as the HW ON and CH ON wires in the programmer. Do I need to do any thing different? The wireless thermostat will obviously be redundant when Hive takes over.

    • @junkendriven
      @junkendriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally (have to check manuals, etc) you can set that to bypass and use an external timer and programmer. Normally wiring is there to do it and you just set a jumper or wire to use external timer.
      Remember, wiring in boilers is at mains voltage, don't mess with the power on or if unsure get assistance

    Can I ask a question Andy, if you know or maybe someone else might. I had a Hive in my old house, when I moved to my new house, I took the hub, as I was told it was linked to my account. I’d like to have a hive in the new house. It has the boiler room on the 3rd floor, with a control panel for the hot water. The ground floor and second floor have their own thermostats. What I’d like to know if you can answer, if I buy the Hive with a receiver and two thermostats, will my current Hub connect to the new receiver and thermostats, or will I have to buy the whole lot with a new hub?
    Cheers

    • @junkendriven
      @junkendriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul, on the first point about taking the hub, absolutely. I know the hub ID is linked to your account (which is why pairing is done by calling/speaking to them) so taking that with you makes sense. So you then just re-pair the thermostats and receiver to your hub. I've not seen personally the two thermostat solution, I believe you may need two receivers, one for ground floor and one for 1st floor to 'switch' the right contacts in the boiler, but I'm not 100% sure on that. Sorry can't give a more concise answer on that one. Please do post back on your results

    will this not work if you have combi boiler my boiler is a combi boiler

      @junkendriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a combi you'd order the heat only version of hive so it would only switch heating

    So nothing had to be done with the old wall mounted thermostats ? just disconnect them from the wire box

      Hi, no. The hub is only needed if you want to use the web or mobile app for programming or control.
      Thanks for watching :-)

      Hi Trevor, mine isn't combi, you buy the hive unit for either combi or not (mine is a semi traditional tank fed hot water so I have the dual zone hive)

    How come you don’t need the remote receive on the hive but it’s wired in with the old system ?

    • @junkendriven
      @junkendriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul. The remote receive, do you mean the old thermostat/temperature switch? On mine it was a sensor so just removing it solved it for me. It's the two spare wires when I fit to the wall/backing plate.

    One more quest andy
    The wires that run from the termostat
    To the control unit
    Do they need to be disconnected

    • @junkendriven
      @junkendriven  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Generally, yes. When you change the control unit for the hive those wires are spare anyway so either disconnect them (in mine I disconnected and electrician tape the contacts so they couldn't make contact with anything)

    Anyone advise me i cant pair my phone to the thermostat using the app. My phone cant find the thermostat. Any help please?

    • @junkendriven
      @junkendriven  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I'm assuming you purchased the Hive hub too? You cannot pair a phone directly to the Hive thermostat on it's own, you need the hub. You then register the hub (using the code underneath) at the Hive website and from there you can login using your phone hive app.
      Hope that helps.

      @@junkendriven I have the hub yes. On the app where it says manage devices it has the hub there saying its connected. But I try to find the thermostat and it never finds anything at all gggrrrrrrrrr!!

    Hi,
    Did you try the Hive Active Heating "ready by" function?
    I guess this is one of the most beneficial aspects of Hive and I haven't seen it in any video..yet!

    • @junkendriven
      @junkendriven  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching, I'm doing a follow up video very shortly on the Hive, 1 year on with ups and downs.
      Good suggestion on the "Ready By" function, I've not fully tested but will do this and add to the next video

    If the hub connected to the internet goes down (no internet) does the thermostat / receiver still send on/off to the boiler? Which is what my current thermostat does. Would you just loose the smartphone capability?

    • @junkendriven
      @junkendriven  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, yes heating systems still work fine without internet, you lose the ability to control/configure remotely via phone and the website. They actually sell the product without the hub so it acts as a stand alone system too.

    • @nalem7
      @nalem7 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leslie Thomas we’ve been using “hive 1” for two years. Receiver and boiler is at the back of the loft, about 12m from hub and roomstat. Works perfectly. Just upgrading to “hive 2”. Shoul be even better 🤔
