V8 S10 Chevy 350 Core Plug Installation (Ep.7 Part 1 of 7)

- Time to finish this engine rebuild! First up we will get all new core (freeze) plugs into the engine block, maybe not the most interesting task but a very important one for every engine rebuild!
Had a stumble when I realized that this engine used 29/64” plugs instead of the traditional 1/2” ones in oil galleys, which added a few days of waiting to this process. Have been working hard to make these videos happen, so look forward to the next six (!) parts of this episode!

I've got a S10 in my backyard that I did a V8 swap on years ago, unfortunately I was never able to finish it because of health problems. It's nice to be able to see one get finished, I hope you get years of enjoyment out of yours.
I've got Internal Combustion Engine Design book by John Manning on my nightstand and it never talks about oil galley (always gallery), so don't sweat about it. :-)

This episode is a huge one. Part 2 is rendering as I type this, but the other parts still need editing work. I was hoping to get all of the parts up this weekend, but at this point I wouldn't count on it. I figure something is better than nothing, right? The rest of the parts will go up as I finish them.

it hurt a little seeing the steel 29/64 plugs going in but use a good coolant mix you will be ok

I was hoping you'd remember that oil plug at 7:50. Like you said, its crucial. Had a couple of buddies forget it even after I reminded them. They got kinda mad I told them, they both said "we know what we're doing, we're not stupid" then they wondered what was wrong .....🙄🤔😒

My friend and I turned it into a drinking game, with shouting gallery on every shot. Needless to say we had to rewatch this video. Worth it though, this is one of the best series of videos I have ever watched on TH-cam.
Really like the detail your going into with these videos. I've always wanted to learn how to tear down and assemble and engine. I just actually came into possession of a ford 360 from a parts truck for my 1970 f250 these videos are really going to help when I get around to it.

I watched a guy rebuild a 454 that he was supercharging and putting in a Pontiac. He may one day get that done. He put blue locktite on the core plugs.

Oil gallery.
The galley is where you sit in a boat.
The galley on a boat and on an airplane is where the food is prepared. But you're understanding is correct that they are called galleries on an engine.

Why people don't spend the extra 4 or 5 dollars for the brass plugs, I'll never know. The first time you have to pull an engine to replace rotten galvanized (or zinc coated, whatever) crap, you'll pop for them from then on. I paid big money to a big name engine builder and they cheaped out on the freeze plugs. Unbelievable. It's a hell of an engine but one "aw shit" will cost you ten "atta boys".

On a serious not though. Might not be a bad idea to put some sealant on those plugs.
My block is from a 78 Vette, and it has the hidden oil galley plug. I tapped that hole and put a 20 cent grade 8 plug in from the hardware store.
My recent block I'm working on is from a 79 Vette. I tapped and thread plugged the same hole also, just because someone says I should. It was Fun !

You can thread the hidden plug just like the others. Makes it way easier.
With it being a smaller size on this block, I guess it would have to be drilled larger and then a pipe tap used. You don't usually see those done but some people will do it on certain blocks.
I would have done the cam bearings too...

Weld up that rear end and put some traction bars on it... other than that it will not be drivable in the rain. I had a buddy who put a 396 in a 95 S-10 and that thing was scary to drive so it was a lot of fun!
It is pretty bad in the rain, but not undriveable. I think it mostly needs new tires. Moderate breaking makes it slide a few feet and anything other than very light acceleration and it doesn't move. Will probably just put it in 4WD next time I need to drive in the rain, shouldn't be a problem for it to slip.

What the heck.. Why didn't i get a notification that you uploaded? I have all notification turned on.
And again over a year late; use a 6" extension on the socket so you can see when your deep enough with out whacking a finger.

Love your videos, but i have a question. Why does an engineblock have holes that need to be plugged? What is/was the purpose of those holes?
The purpose of those holes is to facilitate the removal of sand after the casting process, some people call them "freeze" plugs with the belief that if your coolant should ever freeze those plugs will save the day , I've seen blocks that didn't have antifreeze in the system and consequently froze , the cracks usually run horizontal about 2 inches above the lifters on the inside and horizontal about 1 to 2 inches below deck height on the outside of the block , the plugs might move a little but in no way save the block ,the best way to prevent block damage from freezing is to use antifreeze in the correct measure

Hopefully soon for the Datsun video since I'm finishing this engine rebuild series up. Then starting a mini-series on a new car. Then a Jeep video sometime after that, no idea when unfortunately.
What was your final budget when all said and done? Camshaft, rebuild kit, etc. Thanks
The engine rebuild total was right around $280 (not including $35 for the flex hone and a few other tools and stuff).

