youre like the cool art uncle i never had,,, such amazing videos! i normally cant focus on watching tutorials and i end up skipping to the end, but with yours im able to watch the entire vid!
Thanks so much! Glad you commented! Comments like yours help motivate me to continue on and produce more (wish I could do it full-time, but alas, not at that point yet) 😊
I have one in the works. Fitting it into a schedule that suddenly got super-busy is the challenge. So, not sure when I'll get it finished and posted. Knowing that people like you enjoy the way I explain helps keep me motivated, though. Thanks for your comment! 😊
Wow! It's truly been years since anyone has actually given me some new technique for my art that I haven't seen before. I was skeptical there was anything here new to me. But I got TWO really helpful techniques out of this. I'm so excited to put them to use!
@@dianagibson4923 Vine charcoal is Wonderful stuff! I've used it for lots of things. Another way to transfer would be to use the vine charcoal on the back of the sketch, and then use the sketch like a carbon paper. Easy, but can be a bit messy.
@@artistchronicle I just found your channel and love it!!! I hope you come back with some new videos when you can! Thanks for all the informative and fun content! ❤️
In addition to the bonus tip, what also works is drawing lines diagonally from corner to corner to find the center. Then draw a horizontal and vertical line through the center (erase the diagonals also). After that you can divide these resulting rectangles in half to your heart's content until you have the grid you want.
This also works for parting of foods, an example is if you are baking bread and need yeast or butter but the bought cube is twice the weight needed, simply cut corner to opposite corner instead of guesstimating where the middle is. Need a quarter if the original amount? Make a cut from longest side of the recently created triangle, from the longest side in a 90 degree angle to the corner with the widest arc (the shortest line from the top of the pyramid to the base). And so on.
I thought this same thing when I first started watching, but the thing is, the squares will be different sizes in the end. This method he showed works good if you have a specific amount of grid lines you want(something that isn't divided evenly by 2 or 4, etc.) or if you have a certain size grid you want to do.
@@gozinta82 Thanks for your comment! So... I attended a traditional art school and the grid method I show in this video is the method I learned there. I have since seen the diagonal method and my first impression was that it was different, but pretty impressive. It's an especially good choice when doing a mural. But I go with what I know. Which is the square or rectangle grid method. Also, to me, something about it just feels right and is more esthetically pleasing. But, both methods have value. Probably just a personal choice in the end.
This was a wonderful lessons. I have taught for years and this grid method seems to be confusing for so many…..breaking it down like this was incredibly simple. I am forwarding this video to all of my students.
I'm very surprised. I've never taken a single art class and I've been doing a version of this graph method as it occurred to me when i tried to recreate a Leonid Afremov painting. But i have never heard of soft vine charcoal, i was using pencil. Now I've got to find this particular charcoal. Thank you very much, the pencil has been a thorn in my side when trying to remove or cover it especially when on an area that requires a light color. Lovely video.
Thank you oh gods of the algorithm! Stumbled onto this video, and I could not be more delighted! Great host, great info, great presentation; subscribed!
This grid method is brilliant! I am thrilled to see this method. I have a piece of vine charcoal that never works and I’m concluding it must be too hard I’m going to throw it away and get some soft vine charcoal.
Thank you for a truly helpful set of tools. Most ‘hacks’ are not useful, I do not oil paint, I do random crafts and this knowledge will serve me well. Oh and I shared this with my daughter who does oil paint. 😉💜
