Paul should write a children’s book about guide dogs starring Mr. Maple! I’m glad he’s a natural swimmer and is so good at his recall, which is way better than my boys can do 🐾💕
Said it before and will say it again- I have never seen a dog as kind, social, smart, sassy, and above all empathetic as Mr. Maple. If he hadn’t become a guide dog, he could easily have had a career as a service dog for someone with PTSD or something.
He's so confused lmao. That's just a testament to his training. I think his initial discomfort was more so from the harness and being away from Paul. When wearing them, guide dogs go into "work mode". And that's ingrained in them after years of training. To Maple, having any kind of harness or leash on to him means - it's time to protect Paul and guide him safely. And now all of a sudden Maple finds himself in the water not easily able to get to the human he's trained to protect . The entire time he was looking in Paul's direction, and like he was trying to get to him. A blind friend of mine has a guide dog and a few years ago we went to swim in the local creek. His guide dog went absolutely crazy and hysterical, with inconsolable panic when she saw him go into the water. She knows all of us and trusts us with him, but she wouldn't let any of us near him until she guided him back to shore. And it's so interesting because during this instance Cleo (my buddy's guide dog) had her leash and doggie life jacket on. We went back a few weeks later to the creek and let her out of her work "uniform" off leash - she barely even looked up when he got in the water. It's so amazing how well trained they are. And can recognize when work is happening, versus leisure. The trainers do such an amazing job. They have to be confident in a dog's ability to be loyal beyond words to protect a human who cannot see. But also, despite domestic breeding for obedience, disobey their blind owner if the guide dog knows the environment is unsafe. And then conversely recognize this guide dog will also be this person's at home pet when not guiding them. So they also have to train into these dogs, the ability to, once unleashed and un harnessed to be humans best friend once again. Until tomorrow, they have to get into work mode, and guide their human safely through life.
I had a similar thought about him being in the harness while in the water. He always kept trying to make a beeline to Paul while the harness was on. That's excellent training - but also excellent *adherence* to the training provided to guide dogs. He was much more relaxed off leash and off harness because he wasn't in work mode. I didn't expect he would have swimming issues. Most dogs (not all as Paul pointed out) have natural tendencies and know how to swim. Some don't, but it's sort of the opposite of humans: Most humans don't have natural tendencies for swimming, but some do.
That's so interesting! I suppose it's because, in the dog's mind, if they're 'on duty' and a blind person is in the water, it's an accident and the person needs rescue. But if they're in the water when the dog is off duty, it's just humans being weird
I love the fact that you teach us about guide dogs and what you need to do to keep them safe and happy. Mr. Maple is certainly a happy boy. I love you guys together!
Maple is clearly the type of dog who goes "alright, I can do this in an emergency. Now get me out", lol. Our dog was the complete opposite. She jumped right into any source of water she could find. Rivers, lakes, the ocean... if there was water, she was in it. For hours. Except if the water was coming from above, of course. She wouldn't set one paw outside if it was raining. xD
What a DELIGHT!!!! I've always wanted to see Maple being "just a dog," romping around outside. He is too sweet for words. As to the swimming: I could only hear him yelling, "DADDIES! GET ME OUT OF HERE!!!!" But he did well, and you know he can swim if he has to. Thanks to all three of you! ❤❤
Paul you are absolutely correct that a dog park can mess up a service dog! So many people fake service animals in my state and it's almost cost my wife her service dog so many times cause she was attacked while working... Thankfully with training we got her confidence back every time but some dogs after one attack it's game over for their career.... I'm so glad you guys have a big park like that near you! And he's an absolute natural in the water thanks to the breed but you can tell he didn't much care for it lol
I really love this video of Maple's swimming lesson/hydrotherapy. It's good to know he can swim and survive. Good job, Maple! I'm proud of you. So are Paul and Matthew.
Personally I'm having a mild anxiety attack watching him swimming towards dad, and trying very hard not to look at his eyes, but i can't help it. I know it's a worthwhile skill and I'm working on my reaction. Maple is one amazing dog.
You teach dogs how to swim for the same reason you teach children, no matter if they enjoy it or not - even if they only need it once in forever, it'll save their life. Good job.
Used to work at a place with a dog pool. The dogs that were regulars screamed about of happiness when they entered, so cute! My own dogs absolutely love it to. My boy loves to jump in and fetch his toys. Often they don’t like it the first couple of times.
Mr Maple once again showing how us he is such a good boy! Paul needs to write a series of books called Mr Maples Adventures. They would be fabulous and the kids would love them as much as the Pengrooms!👏👏🦮❤❤❤
I had a black lab/black retriever mix.. she loved the ocean and the river and HATED the swimming pool. First she saw the ocean at 6months old it was a love relationship with the waves and the ocean. She LOVED only fetch in the water. Take Me Maple to the dog beach on N Alaskan Way and play fetch ❤❤
The reason dogs drown in pools is because they cannot find the exit. Always make sure that your dog knows where the exit is if they are around a pool. Also some dogs who do not like pools prefer natural water like lakes and oceans where they can naturally walk in instead of jumping or stepping in. Mr. Maple may enjoy lakes and oceans even if he didn't enjoy his swimming lesson.
Important to note for those who don’t know you never encourage a service dog to play fetch because you don’t want to encourage their prey drive instincts. This is a perfect substitute for a game of fetch! Great job guys❤
Aw, Maple did such a good job! I used to have a Doberman and she would have half her body out of the water THRASHING around as her form of swimming; definitely not as graceful as Maple.🤣
@@chiberjuberdourado2487 You know, I'm not sure!😂 She didn't love it, but she didn't hate it either. It depends on the breed, but our labrador was just over two months, walked into the farm dam and swam. She went for regular swims all on her own just because she loved water
This reminds me of when I taught my dog Cocoa how to swim. She had no confidence in the water and i was frequently swimming in a nearby canal to cool off. Cocoa would get her feet wet and she would sit in the water but she wouldn't jump in and swim about. She'd get it just enough to make it to me then she'd dig her front paws into my top and hold on. So it started holding her "hands" and gently pulling her through the water with me and when I did that she'd either relax enough for her hind end to bob up to the surface and float or she'd "stand" upright by planting her back feet on my legs. She really likes standing up too. She once went close enough to shore to stand up and still have the water at her chest and she just stood there in the water. Like a human kid yelling "Mom I'm ready to go".
Awww Mr. Maple was like "DADS PLEASE GET ME OUT OF THIS FREAKING LARGE PUDDLE!" Such a good boy!
Maple spent so much of the lesson trying to escape as calmly as possible, what a good boy!
Lol you could really see the urge to get out in every kick 😂
You should make this a series: Mr Maple Adventures!
They so should! I'd skip class to watch that!