@@michealdumasii5432 Small Block Chevy parts are very cheap, and I didn't do any machine work on the engine (like it probably should have gotten) so the cost was pretty minimal. The camshaft set ($115) was the majority of the cost and it wasn't at all necessary. Rebuild kit was $80, oil pump/core plugs/water pump $75.
Why not new cam bearings with all that other work don't make much sense?
Fuzzy, say BRO I have a 1980 Big 10, C10 Silverado rebuilt 350 5.7 ,I'm having a oil leak I can't find. I've installed, oil filter with new oil adapter, new valve covers gaskets, New oil sending unit, oil pan& gaskets, remove the flywheel cover,flywheel is dry, truck is park no leaks,once I drive her she starts leaking. I'm confused. Please help .thanks

I don't get it.
The plugs block off passages that are necessary to cast the block, and drill the oil galleries. The plugs are a byproduct of the way engine blocks have to be made.
Did you not use any sealer on these plugs?
Thread sealer on the threaded plugs, no sealant on the core plugs. Many people swear by using sealant on them, but I have never needed to. If the sealing surface isn't smooth or it isn't a standard type of plug, some sort of sealer or retaining compound wouldn't be a bad idea.
Hey Tom I'm not an old timer but I'm also not a millenial. I started using sealer on the plugs a few years back. Not a big glob of sealer just a thin skim on the surface. I just never wanna risk that the surface has a deep gauge and it will start leaking coolant. Even my Haynes Manual for rebuilding the engine on a 1991 4runner says to use light sealer on the plugs. I get people telling me all the time that sealer is not necessary. The people at the engine machine shops tell me it is not required. Better be safe than sorry, I think. Then the Haynes manual confirmed it. However earlier on, on my engine rebuilding experience I didn't use sealer on the core plugs and I never had a problem at all. But once again, better safe than sorry so I've been using sealer for a few years.
I just did a rebuild on the same engine but mine has no compression in cylinder one
Double check your valve lash setting, make sure the valves are opening and closing properly, that would be my first guess. An immediate head gasket leak that severe is unlikely. A severe assembly error (like forgetting piston rings) is also unlikely. Probably a valvetrain issue

I called them "galleries" in one video, and more than one commenter corrected me and said the proper term is "galley", so I went with it since I had heard that term used before as well, and only later researched it and found that "galley" is actually the misnomer. But both are used commonly enough I think the idea gets across either way.

Where did you get you’re rebuild kit?
eBay, search for "1987-1989 SBC SB Chevy 350 Engine Rebuild Kit" for this particular one, or go to that seller and look at similar ones for different years. My single complaint is that the thermostat housing gasket was junk, and I'd distrust the water pump gaskets, everything else seemed great for the price!
What are all these plugs for?
Most of them block off ports used in the casting process or plug openings left from the drilling of passages.
What happens when you just install the hidden plug flush and not down
I think I did that
And no I have no oil pressure priming

How far do you think you installed it? Flush with the shoulder or just with the bearing cap surface?

It's so much work
If it is directly under the bearing cap it may be blocking the main passage from the pump to the filter, causing your lack of oil pressure. If it fit tightly there, the plug you have is too large since you need to install it in a narrower area further down. Check the install depth from the pressure sender hole as you mentioned you would in another reply, it is very important that this plug is installed correctly.
No nitrile gloves?
I have been trying to wear them more often, sort of a habit to train myself into.

Sorry, I wish I could! I can barely make these videos at all, that would just be too much to handle.
Recording a step by step engine rebuild video and explaining what you're doing and why you're doing it is extremely time consuming. HATED IT. There are things I wanted to say during the process that I forgot to say. During the video taping process I would also forget the names of the engine parts because I was too focused in doing the right steps and in speaking while thinking ahead of the process also. In reality I have to buy a video editing software to do a voice over. Did I find it to be worth all the hassle? Hell no. It took such a long time to finish the rebuild that I just don't think I'll do another video.

I called them galleys and some commenters corrected me, so I started calling them galleries and them other commenters corrected me haha. I now know that galley is the correct term, right back where I started!
Dorman parts suck
I would have wiped the plugs with a thin coat of silicone sealant
Silicone on freeze plugs is notorious for coming loose and clogging the radiator and heater core. The best sealant I've used is Permatex form-a-gasket no. 1. It's fast drying like weatherstrip adhesive but specifically made for freeze plugs and other similar components.
