00:00 Bomber & Flight Jacket Introduction
Like many classic men’s garments, bomber and flight jackets were originally created as highly functional workwear for members of the military.
00:54 Difference Between Bomber & Flight Jackets
Bomber jackets are often called flight jackets, and in fact, the terms can be used interchangeably to refer to one garment. They have a long history, come in a wide number of variations, and are great for casual attire.
Technically speaking, the flight jacket refers to any style of jacket with aviation roots. While bomber jackets are a nickname that’s stuck through the years, as they describe the military-issued outerwear worn by bomber plane pilots.
    02:02 Bomber Jacket History
In the early days of flight after the turn of the century, the open cockpits of planes made flying a cold, windy task. Men wore very long, heavy overcoats that acted like big blankets to add a layer of warmth but, these coats were far too long for flying.
In World War I, the performance materials of the day were all natural products, so flight jackets were constructed of sheepskin, fur, and tough leather.
07:37 Iconic Bomber Jackets in Film
    → Indiana Jones’ Bomber Jacket
→ The Top Gun Bomber Jacket
    → Bomber Jackets in Batman
    → Drive - Ryan Gosling’s Bomber Jacket
09:38 How Should a Bomber Jacket Fit?
Even though most bombers feature elastic at the cuffs and hem, this shouldn’t be stretched tight when you pull on and fasten the jacket fully. The elastic should hug your wrists and waist, but you should still be able to move underneath. In order to get the correct body length, you’ll want your bomber jacket to reach your hips.
    11:04 Bomber Jacket Styling Tips
You’ll want to choose a plain, unadorned bomber for the most classic look. The easiest way to incorporate and wear a bomber jacket into your wardrobe is by remembering that casual clothing is king; so a t-shirt will always work as a base layer. Add some good-quality denim jeans and a pair of sturdy boots, and you’ll be set.
You can increase the formality of a bomber jacket, by using casual button-up shirts such as flannel shirts, or perhaps OCBD shirts. Smarter trouser options include classic menswear staples such as khakis, chinos, and corduroys.
When it comes to footwear, you can’t go wrong with leather or even canvas shoes that reflect the functional-cool aesthetic of the jacket. So work boots or brogues are great options, as well as simple canvas or leather sneakers.
    13:17 Buying a Bomber Jacket
You can buy a genuine vintage bomber jacket, but they either fetch many thousands of dollars or have significant issues that need to be addressed. If you’re happy to put in the work, eBay and specialized collectors are typically the best sources for authentic and vintage models.
Eastman Leather, Cockpit USA, and US Wings offer a range of various leather models, with US Wings also offering nylon flight jackets.

I wore my USWings G1 on a grocery run this evening. The USW G1 isn't a reproduction; they have been a supplier for the Navy, so you'll be wearing an "issue" jacket. It's a good mid-range jacket, a good value for the money. Sizes range from small to 3X. The G1s are cut "trim", so order a size larger than you'd wear in other coats.

I've worn a black leather bomber jacket for about 35 years now (same one, it's lasted great). I love it as it's warm and functional. Yet, it looks great with jeans and flannel shirts on up to office wear. Mine has a removable fur-like lining and a removable fur collar (which I always have removed).

Good video as usual. I do differ in my opinion about non-leather jackets being bomber style. Though when I was in the navy aviators wore a nylon insulated jacket, I still hold that bomber jackets are leather. Aviator jackets are different. (They're not leather, for one.)
The cloth versions you are calling bomber jackets, I consider to be grown from the varsity and coaching jackets family, versus bomber.
I have a brown leather bomber I bought in Korea in 1988. It has cuts and scars the steer earned through its life visible to the viewer. I wear it mostly in spring and fall, and mostly over casual outfits, though I have used it to dress down a shirt and tie combo.

U.S. Wings has a vest version of the G-1 you might find more wearable during the summer.
At first glance one might not recognize it as the same style of jacket as Maverick's from Top Gun, but a closer look shows all of the G-1's classic DNA: from the iconic detachable fur collar to the distinctive buttons on it's pockets, the waistband, the wind flap with USN perforated on it, the big brass zipper with leather pull, and the action back - it's all there except the sleeves and the patches.
I really like how you can get a ton of different looks with it depending on what you wear underneath. It's just a really fun piece to experiment with.

I admit I would find non-military people wearing military badges or even rank insignia on such an item most confusing, but I think a m1a1 without such is perfectly acceptable. I don't know about the military you served in, but the one I served in defined uniforms as only valid uniforms when having insignia on them.

Just for insignia. The rest is irrelevant
