Darrel this is a very helpful method. I normally use the grid method. I will try this method . Thank you very much.

I have used the grid for many many years. I like this method and I understand it, but I have yet to try it. I dont know if its fear or old fashion. I also dont trust the proportional divider I have. It seems like it does not stay in position when I move it. It is a cheap one so maybe i need a better quality divider.
But anyway, thank you Darrell for your commitment to help us improve. You are an amazing artist. I wish to achieve a level close to yours in my portraits. Only a thousand more pencils to go.

I would love to a video that explains and demonstrates your method without the comparisons to the grid method. I attempt your method because I believe it is a wonderful method

Jeanelle, there is a series posted on our channel called Drawing Accurately that goes into detail on this method, here's the link to part 1

What if you are drawing from a mobile phone.. How can your method be used

If you understand the method, you will not necessarily need to see the detail on your phone, but instead, what you hear will be a reminder. There are also videos that can be watched for visual instruction and demonstration.

I have been drawing for 60 years and much advice online is useless. Grids work but they are too much trouble. Transfer your image to a computer and use the screen as a lightbox. Adjust size and trace directly from the screen, tape the tracing paper to the computer if needed. This method is mentioned online several times, including Lachrie Fine Art website.

I've always used grids. I will try this method, however, for the test. The problem can occur with the hair. E.g. long hair of a woman. I would like to copy every fragment carefully.
The grate will work here well. How many dots should be set to
imitate such hair. Plenty of time it will take.
A similar problem would be with, for example, the landscape. Another example is clothing like a movie. All these folds under the chin of this lady. Mark each fold?

When I start a new layout on camera, I usually encourage you to try the Straightedge and Divider Method, for a number of reasons. However, I let you know that, if you are having trouble with understanding the procedure, you can always fall back on your Grid Method if that is within your comfort zone.
I show you how to establish the two main Bearing Lines from the reference to the Drawing Paper. Where the Bearing lines intersect, this will be the Main Bearing Point. From that point you will determine your Size Ratio This will give you the ability to anchor your Reference Points on one of those Bearing Lines. Usually the one that goes from Side to Side. When you have decided your Size Ratio, you will measure down on the Bearing Line that goes from top to bottom and place a mark the will become your Pivot Point. From that Pivot Point, you will reach out to each place that an important detail intersects the Bearing Line that goes from side to side. When you have those marked, you will pick either the one established farthest to the Right, or the farthest to the Left and use that as an additional Pivot Point to find the places that Intersect the Bearing Line that goes the Top to the Bottom. When that Bearing line has your details marked that intersect that Bearing Line, you can then pick out the Bearing Point that is farthest from the Main Bearing Point on the line and make a second Pivot Point. You can then reach out to anything that you would want to find. Even it is a Dot that you have specifically placed on the Hair of your subject where you need to find a particular point that you have placed on your reference, other than on your Bearing Lines. The difference is, you must make a longer Straight Line that runs through where you want the point of detail, so that you can then pull from your other Bearing Point, so that you can intersect that line from another direction. The point where it crosses that line will be you reference Point. You can make as many reference points for the hair as you like. The Divider is also excellent to use as well, once you have enough of your reference points established, so that you can use it as a comparative measuring tool. I hope that this helps… It is easier to show you in a demonstration. “How To Draw Accurately Every Time” Is a good Demo Video (th-cam.com/video/jexwG4bnTN0/w-d-xo.html), even though I demonstrate the layout in most of the 5PM Class Projects…, Darrel :) :) :)

@@5PencilMethod Thank you for the comprehensive answer.
I understand the method. I looked at all available materials. The point is that I gave examples where this method will take a lot of time. This method is profitable when we have, for example, a person without hair, without clothing. The more details, the worse. It's about time / effort. Sometimes you need to set up hundreds of points on your hair or clothing. For me, it is important to reproduce not only the face but also the rest. When I have a lot of details, I make a dense mesh. But as I wrote I will try, I will compare the methods temporarily.

I tried the grid method only once and is not for me. With lots of practice , with time the drawings start to become more and more accurate and i tnink that is an important path.
